Good afternoon, folks. Calm weather continues across the region and we have a few more days left before things turn active again. I’m watching the potential for heavy rain and a few strong storms by late in the week before the pattern begins to turn colder into Christmas week.
As recovery efforts continue from our deadly tornado outbreak, an earthquake rattled parts of the region shortly after noon today…

The extreme events of this weekend cannot be overstated.
Dry and milder weather continues around here over the next few days, but the second half of the week into the start of next weekend looks active. We have two systems set to impact our region from Thursday through Saturday. Both of these will bring showers and thunderstorms in here with the potential for a few strong storms. That said, this doesn’t look anything like what just happened here in Kentucky.
This may put down another 1″-3″ of rain across much of the region…
That will likely be followed up by another system a few days later as we kick off Christmas week. The models are split on what happens with this as some cut it right on us. Others, like the EURO, take it on a more eastern track allowing for colder air…
As colder air continues to become more involved in the pattern Christmas week, we need it to fully take control. If not, we will be looking at a very stormy and wet setup in our region with rainfall numbers like what the GFS is showing over the next 2 weeks…
Nothing good can come from the cold not taking control around here. For the professional weather folks cheerleading a mild pattern… Stop. It comes with a price that we simply want no part in paying, especially in light of what just happened around here. That’s me being as blunt as I can be about the nasty weather potential if the cold doesn’t take over later this month.
I may drop by for an evening update so check back. Have a great rest of your day and take care.
Where are you cold air!!
Schroeder I hope your are ok .
I hope so too. Maybe it’s a power outage
Cold air keeps looking a few weeks out and does not pan out much. Seems we are again more likely to see big ice than big snow this winter. The tornadoes though knocks that into perspective.
A big Kudos to Chris for his coverage of the awful tornado outbreak. I was 10 on April 3, 1974 when the last super outbreak occurred. I felt that same timid anxiety, and awesomeness of nature’s wrath as I did back then. Chris you handled it with the professionalism and calmness that the public needed, intermixed with the explanations and tools that allowed the public to understand what was going on at that moment. That said,
I’m a winter lover as well, as am still looking at the teleconnections future. The NAO looks to finally be trending negative and the MJO surfing into the zone 7/8 territory. But the PNA still appears to be stubbornly stuck in the negative zone. Hopefully everything will come togather before the year.
