Good Saturday, folks. Our Friday system turned into quite the system with periods of light snow giving way to those big time snow squalls causing all kinds of issues. Now comes the bitter cold to start the weekend as we start to focus on another harsh winter pattern settling in for February.
Many areas picked up on 1″-3″ of snow with locally higher amounts for some. This put Lexington into the history books once again…
Breaking: This is now the 7th snowiest January on record for Lexington and the 12th snowiest month ever recorded.
With today's 3.1" of snow, we are up to 17.1" of snow for the month. #kywx

We likely added to that after that tweet was sent, but WOW. And to think there was a TV station in Lexington that spent the entire month telling folks not to believe the snow forecasts coming from the “other” station.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Toby Keith…
Of course, I’m kidding with this… Kinda. 😎😁 Lighten up, people.
Temps out there today are brutally cold to start with single digits across the northern half of the state with wind chill numbers below zero. Afternoon temps are in the 20-25 degree with a mix of sun and clouds.
The setup for next week continues to look concerning as a big temp gradient sets up in our region for the middle of the week. We will likely see temps get to normal or a bit of above Tuesday and Wednesday with rain moving in.
Arctic air then slides in here on Thursday as a slow-moving boundary hangs around with waves of low pressure working along it. The models are hinting at rain to freezing rain and snow. The freezing rain signal is there with each run of the models…

This is still several days away, but it’s something we definitely need to keep watch on. Here’s hoping the cold fully takes control and gives us more of a rain to snow signature without any kind of icy transition.
One thing’s for sure, this kicks off another bitterly cold period and the operational models are showing some wicked numbers behind this system…
This pattern is loaded with cold and winter weather systems through much of February.
I will update things later today, so check back. Make it a good one and take care.
It will be interesting to see (if Feb turns out cold snowy) what our winter total will be..2014/15 was 40 inches (LEX) which was # 6 snowiest winter. It’s kind of blurry but I think that following winter was like right at 30 inches for the season, which didn’t make it to the top 10 snowiest winters…then after that for a few years the winters were kind of boring.
Thanks Chris, 0.6 inches of Snow this morning. We escaped the Snow Squalls yesterday as forecast for my area. I’m going to call it anyway that our total for Maple is 12 inches for the month of January.
I just have to say this is not what I call a Snowy Winter. I grew up with much deeper Snows.
The Ventusky weather site just up this mornings Snow total to 1.10 inches for Maple. At least I’m not Snowbound. LOL
I’ve had enough of this and the forecast for an ICE STORM is not helping my anxiety.
Lets skip Spring and go right into Summer !
A little over 4 inches here this morning. Most of that fell in a span of two hours.
Looks like the Dreaded Ice Band will be touring everybody’s town next week.
Chris, I’m going to hope for you to be wrong with any talk of freezing rain/ice coming in. I still have serious anxiety issues from the 2003 ice storm.
ME TOO Dottie, but my worse experience with an ICE STORM was in 2009. First Winter here in Kentucky. Fifteen days without heat or help from others.
Just looked at the latest run on GFS and it shows the Cold Front moving through without much in the way of crippling Ice accumulations. That’s GREAT news if it pans out.
I hope that GFS is right. I was without power for 26 days in the 2003 ice storm. I had damage to the masthead on my house so that had to be fixed before I was reconnected. It was quite an experience for a single person living alone. Thankfully my situation was different for the 2009 ice storm, but it still wasn’t fun. I’m ready for SPRING!
It’s funny brother I always tell people you are the wild man from Salyersville. Brother we will always love ya out this way when you get done with the big time show there in Lexington. When you have enough money saved up take over WYMT weather for walking around money. I know they could never pay you like the Lexs Metro area could. I don’t watch Caldwell he’s trader he left us for money.
Calling Jim Caldwell a traitor is utter foolishness.
Actually when he was with wymt he sang a different tune than he does now, I was shocked he went to wkyt based on past conversations.
The Lake Effect Snow Machine hit the immediate Chicago area pretty good on Friday morning, with O’Hare Airport picking up over 3 inches and Midway Airport around 7 inches. Even the SW suburbs, 40 miles from Lake Michigan, picked up around a half-inch of snow. That’s unusual for Lake Snow to go inland that far west.
All eyes here are on the late Tuesday through Thursday time frame, as a significant snowstorm is very much possible.
The Lake effects Snows always fascinated me. A few years back I received Snow Photos from a friend who lives on the east side of Lake Michigan. His home was almost buried with a very Heavy Lake Snow event.
Looks good on every model run for a substantial Snowstorm for your area later this coming week ?
The same storm will bring a lot of Rain to our area. Was worried we would have an Ice Storm, but now it looks less likely ?
I think my area has seen it’s last Snow for the Winter Season according to NOAA’s three month outlook.
I’m ready for Spring / Summer.
My simple thoughts: No Pink. NO Pink! NO PINK!
RIP WKY snow. Just wasn’t our season
