Good Tuesday to one and all. It’s a much milder day taking shape across the Commonwealth, but the focus continues to be on a big storm system rolling in here on Thursday. This brings the threat for strong storms and big time winds for our part of the world.
Temps today reach the 50s in most areas with a 60 in the west. Most areas surge into the 60s for Wednesday as strong southwest winds kick in ahead of a potent storm system that sweeps into the Ohio Valley Thursday.
The track of this low is still expected to be well to our west and northwest, putting Kentucky in the warm sector. Waves of showers and thunderstorms will sweep across the region and the potential for strong to severe storms will be with us.
The GFS has been solid as a rock with it’s track and we are seeing more and more of the models trending in that direction…
I’ve been at this for a while, but the wind gusts coming from the GFS have consistently been among the highest I’ve seen from a model for our region…
That’s absolutely absurd and indicates the potential for severe storms and pure gradient winds that crank.
While the GFS is has the highest gusts, the other models aren’t too far behind it.
Here’s the storm track from the NAM…
Here’s the wind gust forecast from this same run of the NAM…
The Short Range Canadian Model is also seeing the big wind potential…
Thursday is definitely a day to keep a weather eye out.
Once this system goes by, temps crash by more than 30 degrees behind it. That sets the stage for a seasonable brand of cold to start the weekend before things warm back up. That will be ahead of another potential big storm system next week.
If you’ve been reading, you know I’ve been beating the drum on a very active period for the second half of February into March. The latest control run of the EURO Ensembles continues to show just what I’m talking about. It has well above normal precipitation over the next few weeks…
The GFS Ensembles are getting on board with that…
I will have another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Enough with the excess rain already.
Thanks Chris, I Would rather be in the Areas that are going to Receive the Snowy Side of the coming Storm.

I am glad to be able to see the sun today.
I will take it when I can get it.
