Good afternoon, folks. It’s a gorgeous day across the Commonwealth and I suggest you take full advantage of it before things go downhill for the week ahead. It’s a week of wild weather with flooding rains, strong storms and winter weather. Buckle up for the ride.
Here’s a breakdown of how each day may play out:
Monday
Clouds thicken with late day showers and storms going up across western Kentucky where some strong or severe storms show up. Heavy rain and storms then overspread the state Monday night.
Tuesday
Flooding and flash flooding is a real possibility across the entire state as rounds of heavy rain roll through. A few strong or severe storms may also show up.
Wednesday
Much colder air pushes in as the first system moves to our east. Clouds hang tough as our next system presses in here by Wednesday night. Rain and a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain show up.
Thursday
Flooding is once again possible as our next system rolls through. This system has more cold air to work with so we will likely see freezing rain and a wintry mix for areas of the west into the northern half of the state. Freezing rain may become a bigger issue in some of these areas.
Friday
Morning wintry mix tapers off to light snow and flurries as cold air fully settle back in.
Next Weekend
The potential is there for a third system to bring snow and rain back into the region.
The heavy rain threat from the first system continues to edge a little farther north as we get closer. Here’s the GFS rainfall forecast through Tuesday night…
The Storm Prediction Center is indicating the chance for a few strong to severe storms across the region over the next few days. Here’s the Severe Weather Outlook for Monday…
That threat focuses a bit easy for Tuesday…
I’m making no change to the late week storm potential map…
The GFS Precipitation Type amounts match up pretty darn well with that map…
The EURO is just a bit north of the GFS…
The GFS total rainfall forecast through Friday continues to show some 6″+ rain amounts…
The GFS doesn’t have the weekend system as it drops a clipper in from the north and northwest. The EURO has been most aggressive with a third system…
Regular readers of KWC know how hard I’ve been banging the active pattern drum and it looks like Mother Nature is about to drop the hammer.
Enjoy the rest of the day and take care.
This upcoming week fits the pattern we have been in since beginning of the year.
