A Few Strong Storms Today

Good Saturday, everyone. It’s another steamy and stormy day taking shape across the state as our 4th of July weekend kicks into high gear. This same pattern looks to continue into the first full week of July as temps heat up even more. There’s a chance at 100 degrees next week as the ghost of 2012 lives on.

Showers and storms increase today as a cold front slides in from the northwest. Some of these storms may produce damaging winds and hail. The Storm Prediction Center has much of the region in a low-end risk for severe storms…

These storms will also put down a lot of rain in a short amount of time and that may lead to local high water issues. Steamy temps will be noted outside the storms with upper 80s and low 90s.

The front sags just to the south on Sunday with temps coming down a bit. We still run the risk for a few storms going up.

The 4th of July will feature about what you would expect for Independence Day weather. Highs in the upper 80s to low 90s with a storm or two going up.

From here, we watch the northwestern sky for clusters of strong storms dropping through the Ohio Valley through the rest of the week into the start of next weekend. Here’s how the EURO sees this pattern…

Rainfall during this time…

Given the fact these storms will be on the leading edge of a heat wave, we will need to watch to see if a derecho can fire up.

Speaking of the heat, temps in the 90s will be common with the possibility of 100 degree temps on any day that doesn’t feature clouds or storms. The best chance for this is in the west, obviously.

A few weeks ago, I threw out the summer of 2012 similarities and we are seeing that playing out now.

I could use a couple inches of rain over the next 7 days. I hope the models play out.

Late July of 2012 produced the nastiest heat I’ve seen in my almost 21 years as a Kentuckian. Saddle up, folks.

Thanks Chris for your Wonderful Weather Blog each Morning. Since I moved after retiring to Taylor County ( Maple ) on this very day July 2nd, 14 years ago, I can’t remember a 100 degree temperature ever here in Maple, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Like now it was very dry here in 2008, but the drought soon broke later that Summer. In my local forecast the NWS is only giving my area a 20% coverage of showers today. Maybe we will get lucky ?

In the Southwest Atlantic, off shore there is a Tropical Storm that formed overnight. Too early to tell what may happen with this Storm.
