Good Monday, everyone. We have a weak cold front dropping into the region over the next few days and this is bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region. The air behind this front feels pretty darn nice for the first few days of September with questions showing up for Labor Day Weekend.
Storms today and Tuesday aren’t terrible concentrated, but a few could be strong and put down heavy rains. As a matter of fact, the Storm Prediction Center has us in a low-end risk for a few severe storms today…
Damaging wind is the primary threat.
Storms continue until the front passes Tuesday night. Some local 1″-2″ rains will show up during this time, but the models disagree on where this happens…

Very nice air comes in for the final day of August on Wednesday and lasts through the first few days of September. Upper 70s to low 80s for highs and 50s for lows with pleasant humidity levels should put a smile on your face. 😁
The tropics are really starting to ramp up with multiple systems now being tracked by the National Hurricane Center…
What happens with the system trying to get in the Gulf and the development in the Atlantic may play a role in your Labor Day weekend forecast and into the following week.
The EURO continues to bring moisture from the Gulf into our region over the weekend as a tropical system approaches the southeast…
That’s a setup to keep a close eye on as it would bring heavy rain in here.
Other models aren’t as enthusiastic with the heavy rain around here, but the Canadian is in the ballpark and also has the system approaching the southeast…
Again, that’s something to keep a close eye on in the coming days.
I will have the latest on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm. As always, the blog is set for you to track today’s storms…
Possible Watch Areas
Have a marvelous Monday and take care.
Thanks Chris, The various weather models will agree one day and disagree the next but that’s the way it is. I’m hoping for at least an inch of precipitation in my area to alleviate the wildfire danger. Too late for the crops as the yield is already made. I’m hoping for an average yield compared to last year’s harvest where we had close to a record ?
In the Tropical Atlantic, we may have a named storm by early September ? Hopefully it will not make landfall in Southeast Florida or elsewhere along the East Coast. I read this Morning that High Pressure dominates the Gulf of Mexico. Here’s the latest discussion : https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATWDAT+shtml/290906_MIATWDAT.shtml?
The hurricane center has designated the Atlantic tropical depression as “91L, and given it a greater than 60% chance of further strengthening. At the moment, shearing looks to be minimal, and steering currents aloft and at the surface could push 91L towards the southeast coast, although a cold front currently over the midwest could possibly redirect it to the northeast, and out to sea.
The heat continues in South Central Kentucky… Current temperature at my PWS just south of Bowling Green is 85°F, with a forecasted high today of 90°F. Bowling Green averages 47 days per year where the temperature is equal to or greater than 90°F. This year to date, I have recorded 58 days on which the high temperature equaled or exceeded 90°F, including 5 days where the temperature equalled or exceeded 100°F.
The mini-drought in the BG area also continues; for the month of August, I have recorded a total of 1.73″ of rain, ith the most recent rainfall (0.26″) occurring 7 days ago.
Joe, I just ran the seven day forecast on the Ventusky and it showed 91L depression becoming a Tropical Storm or Hurricane just off the Southeast Coast by the fifth of September ? The cold front could work three ways, it could slow down, or stall out in the Midwest due to tropical activity in the Atlantic, or hopefully, it will move quickly and push the Storm out to Sea ?
This month of August, here in Maple has been rather mild compared to others in past years. The highest temperature was 91 degrees and the Kentucky Mesonet at WKU recorded 3.11 inches of precipitation so far. Hope you receive a good soaking rain soon.
