Good evening, folks. Showers and a few thunderstorms continue to push across the southern half of the state as a stout cold front sweeps in from the northwest. This is ushering in a winter looking system that can has the chance to bring a few flakes into parts of the region.
Let’s start off with what’s happening out there this evening. As expected, much of today’s rain has been south of Interstate 64. Some local downpours and rumbles of thunder are being noted and there’s even the chance for a strong storm in the far southeast…
Here are your radars to follow along…
Now, let’s talk about the chance to see some flakes early in the new week.
A strong northwest flow kicks in late Monday through Tuesday. That flow will pick up moisture from Lake Michigan and cause widespread rain and snow showers to develop downstream into Indiana and Ohio. Can that flow make it all the way into the bluegrass state? I think that’s a possibility.
The best chance to see some snowflakes is across central and eastern Kentucky late Monday night into Tuesday morning. This is by no means a slam dunk, but the chance to see rare mid-October flakes is certainly there.
The future radar from the HRRR shows this potential…
So is the future radar from the Hi Res NAM…
Other models are getting on bard with the flake potential…
In terms of the cold… nothing has changed. This is one of the all time coldest air masses to ever move into Kentucky for this time of year. Record lows are possible Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and record cold high temps are even possible for some.
I sometimes point out our local weather community for their seemingly lack of interest when it comes to anything concerning cold or winter weather and going out of their way to downplay anything not heat or drought.
Not a single mention of historical perspective in this tweet…
Ongoing scattered showers will continue into the early evening, but drier and partly cloudy skies are expected tonight. Mostly sunny, breezy, & dry weather for tomorrow. Much colder air arrives Mon night, with freezing temperatures likely both Mon night and Tue night. #kywx #inwx pic.twitter.com/VeKNmIE8E9
