Good Friday to one and all. Heavy rain is blasting across central and eastern Kentucky today as the remnants from Nicole impact the region. Behind this comes a quick transition to wintertime as we may put some snow on the ground for a time Saturday.

Before we get to the weather, a big thank you to all our veterans out there!

Let’s start with today’s weather and roll forward.

Bands of heavy rain are spinning across central and eastern Kentucky and there’s the chance for a little thunder to show up. These bands of rain are bringing beneficial rainfall to the region with a general 1″-2″ of rain with local 3″ amounts a possibility. There’s going to be that sharp cutoff on the western side of the rain shield, so keep that in mind.

Here are your busy radars to follow along…

The steady rains taper off from west to east this afternoon and evening with some lingering misty showers a possibility.

That blast of wintertime arrives later tonight in the form of a cold front working in from the west. This front will also have a quick-moving wave of low pressure developing along the front. That leads to rain and snow developing from southwest to northeast late tonight and early Saturday.

This is a quick-hitting rain and light snow maker, but there’s enough moisture to put down some light snow accumulations for some, and this would mainly happen on grassy and elevated surfaces.

Here’s the area I continue to watch for the best chance of seeing some slushy accumulation…

Now, there’s the chance for a stripe of more than 1″ to show up. I will probably have to do a First Call for Snowfall with a middle of the day update.

The future radar from the HRRR shows a nice band of wet snow zipping through here by early Saturday afternoon with some snow showers and flurries coming in behind it for Saturday night…

This is backed up very well by the GFS…

The EURO…

The Canadian…

After a cold break later Sunday and Monday, the next storm system threatens to bring rain and snow into the region on Tuesday. The models all have this system, but treat the track and intensity a little differently…

Updates coming your way later today, so check back.

Enjoy the rain and make it a great Friday. Take care.
