Good Thursday, everyone. Rounds of snow showers and a few squalls are working across the state today, putting down light accumulations for some. This is ahead of the final weekend of January that looks half and half. The setup next week likely finds the fence likely setting up once again in our region.
Let’s kick things off with today’s winter weather. These snow showers and squalls will put down light accumulations, but this isn’t a one snowfall fits all. Many areas will pick up coatings from time to time with some pockets of an inch or two possible in the heavier action.
I know many of you are wanting those snow days and I think we do get some, but not everyone will be seeing that kind of action today or into early Friday.
Here’s what you need to track today’s flakes…
Go to our weathercams page to check out the views from across the state…
Some slick spots on area roads will be possible for a time in the heavier snow showers, but road temps are well above freezing. The best chance for slick spots will come tonight and Friday morning with temps in the 20s.
Another weak front moves in by Friday evening and may have a shower in the north. Winds will once again be very gusty and may reach 40-45mph…
Saturday looks great with milder temps and some sun. Sunday looks ugly with rain and 40s. That system ends as a few flakes early Monday as we watch the storm track for next week focus a bit farther south. Here comes the fence once again…

Y’all know I love winter weather, but I’m to the point of the year when I can easily be persuaded to join #TeamSpring. Go big or go home winter!
I’ll have updates later today, so check back. Make it a good one and take care.
A frustrating winter.
The good news is that it will be over soon.
No it won’t.
Winter weather may not be over, but Old Man Winter’s back is certainly broken.
I’m not a fan of wet snows where you have a decent snow, but the next day temps are well above freezing… it’s like what’s the point? I couldn’t believe all the areas that got snow and stayed above freezing. I know that can happen though
So far this winter has been a bust. I just had a gut feeling when we had that cold outbreak/snow @ Christmas. Seems like if this type of event occurs before January we usually have a anemic winter. Well let’s see what El Nino effect will have next winter .
Oh it’s the anniversary of the Blizzard of 78! What a event I was 15 years old .
I was 26 years old in 1978. That Blizzard was a once in a lifetime event I’m sorry to say. It occurred in a rare El Nino Winter.
sure is Ricvice, i was 18 senior in high school never will forget it.
Not a promise from NOAA that El Nino will influence our Winter 2023-24. We may have the same Winter weather pattern as this year. A fourth year La Nina ?
A strong Southeast Ridge has destroyed our chances of a major Snow event. We are however getting the Snow showers this morning. At least that is something resembling Winter.
The Chicago area received a widespread 3-to-4 inch snow on Wednesday morning into the afternoon, making this our largest snowfall of the season. Temperatures rose to 35-36 degrees during the day though, so there was efficient compacting and melting of the snow down to around two inches.
While Kentucky is going to be on the fence for the next week regarding precipitation, the Chicago area may get hit by two significant winter storms Saturday and Tuesday. Plus, the cold weather will really take hold here next week with much below normal temps.
Mike, You have the best chance of Winter Snows returning than Kentucky. I just hope Ice Storms are not in our future. Enjoy the Snows.
I am always on #TeamSpring. Even when its Summer, Im on #TeamSpring
Every La Nina Winter we have for now on, I will be on # TEAMSPRING at the get go !
