Good afternoon, everyone. Snow showers and sqaulls continue to push across the region, putting down quick-hitting light accumulations. This action slows down tonight as we start to focus on another fence-riding pattern taking shape for next week.
Here’s a sample of what these snow showers and squalls are doing to parts of the state…

These will continue through the afternoon and into the evening with additional hit and run accumulations. With some rays of sun coming out this afternoon,
The setup for next week continues to feature a series of southern systems rolling on the edge of frigid air expanding into the region.
The last two runs of the GFS look like this…
That could bring a lot of different winter weather into the region.
I will have updates later today, so check back. I leave you with your snow shower and snow squall tracking tools…
Go to our weathercams page to check out the views from across the state…
Make it a good one and take care.
Don’t see much snow, but do see the stuff the models are usually more accurate with. Bleh.
Next week could be really lame.
La Nina Winters are lame as a whole in the Ohio Valley. Why would next week be any different ?
Ice would be the difference from a normal KY cold winter rain.
Very true.
I have seen a few snow flurries but that’s about it. It is the strangest thing you can have nothing here In Pikeville or almost nothing and go up the road 30 minutes or so at the Va Ky boarder and it will be covered like a different world but I have noticed as you head back to Pikeville it’s gradually going down hill and I guess down In Elevation. It’s an amazing difference.
The snow squalls in the region are near example of lake effect snow.
( snow banding)
From what I gather there will be three waves come at us next week the 2nd system has the best chance to produce snowfall.
It will have more cold air to work with.
Although it is not a slam dunk.
I am “Team Sleet”if I have to compromise.
Crystal, Pikeville has an elevation of 2774 feet and right now has a temperature 28 degrees. I would think that area would be the best place in the state of Kentucky to receive up slope Snows.
Really because when I look Pikeville up it says about 1000 feet?? Oh there are higher places up on mountain tops but I am sure you know probably better than me. It’s just the strangest thing to go up to the Va state line about 30 minutes or so from me it’s another world as far as snow. I have watched on radar many times I have watched the snow and it would go right of it left of it and I thought is the mountains causing that or what That is why I use to joke and call it The Dome lol but yes we did have some good snow flurries today.
Crystal, I got that 2774 feet elevation figure from the Kentucky Mesonet. I think that is a location in Pikeville county where they take temperature readings. I don’t know for sure though. My elevation is 1060 feet here in Taylor county. We received a good coating of snow this morning. I was surprised.
We had a dusting of Snow early this morning. That brings our total Snowfall for Maple up to an inch. May be normal for our area. Don’t really know. # teamspring
