Good Thursday, folks. We continue to track a major wind maker rolling across the region today. Once this blows through, we turn our attention to a storm system for the weekend that can deliver a glancing blow of snow to southeastern Kentucky by Sunday.
Winds today may peak near 50mph at times as low pressure winds up to our west and north. Gusty showers and a rumble of thunder will be with us this morning before exiting eastern Kentucky by early this afternoon.
Here are your regional radars to follow the showers and storms…
Temps ahead of this front are deep into the 60s. Temps behind the front drop into the 40s.
Friday into Saturday continue to look like nice for the entire region as our storm system takes the southern route. This storm then turns the corner toward the southern Appalachians and into the Carolinas, strengthening along the way. This will likely have snow on the northwest side of the track of the low, and it could be a dynamic snowstorm for whoever winds up in that zone.
The EURO continues to drift farther northwest and slams much of eastern Kentucky on Sunday…
The GFS isn’t as far northwest into Kentucky, but it did move northwest compared to earlier runs of the model…
This is one to watch as upper lows are tricky and can put down a ton of snow on that northwest side.
Temps rebound early next week before another system moves in with colder weather later next week.
That may very well be the beginning of another winter look shaping up for the second half of February. The Euro Ensembles show that trough moving through with an even deeper trough diving into the country a few days later…
This is right on cue at the time the EURO Weeklies show a cold pattern taking control of the country deep into March. Check out the temperature departures from normal…
The control run for the same time is even colder…
That’s really not a surprising look at this point. Most of our springs have been late starters over the past decade or so. I was hoping this year would buck the trend, but Old Man Winter doesn’t look like he will let that happen.
I’ll throw you another update or two later today. Have a good one and take care.
Old Man Winter has made it a norm to show up late to his annual party.
He is a real party p@@per.
Could be something to track ? Dynamic cooling resulting in those heavy Snowstorms are the most interesting, but are very rare for my area of Kentucky. I experience one in early March 1960 where South Central Indiana received up to two feet of great packing Snow.
My fibromyalgia has just been terrible with all the pressure changes this winter. My achy knee says 5-more weeks of winter!
I have the same problem with weather and pressure changes. Pain in my lower back and legs with every weather change. But I’m not young anymore.
Eastern Ky wins again
The further East one goes in Kentucky the climate changes dramatically.
It’s 72 here now the reading on my phone. Schroeder you are right farther east in Ky you go at times seems like a different state or something with the climate. Joe glad you are doing good after surgery and Dash I hear you about achy knee that’s funny how you put that 5 more weeks of winter says your achy knee lol
March-like winds continue to howl across Warren County, and my PWS recorded a wind gust of 47mph. Could it be La Niña’s way of saying bye-bye?
Speaking of La Niña, the CPC just released the latest ENSO report:
SUMMARY
ENSO-neutral conditions are expected to begin within the next couple of months, and persist through the Northern Hemisphere spring and early summer.
Hope your recovering from your surgery Okay Joe. Glad to read your postings on KWC this morning. Maybe some good news that La Nina is slowly phasing towards ENSO / neutral and finally an ENSO / El Nino next Fall and Winter ?
Thanks Schroeder, the surgery was successful, and I’m feeling surprisingly good. Because my rotator cuff was completely shot, they had to perform what is called a reverse total shoulder replacement. There are YouTube videos on this, which I do NOT recommend watching!!
Now I begin an anticipated several months of surgery.
That’s GREAT Joe. Glad to read your recovering nicely !
Hoping the 12z Euro holds, Nam made big moves towards Euro.
Only received 0.03 inches of rain here in Maple. It’s almost mid- February, and so far we only recorded 0.05 inches. Last month we received a little over 6.00 inches of precipitation. Hope this is not going to trend towards another abnormally dry spell. Winds, however are horrible this morning.
and euro moves to gfs…
Gee Nam has gone South with the birds..No Nam snow..
That’s funny I have to laugh to keep from crying over snow ⛄️
La Nina may phase to ENSO- neutral very soon ( February to April ) time frame, and remain neutral till Fall, and then will phase back to ENSO- La Nina for Winter. It did this last year. Nothing will change until we go from ENSO- La Nina to ENSO- El Nino.
I don’t like La-Nina lol
