Good Wednesday to one and all. Warm winds are cranking across the region today as our temps surge toward record highs. This comes as our spring pattern rolls on here in February, but there are signs of this changing as we head into… Spring.
Temps today are in the 70s for most areas and we are likely to challenge record highs for the day. Winds are gusting from the southwest and may reach 40mph-50mph at times.
The threat is also there for a shower or storm early today as the warm front lifts northward through the day. The threat is also there for a broken line of showers and storms to move in from west to east this evening into the overnight. I can’t rule out a strong storm with this, especially in the west. The Storm Prediction Center even has a low-end risk for severe storms…
Here are your radars to track whatever is out there…
Thursday is another very windy and warm day with 70s across the board.
Chillier air moves in for Friday into the start of the weekend as a couple of showers try to brush the southern half of the state…
There’s an interesting system coming into early next week and it’s one that can produce another big blast of wind with the threat for strong and severe storms late Monday…
Looking down the road into early March, colder changes are trying to show up and this makes perfect sense given what we’ve been seeing in the past decade plus. Our springs have been trending colder with and getting off to a later than normal start.
The EURO Ensembles show massive blocking signals on a number of fronts. Watch how the Arctic Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation and Eastern Pacific Oscillation all go negative at the same time…
Watch how that trio forces the trough to take control of the country in early March…
To take this a step further, the EURO Weeklies go through early April and are locking in on much colder than normal weather across the country…
The Control Run of the Weeklies are even colder…
You guys know this will verfiy, right? You also know we will likely see some March snows with this, right? Why? Cause Mother Nature hates us. 😜😜
I will update things later today. Make it a wonderful Wednesday and take care.
Winter is very much alive and well in the Upper Midwest, as most of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan are under Winter Storm Warnings, Blizzard Warnings, and even Ice Storm Warnings through Thursday. The Twin Cities are expecting an historic snowstorm total of 15-21 inches, which would make it one of the top ten biggest snows ever there, and more than the Chicago area has received this entire Winter so far.
Here in the Chicago Metro Area, it’s just going to be a cold, heavy rain through tonight. Over an inch of rain is predicted, with gusty NE winds and highs in the upper 30s. Across far Northern IL near the Wisconsin border, an Ice Storm Warning is in effect.
The major pattern change toward colder weather that’s predicted for early March will certainly be interesting to follow.
Very rare to have Ice Storm Warnings that far North. Hope the Folks up there won’t have to deal with that most dangerous Winter weather event.
The AO, NAO and EPO all going negative in March into April are bad news for Team Spring. But if we’ve learned anything from our weather over the past few years, it’s that these signals are not written in stone. La Niña’s departure may also have a hand in affecting these signals…
Hopefully!
NOAA is loosing confidence on an El Nino forming for next Fall and Winter. The PDO at this time shows no sign of going positive. The PDO was negative in 2015 and resulted in Kentucky having a major Snowstorm in February. In my opinion, phases of the PDO and AMO is a useful meteorological tool for predicting long range weather forecasting.
Going POSITIVE in 2015 is what I meant. D*a*m*n stroke.
Very windy and almost hot is predicted for tomorrow and Friday. Again the Southeast Ridge wins. Not much rain either. I hope the cold wins in March and April to delay what we have left of the growing season. This coming Summer could be a long lasting scorcher with an active Hurricane season.
If the south ridge high a.k.a Bermuda High remains strong and stationary it is going to make it difficult for a hurricane to make an eastern sea board landing.
The gulf on the other hand looks prime. Imo.
Last year the Bermuda High was situated in the Gulf and spared the Gulf Coast states any major Hurricanes. Hurricanes always follow the rim of the Bermuda High.
In 93 we got a blizzard the week before spring. Never know.
In 1993 we were in a ENSO / neutral phase. That blizzard was a rare event. The AMO would have to be in the negative phase for that to occur.
We are over do for a good ole smack down snow storm for March. Who knows what mother nature has got up its sleeve for March.
Winter Lover, did you know that if your area of Western Kentucky receives a Major Snowstorm that my area wouldn’t receive any Snow because we are in the path of the moisture bearing low pressure systems. We might receive the backside flurries before the storm departs. I consider this area of South Central Kentucky Snow free most Winters, but it is still listed as receiving thirteen inches of Snow on the average. They need to mark that down to four inches.
It’s hard to recall Schroedor if that’s happen. Weird weather does happen.
Don’t know if this is accurate but I am getting a temperature reading of 81 currently but it is warm out. Nice day.
74 degrees here in Maple with a dew point of 56 degrees. Very overcast and the wind gust is terrible. I think the rain will stay away for now.
There is a Tornado Watch out for the Southern half of IL and Eastern and SE Missouri until 6 PM. Two counties in far Western Kentucky are also included. Tornado Warnings were issued earlier in the afternoon north of St. Louis.
Most, if not all of KY will miss out on the severe weather today though. I’m sure you guys are enjoying the unseasonable warmth with temps well in the 70s over most of the state.
Here in the Chicago Metro area, it’s 34 degrees with a cold, heavy rain falling along with a minor flooding risk. A major ice storm is occurring in far Northern IL and far Southern Wisconsin.
Nothing is more miserable than cold rain Mike. If it wasn’t so windy, it would be a nice Spring day here in Kentucky. Your area should receive some Snow later. Minneapolis is expecting maybe two feet of Snow if not a blizzard.
