Good Thursday to one and all. It’s a windy and warm day out there as we get set for a lot of rain and storms over the next few days. This setup will bring the threat for strong to severe storms and flooding rains into parts of the region.
Let’s begin with the good news that is the weather out there today. Highs are mainly in the 70s with a mix of sun and clouds. Winds are cranking and may reach 40mph or a little greater at times. There’s also the slight chance for a shower or storm to go up, especially in the north.
Here you your radars to play along…
Here’s a breakdown of how things play out from here:
- A cold front drops toward northern Kentucky overnight, bringing a few showers and storms with it.
- A few waves of strong storms may be noted tonight across the west and north.
- This front slows down across the region on Friday. That allows for waves of showers and storms to roll along it.
- Some of those storms may be strong or severe.
- A HUGE temp gradient is likely to show up from north to south Friday afternoon. The far south may flirt with 80 while the far north struggles to get out of the 40s.
- Low pressure then rolls into the Ohio Valley from the southwest Friday night and Saturday morning.
- That brings additional rounds of showers and storms with it. Once again, some of these storms may be strong or severe.
- All these rounds of heavy rain may cause flooding issues to develop. The greatest risk continues to be across the west and north, and into areas of north-central Kentucky.
- The weather overall is nowhere near as wet in the south and southeast.
I’m still rolling with the same area for the Greatest Risk for water issues…
That matches up fairly well with a FLOOD WATCH that begins tonight and runs through Saturday…
The Storm Prediction Center has a low-end risk for severe storms this evening in the west…
In terms of the severe threat for Friday, here’s the area the Storm Prediction Center is focusing on…
Again that should move farther east for Friday night, but this may not be reflected in the Saturday Severe Weather Outlook from the SPC…
Here’s a look at the overall picture via the GFS…
I will have another update later today so check back. Make it a good one and take care.

Thanks Chris. Would rather be in the cold rain than in the dangerous warm sector, but that’s the way it is in my area of the state.
Once again, South Central Kentucky prepares for another in our weekly series of week ending severe storm systems. It figures, when you consider the strong temperature gradient and ample flow of moisture. It will not surprise me at all to see this year’s severe weather season end up being more active then normal, especially since in terms of our weather going forward, “normal” has been replaced by “chaotic”.
I will try to enjoy as many days as possible before the humidity returns to the Ohio Valley.
The weather is nice today but dread the heavy rain coming. Is it me or are the allergies worse this year??? They are for me anyway.
Yes, me too. My allergies have kick in on top of a recovering cold I’ve had for over a week now. Everytime the winds blow from the southwest it brings all that unwanted pollen into my area. I don’t know if the rain will reach my county or not ? My area could use some rain. Sun is out this afternoon and it’s easily in the 70’s.
Hey, the Euro model has been much more on the money for at least a year. T2024!
