Good Sunday to one and all. The mega snowstorm across the mid atlantic and northeastern states is another one of those “wow” weather moments that 2011 has produced. From the blizzards of last winter, the record setting tornado outbreaks, the southern plains heat, Texas drought, Hurricane Irene to the current storm… this may be the most extreme weather year on record for the United States.

It’s one of those times you sit back and watch in amazement at just how crazy the weather has become. To be honest, I don’t see this stopping anytime soon and the winter ahead is likely to produce more extreme events. Several of my analog years suggest one of those events would impact us. We shall see.

Our weather is looking rather tame compared to what many are getting today. We have mainly sunny skies with highs into the 50s. This comes after a cold start in the 20s for many…

Morning Lows


Current Temps



This takes us into Halloween and a weak system diving in from the northwest. This should be able to touch off some scattered showers and that’s something trick or treaters may have to deal with. High temps will be tricky with upper 40s and low 50s for those with some showers and 50s outside of the action.

This then works to our east by Tuesday and will try to fire up another east coast low. This should be a warmer system, but it is another fall trend that should be noted.

Highs will warm back into the 50s Tuesday with some 60s in the west. Those 60s will work in for Wednesday and Thursday as another system works slowly eastward. The forecast models are having a tough time with this energy and are trying to figure it all out. The European Model shows a nice little cutoff low bowling eastward across the Ohio Valley later Thursday and Friday…



That is something to watch for and is something i’m not totally sold on right now. If that is the case… a nice little rain event is possible by the end of the week with more chilly temps.

There should be another system trying to work in next weekend and that one may have a nice push of cold air behind it. As a matter of fact, keep an eye on the plains states late this week into next weekend for the possibility of another big winter event.

This pattern remains very active for the next few weeks and the GFS rain forecast shows a ton of action…



Don’t concentrate on exact rain totals for a given area… just look at that map and understand it is screaming ACTIVE.
