Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Good Wednesday, everyone. Today is always a big day here on KWC as we go full on for Planes, Trains and Automobiles. This holiday classic is set around the Thanksgiving season and we’ve used this busy travel day to have a little PT and A fun when breaking down the weather.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is one of my fave movies of all time and, if you haven’t watched it, it’s definitely a full blown two thumbs up from your friendly weatherdude.

This week, I learned something new about the movie. This movie had a title song that’s never been released, and it was written, and allegedly, recorded by none other than Elton John. Wait… What?!!? According to this 1987 article from the LA Times, contractual issues got in the way of the songs release. If it’s out there, here’s hoping it sees the light of day!

Ok, let’s talk a little weather. Low clouds, mist and a few light showers will be noted across areas of central and eastern Kentucky today. There’s the chance for a few breaks in the clouds in the west and north before the day is through, but a lot of us will struggle with temps in the 40-45 degree range.

Most of the showers will be too light to show up on radars, but they’re on duty nonetheless…

Will clouds linger for parts of our region into Thanksgiving? That’s the question I’m trying to answer right now. Many of the highest resolution models are showing clouds doing just that across central and eastern Kentucky and that’s evident with their respective temp forecasts…

Other models like the GFS say “what clouds?” and have temps reaching 50 or better area wide…

This makes me want to go full-blown Neal Page…

Black Friday shoppers look to be in pretty good shape with a mix of sun and clouds and temps ranging from the middle 40s north to low 50s south and west.

Colder temps continue to seep in from the north on Saturday, setting the stage for a system to roll in here with some light precipitation Sunday and Sunday night. Light rain, light snow and a bit of a mix will be possible with this system as really cold air crashes in from the northwest. A second system may then show up in some form a few days later.

Here’s the Canadian…

The GFS…

This is some really cold air coming in as temps go well below normal for an extended period to close out November. Check out just how far below normal from this Sunday through next Thursday…

Or maybe that’s from looking at the EURO Weeklies for later in December. This model now updates once a day and it’s locking into a deep trough developing across the eastern half of the country for the second half of December and into the start of January.

Watch the weekly progression of this trough setting up. Here’s week 3 of December…

Now watch how that trough really gets cranking the following week, which is Christmas week…

And now the trough really flexes as we flip the calendar…

The EURO Weeklies usually have a tough time finding troughs and colder than normal temps, so this is interesting to see.

I will have another update coming later today. Until then, let’s enjoy this classic scene from Planes, Trains and Automobiles…

Have great and safe Wednesday. Take care!

Thanks Chris. A very fun movie to start the Holidays. LOL to all the acting throughout the Movie with a very moving end to the movie.

Glad to see and maybe an end to the long dry spell. Weather may be returning to normal as I once remembered. Still waiting to see if El Nino will affect Kentucky’s Winter in the way of training Snowstorms.

Happy Thanksgiving to All !!! And Remember to be Grateful for what you Have.

GOD Bless Everyone and be Safe.

First time I saw in was in the early 90s. I remember renting it on VHS and I don’t think it was anywhere close to Thanksgiving… I LOVED it.. Seen in many times. My dad was in one of the grocery stores in Brevard NC buying groceries and who does he run into??? Steven Martin. LMAO… I said WHAT???? Why was he at Ingles (the name of the supermarket) he said he has a bluegra-s-s band or something in that area and owns a house or something. This was maybe 5 years ago.

FYI, Steve Martin is perhaps a better banjo player than a comedian, and that’s saying a lot 🙂 Just search “Steve Martin Banjo” on YouTube and see his many banjo performances.
