Good afternoon everyone and welcome to a wintry day. We’re getting in on widespread snow showers and squalls and these will continue to kick it up a notch into this evening. Gusty winds and arctic air provide round out the winter blast.
We have already received reports of the heavier snow squalls dropping close to an inch of snow in a very short period of time. Other areas have only seen a coating here or there. Welcome to the world of snow showers and squalls. With the action becoming more widespread… more and more real estate will get in on some of the heavier action… especially in the central and east. Roads will become snow covered at times in these heavier snow squalls and that trend will increase as the sun sets.
I have no changes to my thoughts from the past few days. As I’ve mentioned… some areas may come in with the over while others come in under the forecast. As long as you understand that’s to be expected in this setup… we will all get along just fine.
Watch for a plume of moisture from Lake Michigan to get involved later this evening into early Tuesday. That may aim right at parts of northern eastern Kentucky and can really give the squalls a boost.
Temps today will generally hang in the upper 20s before falling into the teens tonight. Tuesday will see low and mid 20s central and east with low 30s west.
I am still watching late Wednesday into early Thursday for some possible light snow sneaking in from the northwest as a system dives into the Ohio Valley. I realize the GFS doesn’t show this so you won’t hear it being discussed as a possibility anywhere else.
Friday will see temps rebound ahead of another trough digging in over the coming weekend. This one may have a storm associated with it that comes from the south and rides up the east coast. That’s something to watch as there are now STRONG signs of a prolonged wintry pattern taking us through January. Time will tell on how that works out.
Let’s track some snow and cold…
Current Temps
More updates as needed and I will continue to blow up your twitter feed. Take care.

Thanks for the update, Chris! Snow is off and on here in Mount Vernon, and I can see what you mean regarding the heavier bursts: Snow falls heavy for about 15 minutes and then stops. Some of the roads are snow-coated here.
White out behind Wal Mart IN Pikeville!!!
talk about pouring salt on the wounds!..lol..watching all these pics, and hearing about all these heavy snow squalls, and all my back yard has been able to get is flurries, and an occasional snow shower, but the sun has been the primary weather here today..:(
maybe I’ll get some later…I hope!
watching radar looks like a training effect is happening over laurel, clay, moving into the hazard area..so ROLO and SHAWNA over in clay co…should be getting some nice squalls…share please…lol
So hoping for snow in berea bring it on…….
26 degrees witha windchill of 13 here in ELizabethtown. SNow flurries and light showers on and off. Sun shining through right now (which I read can cause more instability and maybe more showers?) but hubby says its snowing in Ft Knox & Radcliff and I see it on radar possibly coming toward us if it doesnt fade away, lol. We are too close to Louisville and it’s snow dome.
BTIM were s333t out of luck baily saying naow more NRTHERNLY AND WEST.LOL
were just to far west, just couty over from u and i will see 1-2 inches tonite after dark.
Still nothing in london/Corbin. Haven’t seen the first snowflake. The way it is moving I don’t expect we will get anything out of this !!!
nope nothing here ole buddy we are one couty to far west right now will see some by nitfall i say. had a hravy 15 minute shower never laid a bit still top warm, not even on roof tops.
Just talked to the NWS charleston…….ugh frustrating!! do they know how to read a freaking radar…….Southeast ohio has picked up 2.5″ probably 3″ since I last checked and they say…..well we don’t feel there is a reason to issue and advisory!! I don’t get them……and yes it’s still snowing pretty hard at the moment….has been for an hour and a half now!!
WHITE OUT IN ETOWN!!!!
Here in Shelbyville it will snow hard for about 10 minutes then the wind will blow it all around and the sun will come out and melt the rest. We had a dusting on the ground after a heavy shower just after 1 but now it’s all gone.
Strong, I hope so!
Based on the wrecks alone, Winter WX Advisories should be out for a lot of the region. Salt trucks should be out treating roads if they are not already.
30 degrees and off/on snow showers…had a nice snow blast around 11:30…parts of ground and roof tops covered….peeks of sun now…strong gusty winds as well….
Good blast of snow for 10 minutes, everything is dusted real good, lookin pretty!
Nice snow squalls been coming down for a while now. School let out at 1:30!!!
Snowing pretty good in Whitley Co. 🙂
Boyle County: 28* cloudy….We have had a good snow shower or two. A brief spotty dusting but melted away quickly.

Another good snow burst came through Rockcastle about 15 mins ago. Here is a short 15 Second clip.
This weather is awesome!! The quick bursts are beautiful to watch. And it’s just like Chris said, similar to a pop up thunderstorm–except really only better, because pop up thunderstorms
usually only come once!! LOL
Nice snow shower in Lou. area. Wish it would snow like that from now until the morning. This is just teasing us with a quick burst here and there. We need an Apps runner…..THINK SNOW!!!
On and off showers here in Burnside. Nothing sticking so far…..
Now that’s what I’m talkin’ about…snow here in Harlan County…purty as can be…
got 0.75 of inch sun come out its all gone, nbe theit snow almost a inch in 10 minutes. way it be till dark, so that when u see any on ground that be enough to get school out. sunshining bright 5 min after snow almost a inch. crazy
kinds s
We got another quick 5-10 minute burst to give us a dusting. Hopefully this time it won’t melt before the next burst.
It’s been flurring in London and Lily since about eight o’clock this morning. I don’t know about Corbin I’ve not been in Corbin.
We had a nice little snowfall for a bit. It’s on and off right now! Let it snow, let it snow!!
Holy cow, a wall of snow came through in Paintsville and dropped an inch of fluffy snow in a matter of minutes….I’m pumped and hoping for more accumulation tonight!!!
Friday 13th will be our 1st Major winter storm.Ohio valley remember this date.Im talking Old School.Chris won’t mention LR anymore because too many people cry when it don’t happen.Well im telling you the models are showing the possibility something big around that time. Not set in stone 10 days out but the POSSIBILITY is there.
heavy snow squall in bimble area of knox co.!! almost white out conditions and nearing 1/2″ of snow in just about 15 or 20 minutes…wow…been waiting all day for one of these…looks like the wait paid off, because its getting dark now, and it will hang around til at least tomorrow morning…:)
Bahahaha that would be awesome!
Here in Woodford County the flurries come and go. The last 10-15 minutes had a nice little squall come through. Hope it sticks for a bit.
A couple of intense snow squalls reducing visibilities to less than a 1/4 mile at times has accumulated almost 0.5″ here in Valley Station near Louisville.
Roads are covered here in my neck of the woods as another heavy band has moved through, i wiould say well over an inch all together today and at least an inch on the ground and still s snowing.
Just picked up a little coating here in Owensboro from a little snow burst that lasted about 10 minutes or so. It has again stopped though. When it comes, it fun though.
As CB already mentioned, these are squalls, so just like when we get storms and one place will get hammered, while a few miles away might not.
Case in point, Winchester had a near white out, but ten miles away in north Madison, barely a flake, but the opposite several hours ago.
CB appears to have nailed this one- a full day ahead of other mets.
Fatal vehicle accident in Perry Co. Others with severe injuries.. Police saying some roads are so icy you can barely walk on them.. Hope the mild weather returns soon!
with about 1/2″ snow on the ground here at my house, another band is about to hit my yard…:) I wonder how much it will dump..
Well hats off to the city of Richmond. All the road here are pure snow and ice including the bypass. Seriously, havent seen one salt truck all day long. Good luck getting home everyone!
Approaching 2 inches in Southern Pike County at Dorton. Two squalls, two inches, not bad.
Numerous accidents being reported on 25E between Barbourville and Corbin. Hopefully the road crews get out and clear them. Heavy snow occcured during peak traffic time in this area, so people had no choice but to be on them heading home from work.
Nice one CB. You were way ahead of our locals. 🙂
Radar really dying down around Pulaski County area……..are showers going to reform and intensify?
2″ and counting here in Bimble, knox co. !!!
That was my question…will things pick up again across central and eastern kentucky throughout the night??
I’m thinking the advisory should have included more counties than it did seeing as how many locations have received 2 inches of snow although some melted. Pavement is solid ice here and we have at least 1.5 inches(would have been more if it hadn’t melted).
Where in Richmond? North Rich roads look okay, but we seem to have missed out on most of the squall action so far, except for periods earlier this afternoon.
Hwy 80 from Somerset to London is a complete mess. I guess the road dept. was getting their weather from JKL. It’s dangerous on HWY just east of Somerset. Been several wrecks….I know the snow depth didn’t warrant advisories or anything, but the impact was HUGE!!!!! Come on guys/gals you should have warned the public.
I just drove from Big Lots to Kroger on the bypass. Crazy slick out here.
London roads a mess. Completely snow covered. I-75 north and south in Corbin stopped.
Joe Bastardi has been tweeting all day about a sharp turn to winter after mid-month. Maybe we’re getting somewhere after all!
How are the roads in Woodford County?
I spoke to a man at the Cracker Barrel in Frankfort who said that his family passed 3 accidents on I-64 just trying to get there to eat. His words: “People are stupid”. Please slow down! Where it’s snowing, it’s slick!
In Lawrenceburg, around 4:30..had a nice burst of snow….county roads are becoming icy and slick…be careful…I am betting no school or at least a delay for school tomorrow….shout out to JJTeach as well…thanks CB for all your hard and dedicated work!!!
I poked along like a little old lady on Paris Pike due to the fact that I could not see the road. Several cars whizzed past me and then they realized there was NO traction and they slowed down. Too late for some southbound traffic because I saw at least five fire trucks and many cop cars heading that direction. Where was the salt???
Slick as snot where I live even though we didn’t get a lot of snow. Local mets really struck out on this one and failed to properly warn people. Thank goodness for Chris!
Someone please tell me the radar will get better!!!
Thanks bud! You know I’m certainly hoping to see a delay or better, closing for Franklin County tomorrow 😉
Nice little snow shower came through L-burg a few min ago and put another coating on the roads. Hoping it’s doing the same in Frankfort! haha
Looks like the drier air is moving in….
the radar seems to be clearing out more here in east ky. are the snow showers and squalls going to give out over night?
Chris 1000- NWS Jackson 0, I have received over a inch just like Chris stated, but Jackson said I would see no accumulation, same story a different year, Jackson needs to get with it, this dog with a bone act they have is hurting the public. Roads are a mess here, accidents are frequent, but no warnings or advisories.
You are absolutely correct
I agree. The Jackson NWS is ultra conservative. This is not a good thing either. They are supposed to serve the public with accurate weather information, not mislead it.
All the NWS offices around here are conservative. Thing is, TV mets have to be conservative too for the same reasons. That’s why if you want the truth straight up, you have to hit up weather blogs and/or talk to a met in person. Nobody wants to put their neck out there and tell it like it really is, in fear that it might not come to pass and then they’ll look dumb. It’s a shame.
Wife just came in from work and said 75 and man o war near hamburg is slick and dangerous. Saw wreck at 75 to man o war off ramp. Good snow shower going on this area now.
Roads workers were all off today for new yrs holiday. Probably can’t get anybody sober enough to clean the roads.
What a joke….NWS in louisville just issued a winter weather advisory for most of central ky until 5am. DUH.
NWS Louisville makes the call…WWA now in effect for travel impacts overnight.
I thought Jackson NWS put out advisory for its locations…
Don’t entirely blame JKL NWS office on this one, blame government for not being ready on this one.
Treacherous driving conditions and almost 2 inches in the higher elevations of Tennessee! Ahhh!!
Amazing lights in the Southern sky! Took some awesome pictures!
NWS is government run…
Hello, Nurse! NWS is government.
is the radar going to fill in at all,or is the moisture gone? I assume it is gone since no evening update from Chris. About an inch on the ground, could really use another good squall!
Just found out the light in the southern sky is a gas line explosion in Estill County. Prayers going up.
Just found out the light in the southern sky is a gas line explosion in Estill County. Prayers going up.
You’re not gonna win this one…
NWS does not issue the go-ahead for salt trucks. Your local and state government do that, not federal.
Is the atmosphere drying up?
But they prepare based on NWS
I would approach this system differently than a blanket winter weather adv, using SPS’s that’s just me with my 5 months working at NWS-PHI. Nothing in many areas under the advisory. Roads are slick in spots allow caution!
On Clark /Fayette co line on US 60 Can see the reflection of the Explosion / Fire in Estill CO. Praying everyone is safe and no one gets hurt out there
The NWS is a total JOKE. Today’s events prove that. Chris you’re the best there is. Rather be safe than sorry & the NWS is AWFUL!
For those areas that JKL serves, an advisory went out and was expanded last night…We all knew it was coming, including your local news media, which I’ve heard let down many people as well.
As I’ve said, you cannot place the blame entirely on the NWS on this one
Roads are slick. Really? Ummmm, thanks Mr. Obvious.
yea and u have been sayin no accumulation like noone else…theres people on the road gettin killed today because people like u and our nws that give a 20 percent chance of snow with no accumluation…what a joke
had the same question, then comes the tweet. Should start backfilling with snow showers soon!
The problem with JKL is that the areas that are suffering the worst from this was NOT INCLUDED in the WWA. It’s a complete nightmare on roads in Pulaski, Laurel, Whitley, and Rockcastle Counties. People are stranded everywhere, roads shut down and all JKL did was issue a SWS this afternoon. JKL needs to ditch the criteria levels and base it on HUMAN IMPACT.
Main roads in Shelbyville were mostly clear but side roads and neighborhood roads are completely covered.
Here’s a quote from my site a few days ago. “Any accumulation of a few tenths of an inch of snow from any snow showers will be patchy” I also said this a few days ago on my site “Lows Monday night will fall into the teens for many with some low 20′s in the south leading to a concern for slick spots with any light snow showers”. I can’t really say anything about local NWS forecasts call either MIC if you’re not satisfied with the service the NWS provides.
you’re welcome.
Maybe they have their equipment in north Madison 😉
Besides a pretty good squall event earlier in the afternoon, we have been mainly clear with some off and on snow flurries… I wonder if the flurries are our squalls here now….
Some areas are getting action and some are not. That said, the accidents today show how these smaller events are more dangerous for driving than bigger events.
I can only speak for the Louisville area, but when the snow showers started in the metro The nws warned travelers about the possibilities of slick roads. I drove from Louisville to Evansville 90% of the roadways were dry. When I did come under a snow squall I slowed down to a safe speed. Sometimes people need to use better judgement on their own. If you live in higher terrain or elevation
there is always a better chance of more accumulating snow. Note the NWS in Louisville were on board for an accumulating snow the father east you went in Ky.
very comical, louisville nws issued advisory, but there is strip from the jackson nws that only has a special weather statement, than the rest of the eastern ky is in the advisory. Laurel county is quite treacherous at the moment, and almost certainly will be in the morning as well, but not in the advisory.
Mitch – your comeback is your welcome? Really, If I were you I sure wouldn’t be happy with your inaccurate forecasting!
Exactly!!!! Worst hit counties so far have been Whitley, Laurel, Rockcastle, and Pulaski Counties…yet when LMK upgraded to Advisory…at the same time JKL just said “will leave it at special weather statement”
SPSs don’t get broadcast to the public like Advisories do. I think that would be a terrible way to handle it considering the circumstances across KY this evening. I also think it’s terrible to wait until the snow ends to issue those Advisories like LMK did tonight. What the heck? Radar is clearing to the north now.
CHRIS NAILED THIS FORECAST TO THE FRONT DOOR! GREAT WORK!!!!!!
Enjoying all the spin from weather folks not named Chris. A certain Lex channel with a voice of reason led their newscast with about 10 mins on all the wrecks, then a certain someone did more spinning than Churchill weavers. Entertaining stuff.
We got a pretty good dusting late this afternoon. Had a near white out for about 20 minutes. It dumped a quick inch, and made all the roads, including U.S. 27 very slick. Had to get out for a short trip, and although my vehicle goes very good in weather like this, we were sliding and spinning on solid ice.
PLEASE be careful out there tonight, if you have to be on the roads.
By the way…no school tomorrow in Pulaski, I have been told. NOT GOSPEL. so listen for official word.
Kudos, Chris. Once again you nailed it! 😀
i for 1 do not know how the lowly nws comes up with their forecast but i do know they r automated and i do know that their main weather model is the lowly gfs. example, just last week at this time they were giving sunny and mid 30s for today. chris started hinting at this event about 7 to 10 days ago.
bottom line is this, right or wrong, egg in your face or not, the nws is govt. funded and the govt. is sticking their noses in every other aspect of our lives, i can not understand why they can not do what they r supposed to do and keep the public better informed when it comes to the weather.
i would rather err on the side of caution than not err at all. not every one has a computer at home and they rely solely on what comes from the local media and that is a very conservative forecast such as the nws and those that do have a computer may not get on these blogs like a lot of people do. the nws just needs to start doing a better job and we as people need to start calling and writing our congress and senators to start demanding a better service from a source that is paid for by of all people………all of us……..tax payers.
whether u have snow where u live or not, the whole area should be under an advisory for tonight at least if not for the snow then for the cold especially for all the travelers that have been out of town and maybe they started going home today after the long holiday weekend.
The worst joke is having the NWS office in Jackson. The office should be located along I-75 in South Ky.
Took an hour to drive home from Stanford to Burgin ( Mercer Co). Numerous cars sliding in the ice rink out there. Saw one Bronco going at least 40 mph thru a red light sliding. That car tried to brake but what in the world do people think or not think when driving on ice? Everyone at that intersection had stopped to watch that car slide. When I got to the Boyle / Mercer line it was completely clear. Chris hit the nail on the head. Thanks for preparing us!
Did you read the WWA…For impact to overnight travel not snow accumulation
Add southern Lincoln in there. When I left the clinic tonight and sent a nurse home from Stanford to Somerset, I worried about her. Looking outside earlier did not prepare us for the ice that developed under the skiff of snow. No wonder people were not prepared. At least we had this blog to inform us before we left out and knew what to expect! Apparently Pulaski was very slick. Stanford also. Roads there did not appear to be treated.
As usual, Chris was right. As usual, everyone else is spinning things, LOL.
In Northern Roane County, WV, we have about 2 inches. Roads are snow covered and icy.
many regions in the ADV are seeing nothing and have seen nothing today this gives them a false impression that snow is coming.
Although I do not have access to any reports that came in. That information may make my thinking different.
Exactly!
If you want to feel safe, come to north Madison. We can see stars at the moment and besides one squall eight hours ago, nothing much at all. In contrast, ten miles away in Winchester they have snow coating roads some.
CB did say that it would be this way. No surprise for us folks in my area, since MORE than used to it 😉
snow appears to be dwindling down
Not trying to argue. But why is it ok during warmer weather to issue a thunderstorm watch or Tornado watch…and the watch areas may stay cloud free all day and night and noone says anything..but yet during winter months….if the snow depth wouldn’t warrant “advisory levels” they won’t issue anything? I’m just curious. Alot of lives were impacted tonight in Pulaski, Lincoln, Rockcastle, Whitley, and other counties that were not included in WWA
Boyle County: Much less than an inch of snow as expected. But, heavy snow shower in Danville city about 6pm that dropped a heavy dusting causing slick conditions.
This being the first heavy dusting no salt has been applied to roads this winter so common sense says it will be more slick than usual with this amount.
I’m quite sure that I’m the only kid in Anderson county not hoping for a snow day tomorrow. But yet when I dont want one, they’ll most likely call it off. Great
So, do you think Scott Co/Georgetown will see any more snow tonight?
Video from Danville about 5:45pm

Yeah, my family in Waynesburg said it was awful in Lincoln Co. too. Roads have been a mess all evening. Glad you’ll made it to your destination ok.
Chris tweeted earlier saying snow will increase during the night.
You’re exactly right!! since the NWS is a government run program……the local and state road crews base their upon the NWS prediciton………
Really SPS’s don’t get broadcasted at all other than the NWS’s site!!! that would do nothing…maybe you should rethink what you would do….
Winter Weather Advisory map looks so stupid with the big block in the middle of the state without an advisory.
i for 1 do not know how the lowly nws comes up with their forecast but i do know they r automated and i do know that their main weather model is the lowly gfs. example, just last week at this time they were giving sunny and mid 30s for today. chris started hinting at this event about 7 to 10 days ago.

I completely agree. I’ve read on their discussions where they were just completely ignoring the models that were hinting at this event. I would rather know what “could” happen and be prepared for it than be caught completely out in the cold with my pants down..so to speak! LOL
Hey now people, watch what you say about the NWS workers. They work extremely hard at what they do, and as all meteorologist, they get stuff wrong. While I think LMK was conservative on snow chances today, they did quite well with not issuing an advisory until this evening. I think the advisory is well warranted, and was not needed earlier in the day. Just know the background on the workers at the NWS before you dis them. Because I sure would rather have the over TWC and Accuweather ANY day of the week.
Yeah, all the wrecks earlier in the day showed that an advisory was not needed, lol.
jeremy = complete idiot!
Blaming a meteorologist for people dieing on our roadways? Why don’t you blame the fools that travel 90 mph in whiteout conditions…
Mitch: Pay no attention to that fool…
Jeremy’s comment and those like it is the reason I rarely post on this blog. What a joke…
I do miss my old weather freaks buddies…
Agreed Tyler, well said…
GO Steelers..!
vinny.. u goon..going get tebowed..not everyone knows chris bailey and how accurate he is..most people listen to nws forecast and they gave my area 20 percent chance snow..no advisory..we got 2 inches and if people had better heads up they may have not been on the roads but i agree there are people that drive stupid..but most the stupidity is on our meteoroligist…theres more to forecasting than just reading models
Vinny, where have you been?
Should have said to Vinny, nice to see you back. Can’t believe people rely so much on the government (NWS) . When I drive I drive according to the conditions. If it’s snowing, I slow down, in addition to watching out for quacks who don’t have a clue. It’s winter so be careful when you drive. Don’t rely on your government to take care of you, it won’t happen.
