Good Monday and welcome to winter. Today is what all you cold and snow lovers have been craving for the past few months. This isn’t some big storm blasting the region, but it’s a heck of a shot of arctic air and bursts of snow that we’re dealing with.
I have some tools for you guys to track the cold and snow, but I want to touch on a few things first.
Snow showers and squalls will break out across the region today and some of the action may be quite intense. Think of the squalls as summertime thunderstorms… they blow throw with blinding conditions and very gusty winds and then they are gone. Areas getting in on the squalls can pick up some fast accumulations and even hear a clap of thunder. Check out the NAM simulated radar through today…
You can actually see the enhanced bands showing up on that. Snow showers and squalls will carry us into Tuesday and will continue to get a booster shot of moisture from the Great Lakes.
Here’s my latest thinking on snowfall…
I want to stress that we’re dealing with snow showers and squalls and that makes it hard to really broadbrush totals on a map. Some areas getting under repeat squalls may pick up totals higher than forecast while those that are skipped may come up a bit short. The farther west you live into central and western Kentucky, the less confident I am on totals until I can see exactly how the radar sets up.
I do expect travel problems at times today and slick travel becomes likely this evening and overnight as temps drop into the teens. Winds will continue to be gusty an will blow the dry snow around.
Highs today will stay in the mid and upper 20s for many with low and mid 20s on Tuesday. The gusty winds will make it feel even colder than that. Brrrrr!
Let’s track the blast of winter…
Current Temps
Lexington
Pikeville
Middlesboro
Whitley County
Frankfort

I will have updates as needed and will be sending out some rapid fire thoughts and reports via twitter. Have a great Monday and take care.

Looking better. Thanks Chris!
I wish Ashland would clean their camera. LOL Thanks for all you do! 🙂
Looking better and better!!!
To you central kentuckians seems theres a point to updating snowmaps……
Thundersnow is cool, even if a light snow. Assuming nobody gets hurt on the roads, of course.
78 days until Spring. I’m not a snow lover at all but I must admit, the first snow fall is always a bit exciting. Thanks for all you do Chris. Love the blog, even some of the drama in the comments section.
29 and very cold wind in Dorton, Southern Pike County.
Light snow in Staffordsville….hoping for some accumulation before tomorrow 🙂
As in….less is expected or more is expected?
3 nice snowband stripes are setting up to cross into KY from southcentral Indiana. Let’s go Louisville – Franfort – Lexington. Right in it’s path.
Snowing in Rockcastle now.
getting some snow flurries flying around here in knox co.
living on the edge is today song..
little to dry for mucgh more than a flurry to fall now, be awhile for any squalls etc.
I wondered about that but didn’t want to mention the “V”(virga) word around here. It seems people are a little on edge as far as the snow goes. When will the moisture be more available?
It’s a cold 28 here in Owensboro with a wind chill of 18. Although there is no wind advisory issued today, the winds are worse than yesterday when one was issued. It seems we may see some scattered snow flurries here tonight, but nothing major. I hope who get snow enjoy!! Have a great day everyone and thanks Chris.
I was wondering if this would be dry blowing snow or the wet heavy snow. WOrried about power outages hope it is dry snow anybody have any thoughts
dry,powdery,fluffy,
Thanks, Chris and all weather bloggers for keeping this weather blog going. I read a lot but seldom post. Looking forward to some winter weather, especially SNOW.

Just a few flakes so far in Shelbyville.
As of 10:20am London/Corbin has zilch, nada, zero, nothing!!!!!! Not even the smallest snow flake has fell. Yipppeeedoooooo
Local mets are saying this morning, little to no accumulation except for higher elevations.
Flurries in north Madison ATM.
Snowing at a steady pace in the beautiful town of Sadieville.
I’m in the London area and I’ve been seeing flurries since 8 this morning. They’re out there, not many though.
it’s 10:38 in gallipolis ohio and the temp is 29° and currently experiencing light snow. I already have a covering on the ground. and my humidity is 76…..pretty moist air
White out in Harrison County.
Wondering if there are any changes in the accumulations? NWS seems to downplay this afternoon and tonight here in Johnson County….are we on track?
Looks like Frankfort in the old dreaded dome effect. West ky even getting more than Frankfort area??
Looks like Bowling Green will get in on the action. If anyone lives up that way, keep me posted during the next couple hours and let me know if you see anything out of these snow showers/squalls…

More pics of the snow
Pretty good coating of snow here in Georgetown but most of it has melted. I75 is a mess around Sadieville though, our lovely road departments must not have looked at Chris’s forecast.
Another classic conflict, since the local mets are saying the air is dry, so not a lot of snow is hitting the ground, but CB stated the air is not dry. Not saying who is right or wrong, but a conflict, none the less.
At my house in Anderson Co… wind chill is 10 degrees, wind NW 17, everything is covered in snow. In fact, it snowed so hard about 10 minutes ago that you couldn’t see anything. Even the streets are now covered and the road dept. is out working on the BG parkway to clear bridges.
I will try and post a video of a intense snow band that moved through here in a few
Somebody please tell this Texan how to drive in whiteout conditions. I need to be somewhere this afternoon and will be on the road for a couple hours. I know if I slam on my brakes, I’ll cause a pile-up. What’s the proper procedure, just in case?
Snow shower here in Mercer.
it like MARCH WEATHER rain here SUN there, now the intensity picking up in areas as atmosphere cranking up, so going be good afternoon and nite of SNOWQ SQUALLS, like i said could piour at wlmart in manchester and dry and dairy queen.lol

rolo is CRAZY
that said that the ZONE leslie county S E and e were the wind flow gits the mnutains, bout as far west anything majior falls, that being 1-2 inch.
They said a massive pile up on I 75 in grant county Due to weather has shut the interstate down up there.
Best advice take it slow. Stay 2 car lengths from cars in front of you. If you start to slide tap or pump the brakes — don’t hold them down. Have a safe trip!!
in gallipolis ohio it’s 12:28 currently experiencing whiteout conditions and the temp is 27°. It’s been snowing all morning but finally got enough to cover the ground…..whiteout conditions have persisted for about 10min now…
I’ve been in London all morning since about 8. It flurried off and on, however when I got on the interstate to come back to Corbin, a decent snow shower blowing and trying to stick to even the roads. On I75 though some areas were visibility was reduced quite a bit. 🙂 Be safe out there everyone.
Just had a heavy snow squall move thru Southern Breathitt Co. put down a quick dusting to 1/2 in. of dry blowing snow. Roads are still clear. Not snowing at the time looking at radar what we just had was the heaviest snow squall we should see for awhile.
it’s now 12:53, and currently still experiencing heavy whiteout conditions……nearing 1.5-2″ of snow!!
Some intermittent snow showers have been moving through Owensboro, but the sun shines in between them. Winds are still strong with a wind chill of 19.
Light snow showers/flurries here in Elizabethtown. Had a good one that dusted my back deck. 🙂 Looking forward to some more!
Nice snow shower in Madison County-Union City area.
Thanks! I will be leaving soon. Lots of hilly, narrow, winding roads ahead. I won’t be sad if it is a snow-free trip.
Temperature has dropped from 34 this morning to 28 an hour ago to 26 now with a wind chill of 13.
Radar looking like we are about to get another good shower. 🙂 Snowing in Radcliff & Ft Knox & Brandenburg moving this way.
