Good Sunday afternoon and Happy New Year. It’s a rocking start to the year with gusty winds of 40-45mph at times. The wind is blowing in some much colder air this afternoon and evening with even colder air and snow waiting in the wings.
Temps will continue to tank this afternoon and evening with readings falling through the 30s from northwest to southeast. Follow the trend here…
Current Temps
A few flurries will be possible this evening into the overnight as we await the arrival of the arctic air on Monday. This will keep temps in the mid and upper 20s for highs Monday and only allow for readings to hit the low and mid 20s by Tuesday. Temps will drop into the teens Monday night. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder than what the thermometer says.
I continue to like the snow chances from Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning across central and eastern Kentucky. Snow ratios will be very high, so it won’t take much moisture to produce snow.
Here’s my first take on it…
The farther west you live, the less confidence I have in the forecast. Still… I expect flakes to fly all the way into parts of western Kentucky. I will update that map later tonight and put out a last call early Monday.
Keep in mind that most of the snow will fall Monday afternoon through the first half of Tuesday.
Happy New Year and take care.

A coating to 1 inch is not worth mentioning with regards to central ky. I’m off to find a snow making machine.
I’ll certainly take a coating to an inch. That’s a start anyway! I haven’t even seen a flake so far this season so anything is good with me. I would LOVE to wake up Tues morning and see FRANKLIN COUNTY SCHOOLS CLOSED at the bottom of the screen. You people know what I mean when I say that it only takes a coating of snow on the roads to cause a cancellation in a county that has a TON of back roads.
Bring on the snow!
Looks like it shifted more east than CB expected last night. Nothing left to see here folks, move along.
What a disappointment after all they hype from the blog. What happened to “lot’s of school closings”? Central KY with only a dusting, again.
how much for knott Co.
I will try to stay positive…maybe I will see some flakes as I travel east to Somerset….looks like Bowling Green will get none!
I’m with JJTeach…at this point in the season when we really haven’t seen any snow to speak of yet, a coating – if that is what falls where we live – can wreak havoc.
Will just have to see what happens. 🙂
That is all it every seems to be hype, hype, hype, and then same old same old.
Winter Weather Advisory for Bell, Harlan, Letcher, and Pike. Calling for 1-3 inches.
Ummm… what?
In central ky. Land of the snow deprived.
any chance the lines can shift west?
I knew there was a reason you kept mentioning wed and a possible clipper because it looks like you don’t have as much confidence in the chances of kentucky having snow except for maybe the extreme east. Plus, there must not be much precip because everyone is saying the snow ratio is high. Too much hype for little to nothing.
I believe it was Mitch who said about three days ago that kentucky could expect little from this because of the wind direction.
Easily the most disappointing start to winter in my memory. Not much hope after this transient shot of cold air. And I really could care less about a dusting of snow. I’m sticking to my prediction: parts of central and southern ky will go snowless.
A coating for central suggests the impact is more east rather than central and east. Not being critical and it is what it is (and has been for central Ky for a long time).
To outlook as expected is impressive, especially since not a posted peep by other mets.
I wouldn’t say snowless, but will be lowless (not a real word, but fits).
chris doing great job here, if u been ROUND for anytimng u know the UPSLOPE lake effect is fickle, it can be HAMMER DOWN in hazaed and 5 miles away just flurries. it can be sunny in manchester and then clay/leslie co border WHITE OUT. it just er the strem or should i say lines flowong to SE set up. i hacve to say the map pretty good as mountiain top get the BIGGEST UPLIFT.
tx BAILEY u doing great job.
PS BUBBA WERE U THING CENTRAL KY IS BOWLING GREEN, look that first call has central in a snow, yea not 2 feet but BAILEY never sid big, except he said far SE/EAST KY could see a NICE snow,.
Chris, I simply cannot wait until the new blog is up and running with the “weed out” feature so we can weed out a lot of these negative ppl who have nothing better to do than to repeat their negative comments over and over and over. Yes, you’re right ppl, it’s been a slow start to winter. Get over it! The fun is in the tracking.
Shew….I feel better.
Was not being critical and only referring to not much for central Ky. Seems this is being taken out of context.
the WIND DERICTION nowhere near ideal here, if it was a true UPSLOPE for SE E KY we see a DECENT SNOWFALL as we are going be below freezing, more WEST than south the flow is, so glancing blowing upslope here.’
be honest it little late but a coating to 0.75 inch here in manchester be cool to see with the chilly temps.
There is negative and there is simply posting based on the trends and the outlook. It is what it is. Not an issue of being positive or negative.
The reason you keep seeing the same things posted is the results have been the same. Please weed away, so you can have a one sided, positive
love fest. That seems more a fan site, but it is all in the weeds.
I hope Jamestown, Tenn. can get into that 1-3″ range :/ not likely it seems
At this point I would like to see a good snow shower and would settle for a little dusting.
According to what models shown yes then later he posted that the winds had shifted.more favorable
No
YES!! Thank you Chris! Louisville gets at least a dusting and I will take whatever I can get! Beggars can’t be choosers! Enough for a well aimed snowball scraped off the car hood… 🙂
I read the blog everyday in the winter, however, I don’t recall the exceesive hype that you have referred too.
Giving you two thumbs up!!!!!! I have just quit posting anymore because I hate snow and get attacked for it. Great comments as always from ya!!!
I am sorry for
Not knowing what I meant. Thank you for clarifying my thoughts. It would have been even more emphatic though, if you would have typed both letters in caps.
Considering I have yet to post a critical post of you and you put a jab yesterday and assert I am lying now is very intersesting. Not been hugged much?
Someone just tell me th truth: are we being too anxious and snow chances with inches or more are on the way or is this winter just going to be a true bust?
it does have a slightly more northerly component now which may allow for some flakes to make into the bluegrass region as well. Very warm surfaces are in place and model qpf at best is around .1 for far se ky. Would think top totals around an inch in the southeast. Though a lucky few could see advisory level snow in my view. normally ratios would become really good say 20:1 but a warm ground should counter this due to the showery nature of the snow.
yup for us to a get a good upslope event the flow needs to be more northerly.
Chris, notice snow on radar over Indiana and Ohio. Southward and Southeastward is good for us, right?
Again, not an issue of hating, being negative / positive or anything else. The general atmosphere (pun intended) of the blog has taken a turn IMO of more a fanzine site, rather than a weather blog. Weather involves science, so is what it is and seems better served for perspective beyond defensive postures and taking words as some people want to interpret.
CB rocks, plain and simple, but if this blog is intended to be subjective towards postive favor and defensive posturing, count me as a weed cut.
You folks have fun.
I am under the Winter Weather Advisory, but I am far from getting excited until I see snow…then it sticking! After that I might get a little excited.
I don’t think anyone is being negative on here when they are, in fact, being truthful. BuggaG, I back you 100%!!
Blaming the officials Chris, now you sound like a Louisville fan. lol just joking
Possibly 2″ or so in the far eastern to southeastern part. I don’t believe model QPF output takes topography into account very well….
Will the cold ahead of the snow showers not be enough to put a cold crust on the ground to accept the first flakes?
NAM sim. radar is pretty optomistic about snow showers as far west as Madisonville, with significant snow showers as far west as Loserville. So with the op. models showing some QPF consistently I’d say that we will at least see a dusting in the LEX area. I would use the word “dusting” literally, however. With a high around 30 degrees, those 25:1 snow ratios are dreams.
I swear when I say this…on my grandma’s last days she said, “Ya’ll be plantin’ those purty trees we saw on the Mertle Beach before you know it.” You know…I think maybe she is right.
Chris has been advertising this for several days and said he saw a chance for several to get in on the accumulating snow. He always hypes systems up, maybe because he knows most on here love snow. I read and have read the blog everyday and for several years and based upon this, if Chris starts talking about another system, it’s usually because he doesn’t see as much potential in the system as he once did.
i saw snow just now as a SHOOK MY HAIR!! lol
🙂 I hope your grandmother is wrong. but who know’s, this sounds about right.
NAM QPF output seems overly generous for parts of east and southeast KY. Perhaps, the snow to liquid ratio may be less since the source of the feed, the Great Lakes, will produce a ‘wetter’ snow than a dry, powdery one??? Perhaps 12-15:1 ratios instead???Something to think about, but still think at least 2″ for parts of east and SE KY.
to poster hoeu going weeed them out, u cant be a racist to somewone who willings signs up with real email, name etc. so how u going do that.
FACT IS its not a blog without different opinions and takes. if everybody kissed a@@@ then it be no fun. really. if someone see a reason to say a person on her wrong such as many who rag on olre ROLO then i think they should be able too.
now as far as the LEGEND goes, as long as its not vulgar and isnt stupid he not above anybosy crtizsm either. or being ask to explain stuff.
i find when BAILEY rarly wrong he admitts it, like early this or last month noew the rain to snow thing he ate crow when he missed it. so u cant get rid of people who stir the pot a little, hell this place would suc then.
i would like for CHRIS or let a other be able to edit my post into real setences and paragraphs.lolllllllllllllllllll
Bad call in Bengal’s final seconds. How can he not call pass interference on that one?
the whole league was against cincy today and cincy still finds a way to go to the playoffs. TERRIBLE OFFICIATING AND I MEAN TERRIBLE OFFICIATING. CHRIS WILL PROBABLY TWWET ABOUT IT.
That was a ridiculous “no call.” Bengals receiver was dragged down by his jersey. Should have bee first and goal from the one yard line, with one chance to score.
Well, it’s 39 degrees here in Owensboro with stiff winds still blowing. I don’t have to worry if I will get a dusting or 3 inches of snow, because snow is not given for this area. So, for those who will see snow, but not the amount they want, it could always be worse.
I just have to say one more thing. I seriously do not know where people get that Chris hypes systems. He never said you all were getting a foot of snow. I thought he put the possibilities in perspective nicely. Just because he mentions snow, doesn’t mean it’s the “big one.”
I was at my grandmother’s house this weekend and she has “easter flowers” that are about 2″ above the ground now. This weather has certainly confused some living things other than us!
“DOUBLE-LIKE”
Everyone is hoping for snow as am I, but there is a chance of a low snow winter. My senior year of High school (85-86) we missed no days because of snow. We missed when the tornado took off the high school gym in March of 86
Sorry, just sounds negative to me since I’m a snow lover. Had a moment where I couldn’t take anymore without saying anything.
Won’t happen again. You folks continue to have fun doing what you’re doing. I may just have to learn to look over it.
this is to james, whom replied to me in the last post about the storm next weekend on the gfs on the 12z run. you said it had went se and i disagreed, well my friend you have to realize that i live in wayne, wva just south of huntington, wva. so really we were both right my friend.
it is a mute point now though because it is off the radar scope on the 18z run, but any way this is what the blog is all about.
also, i don’t know who is tweeting to chris about the bengals should not even be in the playoffs, my friend u had better look at the 8 and 8 team that made it. imo no team with a non winning record should be eligible for the play offs. also in college football, no team with a non winning record should go to a bowl game.
that is why they have bowl games and playoffs so you can be rewarded for the type of season you had.
now to something that i have not said much about lately and that is of course the weather, after all this is a weather blog.
currently the temp is in the low 40s with a stiff north-northwest wind making it feel like the 20s. 1-3 inches of snow for my area by tuesday evening, hmmm, we shall see.
Morgan County—-65 degrees today for a bit–took down outdoor Christmas decorations—winds were wild—temps down to 43 @ 8:00pm—Glad to get in on some potential snow, but can someone explain the science behind why my county is always the dividing line for most snow calls? It is truly amazing and happens a lot. Good luck to everyone and go Steelers!
Corbin, KY Weather Advisories, Watches & Warnings
WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY
in effect until Tuesday, Jan 3, 7:00 AM
…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM MONDAY TO 7 AM EST TUESDAY…
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN JACKSON HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM MONDAY TO 7 AM EST TUESDAY.
* SNOW SHOWERS WILL DEVELOP OVER THE AREA DURING MONDAY AFTERNOON AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE NIGHT BEFORE TAPERING OFF TUESDAY MORNING. A SNOW SQUALL OR TWO IS ALSO POSSIBLE.
* ACCUMULATING SNOWS ARE EXPECTED TO BEGIN LATE MONDAY AFTERNOON WITH UP TO AN INCH ON THE GROUND IN MANY PLACES BY TUESDAY MORNING. LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS OF BETWEEN 2 AND 3 INCHES WILL BE POSSIBLE ON THE HIGHEST RIDGES.
* COLD TEMPERATURES AND BRISK WEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS WILL MAKE FOR FLUFFY SNOW SHOWERS DURING THIS TIME. THIS WILL ENHANCE TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS…AND ALSO MAKE FOR PERIODS OF LOW VISIBILITIES DUE TO BLOWING SNOW. COLD ROAD TEMPERATURES WILL ALLOW THE SNOW TO ACCUMULATE ALMOST IMMEDIATELY ON UNTREATED SURFACES.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES…AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.
Looks like Laurel ans Whitley Counties are now in the Advisory area. 🙂
Understood 🙂
Shame we have not gotten a snow beyond an ankle biter in order to weed out- the natural way.
Doesn’t have to be the big one to be hyped.
Why does Chris have this map of my area (Greenup County Ky/Scioto Cty Oh) has in 1-3 inches, but watching the 6pm WSAZ news and I see less than one inch for the same area…??confused?? which to believe??
Hey toney. Yea, I live in Lexington, so a little bit of difference there. Yep, the 18z lost it, but maybe it will show back up and maybe something will be brewing out there and the other models will pick up on it. Hope we both can get in on a good snow. Best wishes!
Yeah, that alone has made me defensive 😉
Yeah, that alone has made me defensive 😉
I agree. I can’t understand why people who are not satisfied with the forecast simply don’t go somewhere else and quit complaining around here! I love snow and its forecast too…but if it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t, and life goes on. As to wanting some big deep snow, I don’t necessarily….some of us may not have to get out in it, but I’d bet a whole lot more do than don’t and it really makes it hard for people who have to go out to work regardless, not to mention the elderly and those who live in areas where snow covered roads make things very hazardous. If this were my blog, there’s be no discussion area!
Would love to see a snow like the lake effect snows. Here’s part of a forcast for somewhere in Penn. for a lake effect snow warning. Monday: Snow showers. High near 26. Breezy, with a west wind between 21 and 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.
Monday Night: Snow showers and areas of blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 12. Wind chill values as low as -4. Breezy, with a northwest wind between 18 and 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches possible.
Where in the world did you read this?? I don’t see anything like you typed on here. Yahoo and accuweather both says nothing for London/Corbin
I got this on http://www.accuweather.com. I copied and pasted from the sight.
Here is the link that goes straight to the page showing the weather advisory:

Just went there at 9:10 p.m.
I COULD KISS CHRIS WITH HIS LATEST TWEET.
Something keeps bringing people and/or persons to this blog. Negative and/or positive! It must be good! snow bunnies or muddie bunnies! It’s all good, guys! Chris loves us all! Or else…this blog would not exist! Peace!!!!!!! and let the snow fly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!
looks like the Snow is starting sooner than thought.
News station tend to downplay everything, so in the event that it’s bigger they can make the title of the news story “Heavy snow falls leading to multiple wrecks and.. Blah blah blah.
Believe Chris. The other folks will come around. 😉
I guess you’re right Willis. I’m snow deprived and always hoping for it, not so that it would have a bad impact on people traveling or those who are elderly. Snow is beautiful and it makes me feel like a kid again. Even though I may be negative sometimes it doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate what Chris does. He always shows us the possibilities for snow, even it may be a slim chance because he knows how much we love it. Here’s hoping for a big one this winter!
I’ll say just once more..I don’t believe it to be hyped. If you do, well, that’s your issue and opinion.
Well why I am confused is that wsaz is the station Chris works for out of Huntington WV
Well, I hope that Chris’ line goes a little more westerly, so that Pulaski County can see a little snow. But, since we have not seen any this winter to speak of, it will be nice just to see some falling.
Disappointed, I know how you feel. But
one of these days, when we least expect it, a big snow will come, and we will both be happier. Right now, I will be thankful for whatever we get, if we get any. BubbaG is correct; we are just not in the right spot to get good snows anymore. Has to be something else, as the state has not moved. (At least, not to my knowledge) 😉
Have a good evening all. This darn head cold has just about put me under. Going to bed in a few as i have to work in the morning. Enjoy the football games tomorrow!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
been snowing here in Middlesboro for a few min now.
🙂 You may be on to something with the states shifting.
Don’t know about the snow….but this wind is crazy tonight!
Got a small gust of wind for a few minutes and Guess what came with it…SNOWWWWWWWWWhttp://WWW…..Was laying on contact on the wooden deck…Would not suprise me if someone gets 3 inches tomorrow into tuesday the way it was laying for a brieft moment..
I hate to ask this dreadful question but after seeing all this snow that is starting to pop up in some parts of ky, ohio and illinois. What’s the possiblilities of verga with our snow tomorrow? Especially considering that we’ve been on the dry side the last few days.
hopefully here in london, we can get some of the upslope snow as goes into the mountains, wishful thinking!
Per nws JKL discussion I took a closer look at instability with steep lapse rates and a little CAPE don’t be surprised if someone hears a little thunder from this.
Also everyone once again please LIKE WeatherNation TV a NEW 24/7 weather channel at http://www.facebook.com/weathernation and LIKE Chris on facebook at http://http://www.facebook.com/pages/Chris-Bailey/197923513552724
based on his map, I don’t he mislead anything. He said the farther east you would have a better shot…..that’s been the understanding for days now!
Models are showing a moist atmosphere at 850mb and 500mb……verga shouldn’t be a problem!
