Good Tuesday, folks. A weak cold front is working through the region today and it’s bringing more ugly to the Bluegrass State. This dreary look will carry over into the final day of the month on Wednesday before things improve for the first few days of February.
The longer range continues to look very fun, but winter lovers have got to be patient.
Let’s start with today and roll forward. Gusty showers and working in from the northwest and some wet snowflakes may show up in this. As the front blows through, rain and a few snow showers kick in this evening and take us into early Wednesday.
This shouldn’t bring anything in terms of accumulations, but it’s still some winter weather showing up in what should have been a wall to wall mild period.
Here are your radars to follow along with what’s out there today…
After a cold Wednesday, the numbers bounce back to start February on Thursday. Highs should hit 50 for many and those 50s carry over into Groundhog Day and Saturday, giving us some really nice weather!
Low pressure rolls out of the plains and heads toward the southeastern US this weekend and early next week. This may very well get far enough north to bring some rain in here from Sunday through Tuesday, but the models go back and forth on this idea.
The Canadian continues to bring rain in here…
The GFS decided to keep this system well to the south with the latest run…
I have zero changes to where this pattern winds up from Mid-February to Mid-March. Old Man Winter is likely to really flex on much of the country during this time as major blocking goes up from Greenland through the North Pole and ten connecting with a ridge along the west coast of North America.
This starts to show up in week two of February and quickly kicks into high gear. This is now within the range of the Ensembles and they have a very strong signal for winter weather in the east developing later in week two…
The EURO Weeklies have not blinked with the evolution of this pattern. This animation goes from February 11th through February 22nd…
This pattern likely has some serious staying power well into March. This animation shows our trough going from February 23 through March 14th…
The average 30 day height anomalies from the control run of the Euro Weeklies are nasty looking…
This likely means some bouts of big time cold and late season winter storm threats. People looking for specifics need to chill out… Chill out, get it? Thank you, thank you, I’ll be here all week.
Updates later today. Make it a great day and take care.
I just want to see the sun again.
Sunshine always helps with seasonal depression. We had the beginnings of a great winter pattern and lost it. Will it return in the finale month of winter ? At the present all the teleconnections don’t indicate a change just yet.
Thanks Chris. Any amount of spring weather in February is not a Farmer / Horticulturist friend. Hoping just the return to cold nights and daytime temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s. It seems to snow more when there is just moderate cold air in place.
Just sighted this intense, flaming orb in the eastern sky, and someone said “It must be the Sun…”
But I immediately realized that seeing the Sun shining over Bowling Green in January must be an illusion!
Joe are you in the area where the total eclipse is going to happen in a couple months???? I would love to see it. I will have to check with my sister in Indiana too to see if she can see it in that area???
Crystal, here is the link for complete information on the April 8th total eclipse, including every area that will have totality. https://greatamericaneclipse.com/april-8-2024
Only far Western and SW KY will be in the path of totality. Bowling Green, where Joe is located, is well to the east of the path of totality. https://greatamericaneclipse.com/kentucky-2024-eclipse
Thank you Mike for all the info it’s much appreciated
Also, much of Central, Eastern, and Southern Indiana are in the path of totality. So yeah, you should plan on seeing your sister then. https://greatamericaneclipse.com/indiana-2024-eclipse
