Good Saturday and welcome to the last day of the year. 2011 is about to become history as we turn our attention to 2012. It looks like the flip in the calendar will bring good news for cold and snow lovers across the region as an arctic blast hits town for the first few days of the new year.
This blast has been well advertised and I have absolutely no changes to my thoughts on this bad boy. Let’s talk about the now and the future with the headlines…
– Clouds will be tough to scour out this morning and we could hang on to a leftover shower or two. Some drying in the afternoon means some rays of sun to go along with the gusty breeze and temps in the 40s.
– Temps will be in the 30s as the clock strikes 2012. There should be no travel problems from mother nature.
– A cold front arrives New Year’s Day and may produce a shower or two as it crosses the region. Winds are really going to gust up and our temps will drop from the 40s early into the mid and upper 30s by late in the day.
– The true shot of arctic air moves in on Monday and should be accompanied by a period of light snow and snow showers. Highs will be in the 20s, but will feel much colder because of the gusty winds.
– Northwesterly winds will get cranking late Monday into Monday night and Tuesday. These winds will pick up moisture from the very warm Great Lakes and bring snow showers and squalls our way. The greatest concentration will be across the central and east and this shows up well on the models…

– With all the cold temps… there will be a big fluff factor with the snow as we maximize every bit of moisture available. Whatever snow falls where you live will blow around in the gusty winds. I will talk totals later this weekend, but I do expect accumulations for much of our region with some areas possibly getting in on a nice snowfall.
– Temps will continue to run cold into Tuesday with mid 20s for highs. Gusty winds continue to add that extra chill. Temps hit the teens by Wednesday morning.
– I am still watching a possible clipper for later Wednesday into Thursday. Some of the models are robust with this, while others aren’t very excited. The Canadian continues to like the idea…
Another update will come your way at some point later today. Have a great Saturday and Happy New Year! Take care.

I am still going with less than an inch accum for central Kentucky thru mid Jan with increased snow chances second half of the month and a season total of 10-15.
I hope I am wrong…..Looks a little better east.
I hope you are right about the second half of January; this pattern needs to flip or bring on Spring, this is tiresome seeing the cold air wasted like it will be next week!
can’t get much closer to spring weather than what we have been having
well another year and day off shooting for a big lick at the track.
lov all u all. tx CB THE LEGEND for letting ole rolo be apart of this blog.
I only hope one day ur back were u belong LEX KY!!
todays song is
OUR HOUSE!! in the middle of CBss street!!
With the snow ratio being extremely high. Some sections of north eastern Ky could receive a decent snow fall.
A COUPLE OF THINGS I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THIS MORNING AND THAT IS WHERE IS THE NEW LOOK AT TO THIS WEB SITE THAT YOU SAID WAS GOING TO START A FEW WEEKS AGO AND NEVER DID. DID U EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS WITH IT OR WHAT? ALSO, WHY IS THERE NO TALK OF THE BIG BASKETBALL GAME TODAY BETWEEN LOUISVILLE AND KENTUCKY? I KNOW THIS IS A WEATHER BLOG BUT GEEWIZ AS BORING AS THE WEATHER IS HERE IN THE HEART OF WINTER WE MIGHT AS WELL TALK ABOUT THE BIG GAME TODAY. MY PREDICTION IS EITHER KENTUCKY OR LOUISVILLE WILL WIN BY 5 POINTS OR LESS. SORRY FOLKS I AM FROM WVA BUT I GUESS IF I HAD TO CHOOSE I WOULD CHOOSE…..DRUM ROLL PLEASE………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..WELL , I DON’T KNOW CAUSE I SOMETIMES CAN’T READ AND I AM ALSO COLOR BLIND…….LOL!!!! HA HA HA…….OK ENOUGH OF THE NONSENSE, GO BIG BLUE, KENTUCKY WILD CATS ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!
Big prediction,,either ky or ul will win,,,come on man……..
Uk by 12
Then on Sunday bengals by 7 over the stinking ravens..bengals to playoffs,,could u ever believe that..I’m so excited to be 9-6 right now..go cats. And who-dey
Oh yeah, if it snows great, but I have zero hopes for any bad weather this year
i said there at the end cats all the way so that is my prediction. as for margin of victory, less than 5 points.
as for the bengals game on sunday, IF, and that is a big IF, the bengals can cut down on mistakes such as stupid penalties and fumbles like cedric benson’s 5 fumbles the last 2 weeks then and only then will they win.
they have all the potential in the world and i think they have the best personnel over the ravens but the key thing is they r a young team and they have not been in this type of play off atmosphere before but the ravens have been so let us see how it all plays out on sunday..
my take is if all things go right bengals will win by 6.
as with the weather, this upcoming snow and cold event is going to be bigger than a lot of people think it is going to be at this point. i think tuesday morning a lot of people r going to wake up to a surprise when it is time to go back to work and school. a lot of delays and closings along with the potential for some frozen water pipes.
my take on accumalations by tuesday morning for eky, southern ohio and western westvirginia is 3 to 6 inches by that time and after that it becomes a more scattered event with localized areas picking up add. accum.
as always time will tell but at least this is turning inti a nice little chat. thanks my friend for your reply.
All caps is bad forum and email etiquette. Unless you caps is stuck and you can not afford another keyboard, please refrain.
the bengals at 9 and 6 does not surprise me at all. the office where i work, i told them at the beginning of the season that the bengals would go at least 8 and 8 and anything better than that would be a bonus and most of them asked me what i was drinking at the time. lol!!! but look who is laughing now. ha ha ha ha lol!!!!!
so their success does not surprise me especially after that got rid of all the drama ‘queens’ such as whine bag palmer, and little sissies ochocinko and terrel owens. now we have a group of young men that r hungry and they want to win and that is what they r doing.
i really don’t under stand the attendance thing but that is another topic for another day.
why is all caps bad? sorry, was not paying attention, left it on by mistake. too many people r to technical these days. SORRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ANY ONE WITH ANY SENSE AT ALL COULD TELL I WAS NOT MAD AND YELLING BECAUSE AT THE END I WAS LAUGHING AND ALL BUT YES NOW I AM USING CAPS ON PURPOSE CAUSE YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TELL ME HOW TO USE MY KEYBOARD OR ANY THING AS FOR THAT MATTER, I WORK IN A PUBLIC OFFICE SO I NEED NO REMINDER ABOUT BAD ETTIQUETTE AND YES I AM A LITTLE UPSET.
So…I’m a bit snow starved. 😀 Aren’t we all? I have Monday off from work so I figured I’d take a drive northeast from Bowling Green. Any suggestions??
LOL!! My local forecast from nws/jkl. Monday-rain/snow-20%………Monday night-30%-snow shower . And chris is talking some potential accumulations. It’s no wonder he’s always ranting on the nws offices. Upslope snows/squalls are nothing new. But for some reason nws in jkl has issues forecasting them!
Chill-lax, buddy! You are resoponding and looking like a silly first grader…..
Head towards Lex., cut through Midway (cute town), and go on Old Frankfort Pike and eat lunch at Wallace Station-the ‘Upside Down Hot Brown’ is mouth watering yummy!!! Have fun!
Happy New Year Chris!! Happy New Year all bloggers old and new!! I’m ready for cold and snowy weather, not this bounce up and down Ky weather we’re having now. AND……squash that RED bid BLUE!! Go Cats!!!!
If there’s a possibility of an “accumulation” of snow, anyone care to guess what range it will be?? A coating, half inch??? Gimme’ something here, lol!! 😛
I’ll consider that! Thank you! How’s the topography up that way? Any hills higher than 1500′?
chris took out the “little. now its a nice snowfall. 😉 and btw chris i envy u at the game!!!
Sometimes the lack of maturity from what seems like older adults really makes me want to never come back and read this blog!
Chris says there a possibility for a nice accumulation! I would say that’s anywhere from a coating-3″. Chris said he would talk totals later this weekend! But that’s a stab at it! just remember the close you live east and closer to the mountains the better chance you have!
So…… What is Chris meaning by his latest tweet: “Don’t hate me bc of my view today.” does that mean our snow chances are going down? No!!!!! I want lots of snow days!!!! Please, please, please! Someone please tell me he’s talking about something different.
Oh dear, never mind. Lol I just pulled up his link and realized he’s at the UK game. Sorry guys, I’m crazy. Lol
He’s at the UK basketball game!
Lol. This is kind of funny don’t get me wrong I enjoy all the different perspectives of weather but when I saw joe bastard’s weather video amounted ago all I wanted to do was say HUH ! Whatever!! Lol he says after the next 10 to 15 days of artic air and some snow in tne east, he is VERY CONFIDENT the trough dumps in the west and the battle ground sets up NORTH of ky (imagine that)!!! And the south east well let’s just say you might as well get the lawn mowers serviced early!!!! I say HUH!!! E erybody has been out of the loop this winter ! Just a little snow deprived rant before the game!!!! LOL
Like
Hey buddy, when you get a chance what’s it look like in arkansas and kansas oh say Monday? We’re traveling home and were wondering about travel conditions Monday and Monday night.
No, gotta go farther North/East for that, but Old F-fort Pike is a Scenic Highway…beautiful horse farms, (barns are nicer than our house, haha)…Guy Fieri(sp)did W.S. on his show a few years ago…go Cats, and go Snow!!!
WHY AM I THE 1 ACTING LIKE A 1ST GRADER WHEN HE WAS THE 1 BEING NIT PICKY. I WAS ONLY TRYING TO CARRY ON A NORMAL CONV. WITH SOME ONE NOT CARING WHETHER OR NOT MY CAPS WERE ON SO WHO IS HE TO TELL ME TO REFRAIN FROM USING THE CAPS.
THIS BLOG IS GETTING JUST LIKE WSAZ.COM WEATHER BLOG. TOO MANY PEOPLE TO QUICK TO INSULT PEOPLE OVER STUPID THINGS.
r u referring to me or every one in general, because if u r referring to every one in general i could not agree more with you, my friend. by the way, did u notice? no caps whoopy!!
We don’t hate you because of your great “view,” i’m pouting cause you didn’t take us all with you!! lol-Have fun!!
I am referring to everyone in general! 🙂

This would be awesome be farther north and cold air sticks
With all due respect Bubba but do you need some tissue
PNA going – which supports that and pumps up southeast ridge. Core of cold over northern rockies with lakes cutters for Jan after this very quick period of chill of 2 days not 15. Expect Jan to be at or a couple of degrees above normal even taking into account the 2 day chill at the start. If the Polar vortex (PV) breaks down over the north pole then Feb may be better though and he got his lawn mower serviced for nothing, would only give that a 50/50 shot though on the PV. Otherwise spring will be here in typical la-nina fashion to start FEB and Lexington sets a new lack of snow record.
Good effort Cards! Held UK to lowest point total this year and gave the SEC teams something to scout. I gave U or L a 10% chance of winning the game today and that is the same percentage that the Lou. area will get a decent snow this winter. My petunia’s our still growing and I may not have to replace them this year. I just don’t see any long term cold spells anytime soon and we never get much precip. from the clippers. HAPPY NEW YEAR’s to all. Be safe.
Awesome!! I’m in SE KY….Should be interesting!! Thanks for your input!! 🙂
Awesome!! I’m in SE KY….Should be interesting!! Thanks for your input!! 🙂
“LOL” my petunia’s are blooming as well, and ny daylillies are coming up along with tulips and daffodills! We need a daffodill dashing! Crocus crushing snowstorm soon!!!
Keeping my finger’s crossed for a couple of snow days I think I will go ahead and stock up on snacks and cocoa. The great hill behind our house means we usually have a crowd of my son’s friends, if there’s enough for sledding!
Hit the Hal Rogers parkway and head east. Around about Pulaski you can start to hit some hills that are around 1500 ft, keep going east on 80. Merge on 75 south to Corbin, take hwy 25 east into south east ky were you will find the biggest hills and mountains our state has to offer. Enjoy
To really see some upslope head to lynch and if the road up black mountain is clear climb to the top and stare out at the earth from 4100ft plus.
Where’s that bench you CHIRPED on a couple days ago that would take the cats down????
Hey Chris, what are the chances of a snow day in Woodford County this week?
Just looking at the latest trends from the gfs & nam it does not look that promising for the 99%(population).
CHIRPED!!! I like that. Great game today. U of L’s bench out scored UK’s bench 36 to 6. Never said the bench would take them down. Just said UK had no bench and that would be the factor. To bad our starters couldn’t keep up with yours….Russ Smith was the MVP of the game even with the loss. THINK SNOW…
It is hard to believe, but I have Petunias in a pot that look like while I was gone the past week have grown and are starting to form buds. Daylilies are growing, my cold-hardy palms that normally go dormant are pushing up new fronds, and another southeast plant, Society Garlic is pushing up new growth. In a nromal years the cold amkes it to where they don’t come up until late May-early June. Only having a low of 18 my tropical Hibiscus would comecback if it doesn’t get much colder. When I lived in FL this was the lowest we got while I lived there and they comec back. I am sure all of this will get knocked back at least once.
Jake
yeah! I dug up all my non-perinnial banana trees, elephant ears, and cannas. Could have left them in the ground at this point. Event the cold we are getting this week won’t freeze the ground…..Need some cold to knock back some of the flying pest…
The honey suckle and forsythia have greened-up fully with leaves in my neighborhood….donde esta winter?
Not seeing how asking someone to not post in caps is whining.
Why does it matter how he posts if people get offended because a person types in all caps seems to me people look for a reason to be offended now days. Now thats just my 2 cents. Flame away
About 0.00008%
I’m with you on that. No flaming here.
the reason for the bench play is one player off the bench Smith scored 30 points. The rest of the Louisville players scored just 32 points combined. Maybe Rick P, may want to consider putting him in the starting line up.
1 FINAL WORD, I WILL POST HOWEVER I PLEASE TO DO SO UNTIL THE MAN WITH THE PLAN, MR. CHRIS BAILEY HIM SELF TELLS ME TO DO OTHER WISE. THANK YOU
Happy New Year Chris and bloggers!!!
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz………………………
wake me up when this turns back to a WEATHER blog.
