Good Wednesday and welcome to May!! It’s a great start to the 5th month of the year with summer flexing a little earlier than normal. Temps turn downright toasty for Thursday before we focus on a more active setup moving in just in time for Kentucky Derby Weekend.
Temps today hit 80-85 in many areas with a mostly sunny sky. That said, I could see a stray shower or storm trying to pop in the west at some point.
The temps really take off on Thursday with middle 80s common and the chance for a few thermometers to hit the upper 80s…
The threat for a few showers and storms will then rumble in for Kentucky Oaks Day Friday, but it’s not all day stuff. There’s the chance for a lingering shower or thunderstorm will be around for Kentucky Derby Day. The EURO is the most aggressive with the lingering stuff on Derby Day…
Temps look to be generally in the 70s for both Oaks Day and Derby Day.
The setup after that looks to feature the chance for some storms returning late Sunday and continuing into early next week…
The Control Run of the EURO Ensembles is showing this stormy setup through the first half of May…

.68” of rain yesterday and the plants are loving it. Even the birds are all a-twitter this morning. A lovely day is unfolding.
My latest research into Summer 2024 indicates the potential for one of the hottest summers on record for the United States.
I’m expecting a La Niña to develop by late this summer and the top 6 hottest summers on record from a cooling demand perspective were either in a La Niña or had one developing.
Possible but keep in mind “official” temps are all going to be skewed warmer because of where they are recorded… airports… So this summer, when KLEX says it’s 97 and the mesonets say it’s 93.. keep that in mind. I remember scrolling through twitter and seeing a short clip of a Phoenix met talking about their record breaking temps… but he said the hotspot was Sky Harbor airport.. several degrees warmer than surrrounding…and that’s the “official” temp.
Yes, they totally need to change this practice. I think it’s a good idea to take readings st the airport–just not “official” readings that the records are based on.
