Good Thursday everyone and thanks for making KWC your online stop for weather. Today is a day of change across the state as our temps take a big tumble behind a cold front passing through. The colder air moving in may make for some interesting weather for southeastern Kentucky on Friday. Could some aqreas get in on an early taste of winter? Hmmm… more on that in a bit.

Showers will continue to be common across the area today and some locally heavy rains will be likely early. Much colder air will work in from the west as temps drop into the 40s. A brisk wind will make it feel even colder.

Track it all, right here…

Current Temps

The cold front will settle to our south and one last wave of low pressure will ride northeastward along it late tonight and Friday. This is what the models have been fighting about for the past several days. The American models like the GFS and NAM had been showing nothing, while models such as the European have been showing this system.

The latest runs from the GFS and NAM  have trended strongly toward what the European Model has been showing for several days now. Take a look at the GFS Ensembles to see what i’m talking about…

Light rain will break out across Tennessee overnight and work into south central and southeastern Kentucky by dawn. This should continue throughout much of Friday. How far north will it make it? I would not be surprised to see some drops all the way to Interstate 64. Areas getting thick clouds and light rain will see temps way down in the low and mid 40s for highs.

Can parts of southeastern Kentucky see some light snows mixing in with the rain? The answer is yes… that is certainly a possibility.

A very strong disturbance will dive in from the northwest Saturday and will cause low pressure to develop along the east coast. You can see all this on the maps above. This system will have to be watched as it continues to trend a little farther to the west on each run. As it stands now… areas JUST to our east across the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia and points northeast may see some snow from this. That could include some of the big cities from D.C. to Boston. That setup would mean a shower or two would be possible around here. We’ll keep an eye on it.

The Halloween weekend is a chilly one and there is another strong disturbance that may show up on the scene for Halloween. Weather may end up playing a role for trick or treaters and this is another system that needs to be watched.

This has been a hyper busy October and it shows no signs of changing as we head into November.

I will update things later today, so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.
