Good Saturday and welcome to the last day of August. We are sending the month out on a busy note as a strong cold front rolls across the state. This front brings the threat a few strong to severe storms and unleashes a much cooler pattern to start September.
Scattered storms will be noted early today with an increase in the action this afternoon and evening. Just like in recent days, storms will be loaded with lightning and torrential rains. These storms may also go severe at times, bringing a damaging wind and large hail threat along for the ride.
Here’s today’s Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
These storms will impact outdoor activities and may impact a few college football games today, so keep that in mind.
This front doesn’t fully cross the region until Sunday and that means a few more showers and storms, especially in southern Kentucky. Much cooler air then comes in behind this front with Labor Day looking amazing! Highs will range from the mid 70s to the low 80s with low humidity and a great looking sky.
Temps by the time we reach Tuesday morning may sneak into the upper 40s across parts of central and eastern Kentucky. Bring it!
Things remain really pleasant until a southern system tries to bring a few showers in here later Wednesday and Thursday. This is ahead of a much bigger system dropping in here late this week into the weekend. This setup can bring a healthy round of rain before a major push of fall air…
Temps going WELL below normal are possible…
If that kind of setup verifies, it would bring about a very early Pot of Chili ALERT. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!
Those kinds of things happen when you get a deep trough in the east…
Notice how that also shows some kind of tropical system getting into the Gulf of Mexico around the same time.
There are currently two candidates to become that storm out in the Atlantic…
I leave you with your last day of August storm tracking tools…
Possible Watch Areas
Have a great Saturday and take care.
It was so nice to see the pop up storms Friday… As it got dark and windy and the leaves on the trees were blowing I was waving goodbye to the 90s….it wasn’t fun… see ya
They might come back.
As this awful Summer has gone we probably have not seen our last 90 plus degree temperatures Jeff.
Yup. Could smell the ozone-laden downdrafts as nearby pop-ups poured water on parched ground. Weren’t so lucky here. .07” meant most raindrops stayed up in the tree canopies. Today’s forecast brings (tempered) hope.
Thanks Chris. Maybe some good rains for some of our northern counties, but the chances are low for my area of the state. It may cool off like we had on the morning of August 22nd ( 45 degrees, ) but not this time in my area. My local forecast is calling for temperatures in the low 60’s, and highs in the 80’s, and a warm up by next weekend. Rain chances will only happen for a lucky few through next week.
Hoping that the tropic’s stay inactive, we shall see. Talking with my Sister and Brother in law last evening( via zoom meeting, ) and they have had too much rain this Summer in Southwest Florida.
Have a great weekend everyone !
Yesterday’s high of 100.0°F marked the third day in a row that my PWS recorded triple digit temperatures. That, combined with the fact we’ve gone 13 days without rain, is one reason why walking across my lawn has a distinctly crispy sound. I have had my fill of Summer heat and look forward to a transition to my favorite time of year. Although Fall in recent years has consisted of a period of above normal temperatures followed closely by below normal, maybe this year we could see real Autumn weather…for a change.
We just had some nice showers heavy at times but I wish it lasted longer. It looks a few more maybe coming my way. Halloween will be here before you know it. I remember that snow on Halloween night one year and very cold If I remember right last year was very cold but no snow.
Does anyone have the stats or temps for halloween 2023 last Halloween thanks ???
Crystal, If my memory serves it was a warm Halloween here in South Central Kentucky. We had a very mild Winter with not even a flake of Snow reported, which I think is normal for my area.
Up in South Central Indiana we had 4 inches of wet Snow on October 30th, 1994. The earilest accumulating Snow that I can remember. I am still waiting for the rains that are suppose to come followed by Fall like temperatures ?
Just another well above normal summer day in Richmond, but I will await some moisture tonight. I still see one more push of 90s before true fall sets in.
GO CATS!
