Good Monday and welcome to the first full week of May. The weather over the past few days has been nothing short of ugly with heavy rain and chilly temps. We will slowly come work back into a typical May pattern for the middle and end of the week. That may come with a stormy price as we crank up the thunder machine. Oh.. and we are tracking the potential for another shot of chill.
Let’ start with today and the upper level low that’s pulling away. This thing is still close enough to give us scattered showers and a possible rumble of thunder. Temps will be in the 50s for areas socked in the clouds and showers. If you can get a few rays of sun… your thermometer will hit the low 60s.
Tuesday will feature more of a broken sky with a scattered shower or thunderstorm. Highs will hit the upper 60s to around 70.
Much warmer air pushes in for Wednesday and we are going to jack up the humidity and instability. This will lead to an increasing threat for thunderstorms for the end of the week into the weekend. Check out GFS…
That’s a pretty juicy air mass, so these storms may produce additional heavy rains that will need to be watched. Can we finally get in on some strong storms? We shall see.
There’s another strong cold front diving into the plains states to start the weekend. Many of the models are showing this to some degree, but the GFS is bringing the chill by the end of the weekend…
Lows for next Monday morning on the GFS look a little something like this…
Yep… that looks about right for this spring.
Have a good one and take care.
Ugggg
My gardens are smiling!
And the temperatures are low enough that I can get out between showers and comfortably do some more weeding.
Love it!
True, I also loved the sunny and warmer stretch we had last week, but in my world rain is a very good thing as it keeps me from standing out there holding a hose for two hours a day to establish new plants. There’s plenty of time for warmer temps this summer so as far as I am concerned let spring linger as long as it wants. Don’t much care for torrential downpours but this type of on again off again rain is delightful.
YMMV 🙂
From that map, it looks like this shot of cold will be more concentrated in the Ohio Valley. Many locations in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi set all-time record lows for the month of May in the previous blast.
For the record, the coldest May temp ever in Lexington is 26–Set on May 10, 1966. I sincerely hope we DO NOT break that record. A hard freeze at this point would be bad news.

I’m hoping that model run for next weekend modifies, at this point we will be near June before this ugly weather breaks??
We have had years without winters in KY are we now going for a year without a summer?
These little storms in Southeast KY are VERY efficient rainers.. under one right now!!
ZOMG!! I just want to get my garden in the ground.
Small pea-sized hail in Richmond, only lasted about 30 seconds. Lightning as well.
There has been more sunshine than expected, allowing daytime heating and convection to occur. Now scattered thunderstorms are popping up! I love days like these with mountainous Cumulonimbus clouds and sunshine with storms.
Not hot or cold either.
