Good Friday everyone. There is an old saying about what a difference a day makes and it’s certainly appropriate when describing our weather out there today. Thursday brought temps in the 60s with March like winds and now mother nature is smacking us back into reality with some rain and snow.
Temps today are going to be some 25-30 degrees colder than where we were 24 hours ago as most areas stay in the upper 30s for highs. This cold air is behind a front that’s putting the brakes on just to our south. Low pressure is working along the boundary and is throwing moisture back into much of the region… especially along and south of Interstate 64.
Light rain increases from the southwest today and will gradually mix with and even change to a period of light snow this afternoon and early evening. Check out how some of the forecast models see the precipitation type playing out today…
GFS
NAM
Much of this will fall as light rain into early afternoon with some snow mixing in before a transition to wet snow by mid afternoon. Much of what falls should be melting, but it may snow just hard enough for a light accumulation on elevated surfaces in a few spots.
Again… most of the precipitation will fall along and south of I-64. Track it all…
Current Temps
The mix will quickly end this evening with temps dropping into the upper 20s by Saturday morning. Saturday should see highs mainly in the upper 30s and I am keeping an eye on a disturbance dropping in from the northwest. This may cause a few flurries in the north and east by Saturday night.
All eyes will then turn toward the next storm on the menu for Tuesday and Wednesday. The models all handle this differently as a few show a relatively weak storm, while others blow it up into something bigger. Odds strongly favor this bringing rain for Tuesday with the chance for colder air and a switch to a mix of snow on Wednesday.
Ironically… most of the models are in better agreement for Christmas Weekend and that’s a good thing for those wanting a White Christmas. A nice trough swings in for the middle and end of next week allowing for a possible storm to get going by Friday. The models all show this to our east right now and give us a shot at some snow.
The GFS is even coming around to showing this system…
The GFS Ensembles have been all over the Christmas Weekend potential for a while now as they have been giving a strong signal.
The Canadian Model has also been signalling this for a while and continues to do so…
As always… we shall see.
I will have updates on today’s rain and snow as needed here on the blog and via twitter. Have a great Friday and take care.

Again! 1st….Never thought that would happen. Five more days until Winter officially starts. Looked back over data from our last four wettest 2004,1996,1979 and 1950 and they were all followed by wet months. Although not much fell as snow. This has been the wettest year on record for many of us. Let’s hope the colder temps arrive in time so a few of these lows to come in as Snow….THINK SNOW!!!
and this ias a perfect snow set up, and once again jusat a few miles makes difference. little more colder air pulled in and SOUTHERN KY be getting pummled.
ohh well how boiut a song
YESTERDAY WINE BY George Jones

ok let dive into next weekend models see what we see. BRB
Holding at 34-35 degrees and rain here in Somerset. Seeing the occasional flake mix in. Is evaparational cooling a possibility here given the rain rate?
Bengals/snow always so close, but yet so far!
Ready to see what the models have to say Rolo!!!! Hopefully some Snow News!!
Headline from NWS in Jackson…
Latest NOAA Outlook Calls for Above Normal Temperatures to Continue in January
Guess it’s time to write this winter off and wait for a better one next year. Of course, there is the roadtrip up north. Chicago is bound to get something this year so it seems wiser to run to the snow and stop expecting the snow to come to us. 🙂
Lake effect snow…and upslope (I think that is correct)…I’ll take either/both.
Dont really post on here but love reading although it gets childish at times but anyway I was watching CBS news last night and they said 3/4 of the country would be under the LaNina effect for winter which they said would be warmer than usual and KY was right in the middle of the warmest. So does this mean no snow entire winter?
Ok everybody talking white Christmas but forecast for Se KY om Christmas day is 55deg. How the crap can it snow
ok what kinda phasing goint take place with the SW low, now does it get togther quicker move out towards east louisana if it does were talking bout a big storm.
im not a weather person so my wording not great, more phasing willmean bigger storm. the run im talking bout there phasing takes place well before it get to LA this the GFS 6z i think i looking at. the trough will tell the tell as well how it sets up etc.
right nowe look like could see storm cranking up in arkletex region taking a route eastward up between the APPS and east coast.
it ll bout when it cranks up, it could blow up move way back west or blow up later. as usually all bout timeing.
let me say my thoughts it rolo words,
I see possible APPS runner that MIGHT crank up into a storm that could make us very happy. alot of run to go but I right now think a favorable track is 40 percent possible for late week XMAS storm.
if i had to bet right nowq i say a EASTERN APP RUNNER.
in closing ALOT MORE INTERESTING NOW THAN IO THOUGHT IT BE, there a chance for 2 straight WHITE XMAS especially SE and E KY.
Now you are talking Rolo!!! White Christmas…yes, I’m dreaming of one!!
OK..talk about irritating!! Chris’s tweet says: snow/sleet in paintsville mesonet has them at 38*..and its been pouring the rain here in knox co. all morning with temps. 37-39*..I got a feeling this winter is gonna be a ROUGH one when it comes to trying to get snow to fall let alone stick!!..oh well, I keep going back in my mind though to 82 and 83..yes im old enough to remember those yrs..LOL. Christmas of 82 was sunny and 70! for record highs..83 brough record cold, snow and below 0 on Christmas day…so maybe next yr..! 😛
Radar shows rain here at the office in Nicholasville, but nothing has fallen all morning.
yep member that year well … I was golfing the day after Christmas, 1st time ever on the course that late in the year, and wore short sleeve shirt
wow wouldn’t that be something to see again

the 6z run he shows is awesome for a white christmas! sad thing is the 12z lost it…lol…
Boyle County: A little snow/sleet/rain has fallen today. Unmeasurable even in the liquid state.
that what i was refereing to in my post.
look like a classic low COULD happen, but i u andf i know how that goes week out.
How much we see.
Brandon Robinson of WYMT weather said thiet are no snow in the forcast for next weekend.
I’m so happy that December has been bust when it comes to snow. Keep the snow away, I pray everybody north of Kentucky or South of Kentucky gets the snow. Bring on the warm temps ans Sunshine.
Before we had the blockbuster winter storms of the 1990’s, we had several winters that were warm and wet/dry. The winter of 1990-91 and 1989-90 come to mind (although Dec 1989 was rocking). This winter will probably go down as very warm and wet. There’s just very little hope on the horizon. The NAO is staying positive. Very little sign of cold air staying around for any appreciable amount of time. Honestly, I think there will be areas of Kentucky that pick up less than 2-3″ of snow for the entire winter.
Radar looks nice around Frankfort but not much reaching the ground, have seen a couple of flakes here ever once in a while. Speaking of flakes, Sunshine FLORIDA might be the answer of all your prays & dreams :)!

i just wish you would go away….
Any day now, I would imagine…
Marsha, you’re a very rude person. Don’t take your snow frustration out on me. Swear snow junkies are so hostile. Have a great snowless weekend.. hugs
Hey chris, when the new site gets going PLEASE add a Block MORON BUTTON so we can not see certain posts from certain MORONS….Muhahahahah
I was just called a moron, wonder if Chris blocks this person too for harassment, because I clearly didnt anything about that person or even said anything.. Geezzz get over people, not everyone likes snow.. get over, get over the the fact its going be a warm rainy winter.
Harassment…LOFLMFAO…..Whats a matter sunshine..Daddy hit you in the head with a snowball when you was little..Poor Baby…Come on over an we will share a cup of hot chocolate together while its snowing….Muhahahaahaha
Judging by the way you act on here, I bet your one ugly person.
Seriously move on. So what if it appears that CB is wrong about this winter. You weren’t around last winter when he nailed the December forecast for Central/eastern KY. I’ve been following chris for a few years, and I’d say he can nail the mid to long term better than average.
LOL…lets see…Chris says rain/snow mix for friday before CHristmas….:)
and that other guy…lol..in lex. not tg…lol…says its gonna be 51 and sunny christmas eve, and 49/sunny on Christmas day….I’d say that forecast is straight from the Grinches lair…lol….
That was rude and harrasing at the same time. Judge of personality. Trolls typically are unhappy people. Lol
Lincoln stop harrassing me and calling me, names, I didnt do anything to you.. Shouldn’t you be busy stealing forecast and forecast maps from professionals mets? btw.. ive seen your pics, ur the ugly chubby one.
does anyone know why coffeelady is not posting anymore?
Sunshine is no longer around.
Seems this winter may stick to that convention a lot more than folks here will like.
Sunshine will aways be on!!!! Chris doesnt like the truth, this is one sided blog,he doesnt like opinions from other, just from the ones that adore him and adore snow.
Brandon Robinson said it to far out for a white christmas.

It’s one thing to come in and respectfully disagree with someone and contribute to the community.
It’s another to Troll… this my friends is the worst example of trolling I’ve seen in quite some time.
Don’t feed the troll.
Nothing wrong with being chubby, I’m a diabetic. And if you have been stalking me on Facebook, well, that is just plain weird.
As a long time follower, I would first like to thank you Chris. In my line of work as an engineer, I rely on your knowledge and weather reports on a daily basis. Along with a large community of fellow weather nuts, including myself. I have learned more in the past three years following this blog than I have in my 34 years of life. THANK YOU. I’m looking forward to the new blog site. HAVE A MERRY CHRISTMAS. (if anybody deserves a snow storm, it would be you, I hope you get some for Christmas)
first it might end up 65 sunny next weekend,
but no TV FORCASTER going say anythingbout snow m there going say what the model/NWS is giving att tahat time.
that whats so cool bout BAILEY and blog he lays out what models are saying good, bad and the ugly.
he lays out all the possible things that could happen if things came togther and that for us to discuss,
fact is any snow/storm we get aint going show up a week out. it will be a SUPRISE 48 hours or closwer. yea it might show up on models 5 or 6 days out but it leave hide says somethingelse then come back or not.
right now ROLO says this for XMAS weekend,
Fryday temps in 40s with partly cloudy, skies. FRYDAY NITE into saturday chance of showers and or snow showers temps in low 30s high low 40s. same for suinday.
that what u say when anything and everything on table.
i said earlier 40 percent chance that we get low pressure that turns ito a APPS RUNNER, now REAL METS PROS are saying great lakes storm right now and nothing to get excited about.
well that true if it was next weekend right this minute but it aint.
not trying to blow smoke up anybody kaboose, but there a chance for a XMAS snow, but as u know it gotta be a perfect senario for this to happen but it in the cards.
sorry for my awful typing, my keyuboards bout had it, i get to quick and the hell with proof reading, but i know most u can work what i call the ROLO REDNECK PUZZLE.
I did like this site and a snow lover but watching people attack others for not liking winter is too jacked up. I’m finding another weather blog to read instead of this kindergarten room. Lincoln I thought you was better person than that. Rolo take care. Bubba G keep doing what you do! Peace out, Merry Chrstmas and God bless
Ps: Sunshine keep your head up, nothing wrong with having opinions!!
What a relief…thank you very much, Chris. Looking forward to the new site and to registering.
Good call CB!
