Good Sunday everyone. We’re waking up to the coldest temps, so far, of the VERY young winter. We are on the cusp of another hyper active weather pattern in the two weeks leading up to Christmas that will bring plenty rain and snow chances to the region.
In the short term… it’s all about the cold temps. Readings will be deep into the low and mid teens for some areas this morning with afternoon highs heading toward 40 under sunny skies. Track the temps here…
Current Temps
Morning Lows
Monday will get off to another cold start with temps into the low and mid 20s. A warmer afternoon is in store as our temps head closer to 50 degrees. I do expect a few clouds to increase and we will have to watch our southern counties for the threat of a late day shower.
The scattered shower threat increases into Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of a plains storm system that gets cranking. That storm rides into the upper midwest by Thursday and will drag a cold front across the state. Widespread showers look to be a good bet for Thursday with much colder air replacing the shot of mid week mild.
That sets up an interesting forecast for the weekend as the real deal surge of cold hangs just to our north. This puts our region in a situation where an overrunning event may get going by Saturday. This shows up very well on the GFS Ensembles…
The Canadian Model has something similar…
Rain or snow or a mix of the two will be possible with that setup… assuming the models are actually onto something. (That’s always a stretch )
On a related note… a change to the blog is on the way soon and should be implemented this week or next. This will be a new site that has many different features for you guys. My little baby is growing up and the millions of hits it gets each year tells me it’s time for an upgrade. Contrary to popular belief… I do not get paid from those hits.
The new site will be right here, so you don’t have to worry about your bookmarks. There will be some changes to it as you will now have to register to leave comments. That’s the way most blogs are set up and I have tried to keep this one as open as possible. A select few people who use many different screen names sometimes stop by just to cause a ruckus and nothing else. Those days are about to come to an end.
I’m excited by the new site and think you guys will enjoy it. If you have some last minute input on some things you want to see included, just let me know.
Have a great Sunday and take care.

15 degrees at my house this morning in Lawrenceburg.
If it is not going to snow, I’ll just take this kind of weather. Clear cool (to cold) nights and sunny delightful days. Today and tomorrow are going to be nice.
Chris,
Thank you VERY much for all the effort that goes into your forecasts. You are the first Website I visit every morning. Your weather expertise benefits us all. You have a real gift with words, making your postings informative and very interesting to read. Keep up the good work! You are appreciated!
agree 100% !!!!!!!!!!
I’m beginning to worry our chances for a white Christmas are gonna be SPLIT!!
Was it in 2004?? when paducah got blasted with over a foot of snow just a day or two before Christmas, and the rest of us east of I-65 was crying because it was rain or mix…seems as if the pattern this yr..sure Favors that same area again for Christmas snow! while central and east ky. is the headache zone!..
Chris, cant wait for the upgrade and new look !! Thanks for all the hard work you put into this site!! and the years to come!!
Hey Chris, I’ll sign up-don’t mind a bit. looking fwd to the update! Thx for your work and good luck.
hello from the town of wayne. at 9:30am the temp is in the low 20s with bright sunshine after a low of 16 degrees and as chris said in one of his tweets, “not too shabby with a bare ground”. about the new changes coming to the web site, i think it is long over due to where a person has to register to leave a comment. i know i have had to make changes to my computer and i have had to make extra security features do to the fact my grand children, yes my own grand children know that i get on these web sites and leave comments, well they get on the web sites, some times in my name, some times in other names and type bad things about or to people. i only wish chris would do this on his other blog as well, wsaz.com, because over there we have a terrible problem with the same thing. so yes chris i will register and i will leave the same weather related comments that i have been leaving for the past 2 to 3 years. if there is a dirty comment left on here from my tracking ip address please e-mail me and i will take care of the problem, i think i have already solved the problem but some times things do happen. oh, by the way, i know you do all this for free and you do not get paid for the number of hits it gets. i know this cause i have a personal blog page i just started that i will be letting people know about this week some time but i do not get a dime for any thing associated with the blog. this is not a weather blog, this is a general info. blog. thanks for allowing me to be so windy this morning, i guess the people should be allowed to be windy since nothing windy is going on in the weather dept. thanks and god bless.
gooood morning KY and world.
well couldnt been a better loss earlier in season, just wish it wasnt to IU.
I was pissed off at first cause we never treied to pressure ballhandler make him give it up, but after hearing coach CAL say i told our kids to foul i feel better. we had 2 fouls to give and TEAGUE fould the kid as screen came but REFS swallowed whistle.
anywho TEAGUE grew up yesterday and became a MAN and that IMO was a WIN!! only thing that keeps this team from winning it all was our PG and folks we got a REAL PG!!
P.S. MR SUNSHINEEEE ur days of being SIBLE are over, lol
Perfect north opens in about two hours. Thank the lord. My snowboard is loaded in the car. And I am finally going snowboarding! It has been since March (Snowmass). Even though perfect north isn’t snowmass, it is better than nothing lol
I think you overestimate the ability to track IP addresses. Did you know that, in most cases, a persons IP address changes often. Sometimes as often as they power off their computer?
I for one don’t mind at all about registering. I am a devoted blogger! I don’t comment as often as I use to, but I’m here just the same!
Maybe you could include links to closings because of the weather.
School closings, cancelled activities, church services. maybe you could put a link to one for northern KY. and another to the southern areas of the state.
In my humble opinion this is the best setup/pattern that we have had to get a bowling ball low to roll across the plains! this could very well bring the type of systems that JAN of 1994 and 1996 probably before christmas!
All these systems will probably only bring cold rain and flurries at the end. The law of averages are against us here in the great commonwealth. I hope I am proved wrong.

A link to your weather forecast would be nice as well as a link to the maps that the public has access to. Thanks for continually updating the blog.
That storm early next week is looking more like a lakes cutter the SE ridge just rebounds to quick as once again anywhere east of the miss river just gets a quick glance of cold. Will have to wait to new years for a pattern change as warming in the stratosphere is expected to start next weekend. That will help force the -AO and bring colder times in Jan. 1984-85 is a new analog in my view though not to the extreme of Jan 85 which was very cold.
I should point out the location of that warming is over the poles.
i never power my computer off. if that is the case, how come chris is always warning against those that get on here and cause trouble under different names but under the same ip address?
Remember this song MR and Miss Sunshine.
Sunshine go away today don’t fill much like dancing…
Come march them cats will be awesome…
Warning and doing are two very different things. But as an example, I can, in about 1 minute, make my IP address show that I live in the Phillipines, China, India, or several European Countries. How can someone block that?
If he does that, I certainly hope he segregates out Eastern Kentucky, or it will always be full in the winter.
I hope not the extreme of 1985. That’s the year it dropped into the single digits all the way down to Jacksonville, FL and was 19 in Orlando. I think it was -17 in Lexington (air temperature) and maybe -17 in Nashville, TN. Wind chills, even with the new chart were about -30!
MAC Address.
December 1984 featured a good 4″ snowstorm in Lexington at the beginning of the month. Be interesting to see if we can get any measureable snowfall during this month with that stubborn SE ridge in place.
I remember that year. I was living in Breckinridge Co. It got to -23 there and I did not have water for nearly a week because of a frozen water line
How about a panel on the side that list comparison data like last year’s high and low temps, average temps and precips, precip to date also the average and record high and low, as well as record temps for this date. Comparisons are always interesting and should be easy to automate.
I love to hear from my fellow snow deprived Woodford Countians. Comment more often.
Sounds like Chris’ doesn’t care for those who call him out for hyping up the winter forecast and “weather baiting” the snow junkies..lol
oh with that said, chris your new page could use a Chat room.
explain the difference please.
Mr Sunshine, I don’t think I’ve seen you add anything positive or constructive to this blog. So explain to me why you comment and what if any point are you trying to make.
I would like to see a link to free maps not that i know how to read them..
ohhhh what about those….
!!!!!!!!!!!! HOOSIERS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no he look forward to u but not post comments then reply under different name agree with yourself.lol
a mac address basicaly identifies a computer has nothing to do with the ISP the IP address just tells location
Hey MikeM!! I’ve been so busy lately. My brother has just been given a second chance at life with the implantation of a LVAD heart pump. I’ve been busy working and driving back and forth to Louisville! It’s been rough!! I’m still around though!!
If I’m “weather baiting” and you continue to check this site several times a day. What does that say about you?
Now that’s a good point. Getem Chris:)
I just hope & pray you guys are undefeated and ranked #1 when you come to rupp on Dec. 31st. I cannot wait for the smack down that is coming to the red tweety birds.

Hey Chris, my input on the blog would be a like or dislike button, kinda like on facebook…… 🙂
firs of all, Im not mr sun, i don’t even know what that is, If Chris can see the ISP adress , he call tell you that. I swear some of you snow junkies are so hostile against anyone who dislikes snow.
Doesn’t say anything about me, But sounds like you’re admitting to fabricating the winter weather.
hey i know we will get beat by UK every year while UK has the coach they do.. one and done players make a tough team but i can see UK winning a championship until her gets his players to stay 2 years
sunshine we just need to block you from our minds and skip over your comment i have learn in the past with this blog just over look them and they will go away they like the drama. chris you have so many bloggers that know this is not true we have been with you long enough to know that…..
Miller & Jones but with that said your point is well taken

All Chris is trying to do is start a conversation with people who are totally into weather. People who look at models & past history. If it makes you feel better I believe this winter is going to be above normal. Hell, I would not be surprise if we have a few days straight of seventy degree temps.

He fabricates winter weather, and you fabricate sunshine. Hate to tell ya, but it sure has been rainy and mopey lately. Aside from the last few days, it has been a rainy mess!

This is the simplest site to read for an amateur if you want to get into it deeper your going to need to request help from somebody that likes to get into deeper. Mitch above seems like he knows a lot about maps, models, atmospheric conditions.

You guys ran your mouth all week about beating IU down. How did that work out for you?
Not on here, so why do you? Takes a true sports fan to come on a weather blog and run your mouth.
I think highly of Chris Bailey and I appreciate the great meteorological insight by some of you on this blog. With that said, I really think it’s best to start lowering expectations, in case you haven’t down so already, and just accept this winter as one that won’t be good…rather it is one that we will get out of the way for a better one in 2012-13. 🙂 Rather see people not go through such aggravation and positivity rooted in what can’t be controlled. Again, thank you Chris Bailey and those who chime in with solid/professional analysis day after day.
In the season of x mas. I come with only peace to this blog. Merry x mas to all the fine State learning Institutions and a Happy New Years!

I don’t fabricate anything dude. But the fact that you keep coming back and back tells me i’m doing something right. Let’s see if you make the cut on the new site. Something tells me things won’t match up to allow you to keep posting.
We both know why you are here. Enjoy your limited time.
“Fabricating weather” lmbo…….”baiting SNOW JUNKIES” even funnier, thank you thank you thank you, i needed a good laugh today….if Chris is so bad, why are you here? And as far as WINTER BEING A BUST! HELLLLOOOOOOO it is still technically FALL! Get over it and move on, I’m sure there is another weather blog that you can HATE ON! In fact I know there is and he LOVES the attention! Chris you know your TRUE FANS lOVE YOU AND RESPECT YOU!
My late suggestion would be a continual 5-day forecast (with temps) for, say, Lexington. Nothing too detailed just give us an idea what to look for the next 5 days at a glance.
First of all, I’m a lady, not a dude, and second Chris, no reason to get all upset over the truth, and Thrid, I’m not the Mr. Sunshine person or any of the other several people that agree you hype it up. But with that said, I’ll live if Im blocked from here, it cracks me up to read comments from show junkies calling u a legend, i bet u eat that up, you love it when they kiss your butt, but u cant stand it when people challenge your forecasting skills. btw.. people like Tony Cavalier are legends.
This is one more reason I love you Chris! You’re awesome, this site is awesome, and you’re comebacks are SO much better than this Sunshine dude. Can’t wait for the upgrade to the site and this possible wintry weather coming over the next couple weeks!
Well Lincoln, if you want to stick your nose in it, lets start with how you don’t know nothing about weather and pretend to know everything, always ripping weather maps off from forecasters at the last min and posting to your site.
Is that crying I here? Oh no.. That’s just the sunshine going DOWN.
Chris the blog is like a riot scene today hahah you have sunshine lashing out yet again. And the you have a mild sports fight. Next thing will be talking politics and religion.:O
Why don’t you tell us how you really feel?
weather baiting?!!! haha hardly! CB always talks about POTENTIAL, he NEVER declares snowstorm 7 days out LOL. IF you follow CB’s forecasts closely you will find he calls medium and long range just about second to none. Now alot of folks can predict the day of and good for them but CB isn’t the one showing a a long range map that shows 95% of the country in “equal chances” category HAHAHA!
Check out Chris’s other blog. I believe thisis what you are looking for. http://weather.bloginky.com/
This is getting crazy! Chris your awesome, cannot wait for the new look to the blog!
ohhh do you mean in 2012 when the world is supose to end.. wait is that the next election.. guess the world will end when people elect the current prez again….
sorry had to do it..
but i read some where about a like and dis like button.. im all for that since i started the UK bashing
I AM U OF L FAN
kinda like sunshine changing screen names
I am officially never clicking on the comments section again. Unbelievable
Granted, he talks about cold and snow in August, and there’s always that proverbial snowstorm just on the horizon even when it’s 60 in November… but yes Chris is a great guy. 😉 Even I don’t always agree with him, but some of the comments left on here today went past the line in my opinion. Just too far…and Santa is keeping track.
it is funny stuff. I think we all take the high road and be the bigger persons. We love talking about snow and either agreeing or disagreeing with whats to come. Ignore the the ones who dont want to do that. Ignore them and they will go away.
Long time lurker. Love this site especially during winter! My favorite part is when chris sees something and then the regulars chime in on what they see. Have no idea about the jargon, but really enjoy reading the comments between everyone that relates to the forecast. Good job you all you regulars that add to this site. It is appreciated by us lurkers.
🙂
Ok “sunshine”, even I will admit that Chris sometimes does show snow when there might not be any. But chris is an amazing meteorologist and no meteorologist is perfect. Never will be. Chris is doing his best to show us what might be out there. He does an excellent job at it too. Just remember, he is the meteorologist, not you. and you might wanna go look up the definition of sunshine, cause you DEFINITELY have not been a sunshine on here today. Just sayin…
Looks like high time to -NAO Sunshine…that’s right, do I hear a ‘blocking pattern’ setting up???
right now according to alot of sources the southeast ridge is going to break down by months end here, def by mid january which i great news for snow lovers 🙂
Wow, while doing my normal check of the site I thought there must be a snow storm brewing with this many comments but thats not the case…..the “blocked” pattern sounds to be in order soon!
Hope your brother does ok. Sounds like possible transplant? He’s in my prayers.
any chance we can get some snow on the ground in the next few weeks or if the -NAO is setting up
sources? links? 🙂
Does anyone know if this will actually happen? Seriously…I hate the word ‘ridge’ 100%!!
http://www.wxrisk.com read into his extended range
i am just hoping we dont run into any bad weather around the 17th or so from kentucky to houston tx. a little rain we can handle, severe storms , snow or ice stay here in kentucky for all y’all to enjoy. epecially the snow 🙂
i forgot to mention, that the trip to kentucky to houston tx, we (me wife, 18 month old daughter and I), will be traveling by car. I really hope the weather cooperates with us on our drive to houston , so my wifes family can see their grand baby for the first time. 🙂 also hope the lord gives us a safe trip there and back home. 🙂
also hope that y’all here in kentucky will get that snow you want for christmas.
Bailey does a fantastic job. We (me included) just get a little aggravated when the weather does not go the way we wont it to. This is a blog and not a weather “forecast site” kinda like an area forecast discussion. Kudos to Chris for his professionalism. Like others for the sake of discussion throw in my two cents. Bait or whatever you want to call it, so be it. He still offers insight that you can not get anywhere else………….Thank You Chris!
