Good evening, folks. Your friendly weatherdude has been down and out with a bug today, but the weather never stops and neither do I. I wanted to drop by for a quick update on where this pattern goes as the country gets ready to go into a prolonged deep freeze.

The pattern taking shape for January will be headline making for bitter cold and snows. This isn’t a one and done look, it’s one hanging around for most of the month and may very well linger into early February.

The changes start with a system moving in on New Year’s Eve with rain and wind ending as some flakes for the first day of 2025. That will be followed by a light snow maker zipping in Thursday night and Friday.

From here is when the harsh pattern looks to kick in. Our first WST is likely waiting on the system coming late next weekend into early the following week. We’ve had a great signal for days now and I expect that to continue into the week ahead.

The only new model we have since earlier is the GFS and it shows that system very well and shows the system coming behind it as bitterly cold air sinks in…

Once again, we find operational models showing the potential for below zero temps during this period…

The AI version of the EURO doesn’t show precipitation type, but it’s similar to the GFS with those two systems…

As I mentioned, this is a prolonged harsh winter pattern. The latest GFS shows additional threats following this up into the middle of January…

And the bitterly cold shots just keep coming….

I’ll see you guys back here for the full update later tonight. Until then, here are your windy tracking tools…
