4:30pm Update

The next 2-3 hours across far southeastern Kentucky should turn fairly snowy. The back edge of the precip shield is still in this region and temps are dropping quickly. This should lay down a slushy accumulation from the Big Sandy Valley southwest toward the Williamsburg area.

Again… elevated surfaces and grassy areas will be the prime targets for the slush.

Take care.

12:30pm Update

Good afternoon gang. Flakes continue to fly across much of the bluegrass state early this afternoon. Light snow and flurries have been noted across much of central and western Kentucky with moderate snows across parts of the east.

The snow in the east continues to mix with rain from time to time as it makes the slow transition to all snow. The slower this process is, the less accumulation you will pick up. Still… a slushy snowfall continues to look likely for parts of the east and southeast. Most of this will be on grassy and elevated surfaces as we have a wet ground. That means a lot of the snow will be melting as our temps should hang just above freezing this afternoon.

Watch the upper low across Tennessee as it works to the east. It should help give a moisture boost across southeastern Ky into the early evening hours and that’s when the bulk of whatever accumulates should occur.

Temps tonight will dip into the 20s meaning slick spots are likely in many areas.

More updates as needed… take care.

Previous Update

Good Wednesday everyone and welcome to a wintry day across the bluegrass state. A complex storm system is cranking up to our east and will bring a dose of heavy rain to snow across many areas today and early Tonight.

I have a ton of toys for your tracking purposes. Let’s chat a bit before we get to those.

– The track of the low is pretty much set, but any slight deviation of the track and timing can have some pretty big impacts on the weather around here.

– Heavy rain will start the day across eastern and southeastern Kentucky. This could even cause some local high water issues. Western and central Kentucky could see some rain and snow early today before it switches to light snow and flurries.

– The rain in the east will quickly mix with and change to snow into the afternoon and evening hours as cold air wraps in behind the low. Exactly when this change happens where you live will be THE determining factor on how much snow get.

– There will be a period of heavy snow across eastern and southeastern parts of the state. We have a wet and fairly mild ground so there will be some melting that cuts down on totals. That said… the rate of snowfall can overcome this as it snows faster than it can melt.

– This is a VERY quick hitting snow that has about a 6 hour window to work with.

– My thoughts on accumulation remain unchanged…

– The heaviest snows will fall across far southeastern Kentucky with lighter amounts the farther west and northwest you live.

– Keep in mind whatever falls where you live will be very slushy with much of the accumulation on grassy and elevated surfaces. Temps in the 20s later tonight should cause some slick travel.

– I am NOT  fan of rain to snow forecasts as a ton of variables come into play that can impact snow accumulations. It’s the hand I’m being dealt so I have to play it.

Let’s track whatever is out there…
