Good afternoon, everyone. Thunderstorms are racing across eastern Kentucky as a potent system rolls through the region. This ushers in a much colder pattern that will bring harsh winter weather into the region, highlighted by the potential of a significant winter storm by Sunday.
The storms across the east are bringing hail and high winds through the region. Winds without the thunderstorms are cranking today as the low sweeps by to our northeast. This sets the stage for cold winds blowing on our New Year’s Eve with a few showers and some snowflakes kicking in.
Snow showers and flurries will then be noted on New Year’s Day with some hit and run coatings possible. You can see these snow showers on the future radar from the HRRR…
The next system sweeping in brings light snow Thursday night into Friday. A light snowfall of coatings to an inch will be possible for parts of central and eastern Kentucky…
The models continue to show this potential for a light snowfall…
I will likely upgrade to a Winter Storm THREAT later today or tonight for Sunday into Monday. A significant winter storm will threaten our region during this time and may very well bring heavy amounts of snow and ice to this part of the world.
One low is likely to track toward the southern Appalachian Mountains before transferring energy to another low along the east coast. This scenario would put us in the Battle Zone of precipitation types…
The 6z EURO is the latest version of that model we have as of this Noon writing. It only goes out through 1am Monday but you can clearly see the same nasty signal from the prior run of the model…
The Canadian Model has a similar overall look and feel…
The GFS is likely showing its bias in being too far south and east with storm systems…
I’ll have the latest on WKYT-TV this afternoon after football and will drop by for another update or two here on KWC.
Until then, let’s track this active final day of 2024…
Have a Happy New Year and take care.
Ill believe the snow part when it happens….
