Good afternoon, everyone. It’s our first Winter Storm THREAT of the winter and it’s for the system coming at us Sunday and Monday. This is likely to deliver SIGNIFICANT amounts of snow, sleet and freezing rain to the Bluegrass state and surrounding areas.
For those new to KWC, I put out a Winter Storm THREAT to heighten awareness to the possibility of snow and ice and that’s what we have here. As we get closer and confidence increases, we upgrade to a Winter Storm ALERT. If confidence goes the other way, we stand down and wait for the next one.
Here’s a very early look at the impacts this storm may bring to your location…
Some fresh bullet points for you guys:
- The track of the low is still the key to this whole thing.
- Right now, the models are all in good agreement with a similar track I outlined in my last post.
- The low goes from near Memphis to near Pikeville then fades into southern West Virginia.
- Precipitation types and amounts are and will continue to be a work in progress.
- That said, the threat for a MAJOR snow and ice event for Kentucky is increasing.
The latest GFS is a crushing hit to Kentucky…
The Canadian Model is in good agreement with that…
The European Model has been consistent in showing what the GFS and Canadian Models are now showing. Here’s the early morning run of the EURO…
I’ll have updates on WKYT-TV this evening and I’ll be back with another update here on KWC later in the evening. Until then, let’s track a few flurries and snow showers to open 2025…
Enjoy the rest of the day and take care.
Let’s hope this goes so far north that no frozen precip falls whatsoever.
Looks like a sloppy mess for southern and SE Ky..Maybe the change over to rain will keep the lights on if we even get any freezing rain..
Yeah, I’m very concerned with the ice potential from this storm south of I-64. It could get very nasty. Personally being in London I’m hoping this thing tracks a little farther south to get us more into snow.
You are probably right in order for us to get snow in this area everything has to line up perfect. It’s so aggravating for snow lovers it seems like it’s barely above the temp to let it snow or by the time the cold comes moisture is gone. I would love to know what causes that does anyone have any ideas????? I will wait to see what Chris says for our area but the ice potential is definitely increasing it seems. I guess I will buy some good flashlights when power went out last week I was going around with tiny flash light. I will still hope for snow we maybe be surprised.
That happens more often in La Nina Winters. When it’s warm it’s wet and when it’s cold it’s dry. Just the opposite in El Nino Winters. We don’t have an active southern jet stream this Winter to give the whole state a widespread Snowstorm. Maybe your area wiil have a lot of little Snows this Winter from clippers moving southeast out of Alberta, Canada. That’s about all one can expect in our location.
With every run, it comes up with a significant ice event for Maple. We were hit hard without any power for almost three weeks in January 2009 major ice storm. I hope the lows goes way north, and we would be in the dry slot of the storm. It’s still days away and subject to change to rain and warmer temperatures, followed by the dry and frigid temperatures and high heating bills.
I remember that Schroeder about the Ice. Let’s keep our fingers crossed. I also remember that beautiful snow you were talking about. It doesn’t seem like we never lost power either. I loved snow so much even as a kid I would go next door to my grandmothers house and sneak out because Mom was afraid I would get sick. She would wrap bread wrappers around my gloves and boots. Great times.
Looks like WKY is in the snow ice to rain?? We can’t ever be 100 % all in on snow…..
We can if we ever receive an El Nino Winter with a positive Pacific and a negative Atlantic. A lot of phasing occurs with the southern jet stream and the northern jet stream to make a complete Snowstorm for our entire state.
Bummed southern Kentucky will likely miss out on this snow but would rather have rain than freezing rain. Hopefully the northern trend continues today
If it did Snow, it would be that awful dry Snow that drifts. The most beautiful Snows, I remember were the heavy wet Snow that clings to the tree branches, and one could build a Snowman, and without being so cold. Low temperatures in the 20’s after the storm. I have not seen that kind of Snow where I live now, but it happened in my home town in Indiana.
Ouch..Another brutal run of the GFS..Hopefully it’s over achieving on the ice and the cold following..
The latest run showed Maple receiving Ice on Sunday and moving quickly out by Monday as dry Arctic air takes hold. At this time, very little snow through mid month.
