Good evening and Happy New Year. Our Winter Storm THREAT continues as our confidence level rises as we get closer to the Sunday and Monday storm system. Significant amounts of snow and ice are likely and will be followed by bitterly cold temps.

Nothing has changed with my Winter Storm Threat map except for me zooming in closer on Kentucky…

Here’s a quick breakdown of some things to keep in mind…

The Weather Prediction Center has ramped up the chances for significant snow and ice across much of Kentucky on Sunday…

The models continue to be in VERY good agreement with this system and that, of course, lends confidence to the forecast.

The latest GFS is a crusher for Kentucky…

Here’s the closeup view of that same run…

Temp from the GFS show only far southern and far southeastern Kentucky going above freezing for a few hours. This animation takes us from 7am Sunday through 7am Monday…

Winds with this system may reach 30mph at times, creating wind chills that will be much colder.

If we do have a significant snow and ice pack across the region, temps can drop below zero on more than one occasion next week. This is what the GFS is showing…

The traditional run of the EURO matches up with well with the GFS with this storm…

The late afternoon run was just a touch stronger and farther north with the low…

There’s a really good chance the EURO is too strong with that low and in return is too far north.

I’ll see you guys with the latest on WKYT NEWS on the CW Lexington at 10pm and at 11 on WKYT. Of course, I’ll be tweeting some updates and be back here on KWC later tonight.

Enjoy the rest of your New Year’s Day and take care.
