Good Wednesday, everyone. The threat for strong and severe thunderstorms will increase across Kentucky today as clusters of boomers roll in from the northwest. This is a setup that can bring fairly widespread damaging winds to the region.
These storm clusters will try to bow out and that’s when you can get the big time winds. In addition to the damaging wind threat, large hail and an isolated tornado will be possible. Torrential rain and one heck of a light show will also be likely.
The greatest threat for severe weather will be from this afternoon into the overnight hours. Additional storms will be around from Thursday into Friday.
Let’s get to tracking…
I will send out updates and warnings via twitter: Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog. I will also have updates on my Chris Bailey WKYT Facebook page.
Take care.
Thanks, CB!
Looks like things are already off and hopping. Storm Prediction Center early this morning looking at a new Severe Thunderstorm Watch that could be near if not including part of western Kentucky, including Paducah.
Thanks for the updates, Mr. Bailey. However, I don’t have a twitter feed anymore, on this site or the blog site. Don’t know what’s wrong. Appreciate the time you take to keep us informed.
Not sure why, but the twitter feed has been gone for sometime. However, one can go straight to the horse’s mouth π

I, too, have missed the twitter feed on this site. I do not “tweet” but I know how to get on twitter and find it. I just really liked having it at the top left for so long- it is what I always used for rapid updates b/c 1. No TV and 2. Quicker than NWS warnings/weather radio notices. Would love to see it back here.
Meanwhile, things weather wise are relatively benign at the moment. No watches for now. The storms in east Kentucky and southern Illinois have weakened somewhat. But storms in southeast Missouri are flaring up and they could affect far western KY soon.
Looks like the NWS Paducah radar is back in service, good timing.
Thanks, Chris. Looks like it might be a long evening and night for you.
Keeping twitter close, and the blog in my tray, as well as KYT on the telly! got all the bases covered! π
SPC has a “Mesoscale Discussion” up. Possible watch (40% chance) being considered for central KY. Perhaps a Severe T-storm Watch, but a low-tier Tornado Watch may not be out of the question. Louisville and Lexington would be affected, possibly even Cincinnati and Owensboro.
Also, as CB just tweeted, a Flash Flood Watch in effect for northern Kentucky – mainly within the jurisdiction of NWS Wilmington Ohio which covers parts of northern KY.
Central KY might be in the line of fire today? It feels ripe outside here in Frankfort for severe weather! A few tornado warnings might pop in KY today?
I’m hoping this stays to the west because the March 2 event was targeted at CKY and East Ky got hammered…..not that I’m even comparing this to that particular event in ANYTHING but location…
T’storm Watch for central and west KY
Probabilities include
Low-Tornado (20% for 2 or more tornadoes)
High-Wind damage (80% for 10+ severe wind events)
Mod-Hail (30% for severe hail (at least 1″ dm)
Here in Louisville, we’ve had a few scenarios that had severe potential and they all fizzled. This one looks promising as well. But I wonder if the clouds will hamper the high instability in place? Anyway, looks like a widespread wind event possible.
Yep, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch now up for western KY and much of central KY. It includes a HIGH severe wind threat.
Very warm and juicy here in Nashville – some of my work colleagues chose to eat lunch inside for the ac, but I and a few others braved our outside picnic area. The wind is the remarkable thing, napkins kept wanting to blow away. Except for the heat/humidity, this strong wind seems more like spring than late June.
Storms in southern Indiana starting to look ugly and heading straight for central KY!
Todd, I hope you got some rain!!
We got .8 as of 8:30. With the .5 we got on Monday, my yard is very happy. π
I know it is not a supercell, but that one blob in southern indiana looks like a “giant supercell,” and its headed right down I-64 into Louisville and then Lexington.
I just walked outside my office in downtown Lexington, and it seems VERY unstable out there.
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the rest of us just issued effective until midnight.
That almost looks like a bow echo trying to form on the radio moving in towards Louisville. I am hoping these things stay North of Lawernceburg but am not holding my breath.
Northwest Lexington!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!
This is crazy…worst storm since the tornado.
Seemed pretty dark heading that way when I left work. Looks like the main stuff has so far missed the Richmond area.

It was a great storm, but it’s kind of easy to forget some storms……I can count several in my mind that were much worse than what we had earlier.
That was some monsoon in Lawrenceburg, KY. And highs forecast to go the 70’s this weekend! Woo-hoo. Keep bringing the rain, keep the ground moist, and keep the 90’s away.
Chris why no updates they are saying pretty in spots here in morgan co
Bad in spots sorry can’t typed
we missed the bad part of the storm here in the very southern part of Fayette Co. thank goodness. our chimney is just now being repaired from the storm on April 16, when it got struck by lightning. I am afraid that scaffolding on the back deck is going to attract more lightning!
Tornado Warning near Cape Girardeau MO, funnel cloud spotted. That storm is headed south-southeast towards far western KY.
Where did the twitter feed go that use to be on the right side bar of the web site? Do I need to access this another way? Sorry if this has been asked and answered. Little slow here.
the website is above on Mark’s comment to RhondaB, this is how I have been getting the twitter feed for a couple weeks
Thanks Sue.
Heaviest of the rain staying north and south of Frankfort area so far, 1.3 inches in my yard today not to shabby, some places in southern Indiana approaching 7 inches just today, WOW!
WOW! that is a lot of water.
