Good Sunday and Happy Groundhog Day. It’s the day the furry forecasters take center stage with talk of more winter or an early spring, but here at KWC, we just keep plowing ahead with whatever weather comes our way.
As we look into the next several days, it’s a taste of spring taking center stage, but this cannot hold as Old Man Winter looks to make another big return the following week and beyond.
Temps today reach the 60 degree mark in many areas then surge into the 60s for Monday on a strong southwest push of air. This is ahead of a weak cold front dropping in with cooler temps coming in from the north on Tuesday.
That boundary slowly retreats to the north on Wednesday as low pressure develops to our west. A few showers and thunderstorms show up Wednesday and there’s even the small chance for some frozen stuff in far northern Kentucky early in the day.
As the low bowls in on Thursday, rain and thunderstorms rumble through and some of the storms may be on the strong side. Here’s what all this looks like on the EURO…
The setup behind this is very active as winter starts to flex once again. The storm track slowly sinks farther south, putting our region in the zone for possible winter storms beginning in the second week of the month and likely into the second half of February.
The operational models are seeing these threats well, but we are obviously only looking for trends here.
The GFS…
The EURO…
The EURO continues to open up the floodgates to another brutal stretch of arctic cold for much of the nation…
The GFS is also jumping in with recent runs of the EURO in seeing the potential for stupid cold…
The change to winter during this second week of February is also showing up strongly on the various ensembles I look at. Check out the snowfall from the EURO Ensembles…
The GFS Ensembles snow map looks very similar…
The EURO weeklies go all the way through March 18 and continue with a strong winter signal…
I’ve made no bones about what I think happens in February and that’s for a lot of precipitation to roll through our region. From flooding rains to heavy snow, we are in for a lot of precipitation this month and into the first half of March, at least…
I’ll hit you up with another update later today. Have a great Sunday and take care.
Thanks for the update Chris. Have a Peaceful Sunday Everyone.
Well, it’s official… that nasty rodent forecaster up in Pennsylvania woke up this morning and saw his shadow, which portends 6 more weeks of winter.
It’s not the GFS, but in some years it’s just as accurate.
I don’t think we see too much more snow and it won’t get stupid cold.
