Good Sunday and welcome to the final day of June. We’re putting the wraps on a soggy month across the bluegrass state and that trend shows no signs of letting up. While I have dubbed this the “summer of storms”… the pattern needs a name. Since I am a kid at heart… let’s go with “Super Soaker.
That’s the original super soaker and it never seemed to run out of water. The same can be said with this pattern as rounds of showers and thunderstorms are loaded in the tank just waiting to drench their intended target. That target last night was the Kentucky Speedway. The NASCAR folks may have a few issues again today.
Showers and storms today will work in from the northwest to southeast and a few could be strong with heavy rainfall.
The flow will change a bit as we roll into Monday and that means more in the way of southern moisture being pulled into the region. That’s when the storms may be a little stronger and put down even more heavy rainfall. This pattern looks to hang tough all week long with temps in the upper 70s and low 80s for highs.
The GFS 2 week rainfall forecast continues to ramp up totals…
That’s more than 5″ of rain for much of the state during this time. While that is only to be used for Guidance… it’s easy to see we have a continuation of the super soaker pattern. This continues to have the look of a setup that ends up producing a decent summertime flash flood event.
What about the heat or lack thereof? The Day 10 European Model shows the heat ridge staying out west with another deep trough across eastern North America…
Have a great Sunday and take care.

chris bailey, not trying to get an argument going or be argumentive butwe are only 9 days in to summer if you go by the calendar……except for some scattered variety showers and thunder storms, the past week to 10 days have averaged in the mid 80s in many areas and the last time i checked this was normal………besides summer does not end until in sept. for many people so lets just enjoy the seasons as they come in and the weather will take care of it self.
Toney, CB is just stating the obvious CB is a trained met that holds a degree and is certified oh yes this is CB’s blog. Its obvious this summer so far is a whole lot different than what the Ohio Valley is use to. Temps have been running a few degrees below average but the precipitation values have been well above normal. This is a early spring time pattern we are in, were in July and we have a cut off low just sitting and spinning over the Ohio Valley/Great Lakes region. That in itself is bizarre for late June early July. You don’t see computer models this time of year spitting out high rain totals normally for the month of July unless there is a tropical system getting ready to possibly effect the Ohio Valley. Temperatures in the 90’s pretty much dominate our weather in July not rain and temps getting no higher than the upper 70’s and lower to middle 80’s. All CB is saying is this summer pattern so far has a different look and feel to what we are use to seeing for this time of year and I 100% agree.
i did not agree or disagree but my point is that in the past week only 2 days has had showers that only lasted at beast 30 minutes each day and the rest of the time the sun was out in its full glory but another point is that i agree that this summer is nothing like last summer but last summer wasn’t normal either to say the least with many days at 100 or higher and so far this summer is totally the opposite but you can’t take 9 days into a summer and say that this summer is going to be out of the ordinary…..i am in no way questioning chris expertise and for some reason every time i get on here some one wants to bring all this tech. junk up…….i did not say this was not cb’s blog but some of you on here act like chris is a god or something but people are entitled to his or her honest opinion…..all i said was let us enjoy each season for what it may bring us and as chris has said many times……what is normal around here any more? extreme is the normal around here now……..when it rains it does so in buckets and when it is hot it gets a 100 or better and when it is dry you can’t buy a drop of rain just like the cincy reds in base ball…….basically the same team as last year but a very different ball club with all the injuries and all and on paper they should be scoring runs by the buckets but they can’t buy a run right now and can barely have a win give to them….same as the weather…..the weather does not always do what the models suggest what they will do…..just my 2 cents worth but please don’t get on here and ramble like i am dumb or something……difference in being dumb and giving an honest opinion.
Last 10 days at my house only 2 days above 90 degrees and over 11 inches of rain. Not your typical summer and I’m all too happy about that. As for how long it’s been summer, those in the weather and climate business count summer as June, July and August.
11 inches WOW, that is a lot off water!
First half of June saw a half inch of rain. My rain gauge since the halfway point has given me over 11 inches. Everything looks like April, not the last day of June. Just as green and lush as you can imagine.
2 days of 30 minute rain? Do you live in the desert also?
June was wet in Frankfort especially the secoud half of it, between 5 and 6 inches with heavier amounts in some Franklin co. Locations !
Last summer we had less than one inch for June with temps jumping above 100, keep the good stuff comin Chris!
