Good Friday evening to one and all. I know it’s a Friday evening and a lot of people are out doing there thing to kick off a weekend. But, the blog rolls on with an update. This will be rather short and sweet as we look ahead to the next week and the potential that’s showing up.
The first situation to watch for will come Saturday night and Sunday with a shot of light snow and flurries along a clipper front. This front will usher in some much colder air behind it and set the stage for a touch of frozen precipitation for Monday as another system rolls in.
It appears we will see moisture returning northward into the region from the southwest as a potent system dives into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes from the northwest. There may be just enough cold air around to create a mix across parts of the state.
Above freezing temps would then work in for a period from late Monday into early Tuesday meaning light rain would be more likely. Much colder air dumps in from the northwest Tuesday with a switch back to snow likely from west to east. We really need to keep an eye on the possibility of a secondary low cranking up across the Carolinas Tuesday. That low would then ride northward into New England. If this low forms close enough to us… then a greater threat for snow would be in here later Tuesday into Wednesday morning. The JMA does show something like this…
That is something to be watched as we have nice piece of energy diving into the base of the trough early in the week. Let’s say that low develops too far east to give us system snow… snow showers and squalls would still be likely with a big shot of cold coming in during this time.
The end of next week into next weekend has a lot of potential to deliver cold and snow. There is likely to be a MAJOR push of arctic air diving southward into the eastern half of the country from Thursday into the weekend. Some of the models show this push being so strong that it crushes any storm trying to come from the southern stream. Other models like a fairly healthy winter storm to roll northeast out of Texas toward the Carolinas. This would be a favorable track for good snows around here. The same JMA model is hinting at this by Thursday…
The European Model is a bit slower… but has a heck of a threatening look to it…
As always… time will tell. I will have a full update later tonight so check back. Have a great evening and take care.

Certainly looks like the active pattern is set to continue! Thanks Chris for keeping us ahead of the curve.
Thanks Chris. Mitch, Rolo, Bubba, WXMAN, tornadolarkin, just how much potential do you see at the end of next week and could it finally be the “big one” we’ve been waiting for?
Thanks Chris! It is so awesome that you have this blog! You know more than any weather professional on any station. That’s for always looking ahead!
I don’t know what any of this means… but I like the word SNOW! So keep saying that and include the words “Lexington”, “huge storm” and “positive about this” and I’ll be a very happy person!!
Just rolled back into town from an awesome week of boarding at Snowshoe, WV! We were under a WSW from Tuesday morning until Thursday morning! I haven’t been able to find an official report for the mountain but ski patrol and the Snowcat operators measured just over 26″ in that period. There were powder drifts belly button high! Wednesday morning it was 4 degrees with 40-45 mph winds and heavy snow!!! It was AWESOME! Needless to say we crushed the snow!
i don’t quite know what all those models and numbers mean but you sound awfully serious about it. so i am going to trust you on this. i am loving all this snow but i am so broke i can’t pay attention!
Forget about the big one snow lovers..Nothing but cold air for the bluegrass..As always will be to the north or far east or carolinas for us to have any impact..Another wrap around that amounts to nothing but overtime for state workers and another wash job for the vehicle..
