Following Flakes and Bitterly Cold Wind Chills

Good Thursday, everyone. It’s a snowy start to the day across central and eastern Kentucky as arctic air continues to press in. This air brings below zero wind chills from time to time today and Friday, but we have a better pattern taking shape by the weekend.

Snow this morning is blanketing roads across in many areas so slow down and take it easy if you’re travelling. Snow showers and a few snow squalls kick in during the afternoon across the eastern half of the state. These may put down hit and run light accumulations and briefly reduce visibility.

The Winter Weather Advisories and Winter Storm Warnings should slowly go by the wayside as the day wears on. Here’s a look at the current map…

Wind chills this morning may drop as low as 0 to -10 across central and western Kentucky and they hang in the single digits for much of the day. Similar wind chills show up this evening into early Friday, making for a bitterly cold start to the day.

Conditions get better by the afternoon with temps reaching the mid and upper 20s. Those numbers climb into the 35–40-degree range Saturday before shooting into the 40s on Sunday.

Temps should hit 50 for a few days early next week before this pattern turns active before the week if over. That action comes as we go back to a big ridge up into Alaska, helping push a deep trough into the eastern half of the country to start March…

The EURO Weeklies are echoing my concerns for more winter weather for the first half of March as they see that deep trough into the eastern half of the country for the first week of the month…

That trough takes up much more of the country for the second week of March…

I do expect this pattern to snap into spring right after that and it may go toward one that turns pretty warm later in the month. This sets the stage for what I expect to be a very stormy spring that may very well put the severe weather bullseye right on top of our region. Ugh.

As usual, I leave you with your tracking tools including our Kentucky Weather Cams to watch the wild weather across entire region…

Enjoy the afternoon and take care.

I eagerly await the warmer temps. You gotta be insane to prefer this BS over sunshine and warmth.

Jeff when you live in Ky, it’s like a box of chocolate don’t know want you going to get in terms of weather wise.

Felt like my sinuses were fixing to explode this morning, which made sense since the barometer was sitting at 30.50 in/hg.
An uptick in severe weather would not surprise me in the least, especially since historically we have seen an increase in severe storm intensity in years where we have a transition from La Nina to ENSO Neutral taking place in spring. We had a taste just south of here in Simpson County on Saturday, when an F1 tornado touched down.

Joe, my Sinuses are horrible year round. I agree that we are in for an active Severe Weather Season. The temperature difference around the CONUS is very extreme.

There’s really Not much to look forward to Jeff, and I’m Not just talking about the Weather.

Thanks Chris. We have about 3 inches of Snow on the ground this morning, with the help of additional light Snow over night. As I was referring to March, where we may experience the weather of all 4 seasons. Makes me nervous, as Severe Weather season nears.

Enjoy the silence of a Snowy morning.

Looks like March will go in as lion and go out as a lion as well. Looking forward to the warmer temps.

It’s too bad that Spring Weather here in Kentucky doesn’t come gradually, as it does in the Pacific Northwest, where plant life doesn’t get damage by late freezes.

I will say this this winter season has been what winter is supposed to be here in ky since January. We all can complain but we haven’t experienced this type of prolong cold in 5 – 6 years.

  7. Schroeder

    I agree with that statement.

Thanks as always Chris! Not complaining, but just FYI you might want to check the “weather cam” links…I haven’t seen them load on this page in along time! I miss them.

Oh no Chris I don’t want to hear an active spring but I am sure you are right. I have went through a terrible ordeal and so have others a lot worse than me. Saturday night I had to leave with what I could grab at 1 am water coming in my downstairs The officer came to my door and said go now I barely made it driving in the median water all around and mudslides. No hotels slept in my car the first night. I am now back at my home starting clean up I am luckier then most I can live upstairs. The water was rising 3 feet an hour Chris or anyone have you ever seen it rising 3 feet an hour? I was stunned. The last check in my backyard you could hear trees breaking in the river scary.

I’ve been hoping you’d check in Crystal as I was worried about you. I’m so sorry you’ve been impacted by the flooding. I can’t imagine having to just grab and go like that. So glad you are ok.

        Thanks Dottie I appreciate it.
