Good Sunday, everyone. Our Derby Day was ugly and that ugly is back with us today and will hang tough for a few more days. A huge upper low is spinning across the region, bringing rounds of chilly showers and even the chance for a few cold air funnel clouds.
This pattern comes from the big block we saw setting up a few weeks out. This is what it looks like across North America today…
That is called an Omega Block because it resembles the Greek letter Omega…
Under that is a slow moving low pressure that spits out spiraling bands of showers with some embedded rumbles of thunder today and Monday with lingering action into Tuesday…
I mentioned a few days ago how these types of setups can deliver a few cold air funnel clouds right under the core of that upper low. The setup is one that spit out a few cold air funnels similar to the one in the pic from several years ago…
That was back in the days before social media and when you guys would load up picture submissions page. The OG KWC and WKYT blog readers will remember those days.
These cold air funnels are often harmless and rarely become a tornado.
Temps today won’t get out of the 50s for many with Monday being even chillier. The GFS is forecasting highs around 50…
Temps stay below normal through next week, but they won’t be like today and Monday.
The models are flipping around a bit on what happens with another upper low late next week into next weekend. The EURO and GFS keep the core of this to our south with just a few showers and storms around here…
EURO
GFS
Once again, temps run below normal as our wet and cool spring continues.
I leave you guys with the tools you need to track your Sunday spiraling showers and storms…
Have a great Sunday and take care.
Hot and dry summer to come.
Always does.

We had one here the cold funnel cloud’s Friday afternoon
Only saw one cold funnel cloud that touched down in my backyard and twisted four trees and destroyed a fence. An EF0 tornado. That was when I was living in Vanderburgh county, Indiana.
