Good Sunday, folks. The cold front of Saturday turned into our first underachiever of the summer for many areas. This system bucked the wet trend of the past several months across central and eastern Kentucky, but it still has quite a bit of juice left in the tank. That means showers and thunderstorms will be around today into Monday as we kick off a busy week.
The cold front is slowing down right on top of the state today and will be the focal point for rounds of showers and storms. Here’s the setup through Monday…
Any storm that goes up will feature ton of lightning to go along with very heavy rainfall. The heavy rains may lead to local high water issues for some areas.
A couple more fronts will make a run at us this week with a few more rounds of showers and storms. This active pattern will keep temps around normal or slightly below normal during the week.
All the models are now jumping on a huge push of cool air for next weekend. The European Model even takes on a winter “look” with a storm tracking across the Ohio Valley into the northeast…
That is pretty wild to see for the final weekend of July, but it fits what the weekly runs of the CFS have been showing for a while… cooler than normal for late July into early August. I posted some of those runs a week or two ago and it looks like they were spot on with this pattern.
Have a great Sunday and take care.
I am very much enjoying this pattern this summer. Especially in my area in Lex. Not too dry and not too wet (like in other localized places. ) Also cooler summer. Yesterday was a huge bust! It was bound to happen anyway. Though I have never seen a 70% chance of precipitation and it not raining a drop before. (as far as I recall)
Thank you Chris! I am also enjoying the cooler summer and don’t mind more of the same. 🙂
Thanks for all your hard work, even when the blog responders are so few during the warm months.
love the coolness of the summer and the wetness…….now if we somehow don’t turn out to have a abnormally dry fall and a warmer than average fall every thing will be ok……..as far as winter……..let us not even go there yet…….i am still trying to figure out what you meant in 1 of your earlier post this week about the pattern we are currently in and you gave a little hint and a wink of the eye on the smiley face…….something to think about…..make it a great sunday.
Not an underachiever in eastern Bourbon County. We just got 1.3 inches of rain in less than 30 minutes. No wind, no lightning, no thunder — just heavy, heavy rain.
Interesting video of flash floods in Utah.

That was very interesting. Don’t think I’d want to try to outrun that stuff though!
I love what the euro & .g.fs models show for next weekend. If it was January we would be preparing ourselves for a nice cold rain.
The Euro model is showing highs in the mid 60’s for us on Saturday!! Crazy but it shows heavy rain also. (Shows highs in Celsius)

Yesterday was an underachiever……At least for most of KY (not all)….It’s funny too because for whatever reason, looking at the radar now (Sunday Afternoon) it’s certainly not an underachiever in TN…….I guess it just wanted to be calm as it swept through our area…….
Got a nice shower this morning in east Frankfort about .30, much needed first rain here for a while!
Why’s the conveyor belt of rain set up in Tennessee?? Thought it had to go through us first??
Nothing in Richmond. No rain and no heat relief.
