Good Sunday everyone. Here is hoping this update finds you having a great weekend. Your friendly weather dude is trying to use the weekend to recharge the batteries a bit as we have had non stop action this winter. There is no rest for the weary as a winter storm will be causing lots of problems across much of the eastern half of the country and we will feel some of those impacts.

Before we break down the early week storm… the temps to start this Sunday are going to be frigid to say the least. Readings will be near 0 in many areas with some spots hitting numbers that start with a minus sign. This is a heck of a way to end a heck of a harsh winter weekend. Track those low temps here…

Low Temps

Mainly sunny skies will be with us today leading to highs rebounding into the 20s. Given the cold temps… very little snow melt will take place and that means a lot of school systems will likely be out for Monday. The question is… will some school systems miss the entire week? That is a real possibility as more snow will be falling across the region into the middle of the week.

This storm for early in the week is coming during the time frame we outlined nearly two weeks ago for something to crank up across the eastern half of the country. One low will be crossing the deep south Monday before turning up the east coast by Tuesday and Wednesday. This happens as another low forms across the Tennessee Valley and rides northeast through the Ohio Valley. The GFS is now seeing this setup and I actually like what the latest run is showing…

The above map shows the total liquid precipitation the GFS is cranking out through the middle of next week. It shows most of the state picking up better than .25″ of liquid precipitation.

The issue we will have to watch for is the exact track of the second low that rides through the region Monday night into Tuesday. The heaviest snows will likely fall just to the north of the actual low. As of now.. that low may end up being right on top of us meaning we get in on a moderate snowfall. Here is a map of this scenario…

Some Sunday thoughts on all this…

– Light snow is likely to push out of Tennessee into parts of southern and southeastern Kentucky early Monday. This can lay down an inch or two of snow. I am still unsure of how far north this stuff actually gets from the first storm.

– The southern storm will begin to throw moisture northwestward into the upper level low across the midwest by Monday night. That means light snow will break out across the entire area during this time.

– The second low riding through the eastern half of Kentucky Tuesday will carry a swath of snow with it that will take us into Tuesday night. Accumulations during this time will be on the order of 2″-4″. There may be an area of lower totals somewhere across the south thanks to the track of the low.

– As the low passes by to the northeast… wraparound snows and snow showers will kick in for late Tuesday night and Wednesday and this can lay down another 1″-3″ of snow if all goes as planned.

– I will have a first call map out later today as I want to get a better feel of the track of the second low. I am still not so sure the models are handling it properly.

If we are to look down the road… the pattern is loaded with more winter troubles. I see two or three more storms we will have to deal with over the next two weeks. The threat of a big arctic outbreak is still lying in wait for the middle and end of the month.

Check back for updates and a first call map later today. Have a great Sunday and take care.
