Good Sunday everyone. Here is hoping this update finds you having a great weekend. Your friendly weather dude is trying to use the weekend to recharge the batteries a bit as we have had non stop action this winter. There is no rest for the weary as a winter storm will be causing lots of problems across much of the eastern half of the country and we will feel some of those impacts.
Before we break down the early week storm… the temps to start this Sunday are going to be frigid to say the least. Readings will be near 0 in many areas with some spots hitting numbers that start with a minus sign. This is a heck of a way to end a heck of a harsh winter weekend. Track those low temps here…
Low Temps
Mainly sunny skies will be with us today leading to highs rebounding into the 20s. Given the cold temps… very little snow melt will take place and that means a lot of school systems will likely be out for Monday. The question is… will some school systems miss the entire week? That is a real possibility as more snow will be falling across the region into the middle of the week.
This storm for early in the week is coming during the time frame we outlined nearly two weeks ago for something to crank up across the eastern half of the country. One low will be crossing the deep south Monday before turning up the east coast by Tuesday and Wednesday. This happens as another low forms across the Tennessee Valley and rides northeast through the Ohio Valley. The GFS is now seeing this setup and I actually like what the latest run is showing…
The above map shows the total liquid precipitation the GFS is cranking out through the middle of next week. It shows most of the state picking up better than .25″ of liquid precipitation.
The issue we will have to watch for is the exact track of the second low that rides through the region Monday night into Tuesday. The heaviest snows will likely fall just to the north of the actual low. As of now.. that low may end up being right on top of us meaning we get in on a moderate snowfall. Here is a map of this scenario…
Some Sunday thoughts on all this…
– Light snow is likely to push out of Tennessee into parts of southern and southeastern Kentucky early Monday. This can lay down an inch or two of snow. I am still unsure of how far north this stuff actually gets from the first storm.
– The southern storm will begin to throw moisture northwestward into the upper level low across the midwest by Monday night. That means light snow will break out across the entire area during this time.
– The second low riding through the eastern half of Kentucky Tuesday will carry a swath of snow with it that will take us into Tuesday night. Accumulations during this time will be on the order of 2″-4″. There may be an area of lower totals somewhere across the south thanks to the track of the low.
– As the low passes by to the northeast… wraparound snows and snow showers will kick in for late Tuesday night and Wednesday and this can lay down another 1″-3″ of snow if all goes as planned.
– I will have a first call map out later today as I want to get a better feel of the track of the second low. I am still not so sure the models are handling it properly.
If we are to look down the road… the pattern is loaded with more winter troubles. I see two or three more storms we will have to deal with over the next two weeks. The threat of a big arctic outbreak is still lying in wait for the middle and end of the month.
Check back for updates and a first call map later today. Have a great Sunday and take care.

Thanks for the update Chris; is everything ok? Updates have been strangely lacking through the last 48 hours.
I will wait patiently for the next post! Thanks Chris.
Thank you, Chris! Please try to get some rest. You do so much for us, but we don’t want you to work too hard. Today is Sunday. Take it easy, my friend.
First tonight boys and girls !! Let it snow!! Rolo I need ponies!! And some slick roads for the week ahead!! CB you’re the man. Keep it up!!
Love the blog CB!! I follow every day. This is the first time I’ve commented and I’m excited about our weather. Rolo, I need some ponies and they need to be winners just like our weather report!! Looking forward to this week !!
I am only 13 miles from the Heavy Snow area…. I might drive to Tazewell, TN to see it. lol
I love how ky is sandwiched between heavy snow.
Hoping for a few snow days… Fingers are crossed 😀
Ok, i just finished looking at the 5:13am weather statement from lou NWS. I would like to know what exactly is the definition of “significant snow accumulations likely”? Reason being ia 2-4″ is NOT significant and barely warrants a WWA. When someone uses the word SIGNIFIGANT and then backs it up with LIKELY, i think most of us would say the definition would be 6″+ so strange to see the NWS be the aggressive one with the forecast and then see CB put out a map that makes it look like Kentucky gets split by both storms and get only minor accumulations. Yes, 2-4″ is rather minor in my eyes. I would love thoughts on all of this…the NWS, the map of CB, and my opinion on things lol.
talk about a bust on temps NWS had me forecasted for 11 according to Mesonet site we got down to -1
Exactly my point which is why it is so frustrating to get updates from Chris in such a piece-meal fashion; seriously, why isnt her more into this system?
MattNash …. Chris does this blog in his free time. Quit complaining if the posts aren’t enough for you. Go to your local weather people if you want more. But leave Chris alone. And Chris …. You Rock!!!
The NWS Sees The Low Of The Second System Going More South Than The Models Are Saying So Will Have To Keep An Eye On It.
As a snow lover this is a freakin nightmarish hell! How can it be that there is heavy snow for basically the whole eastern half of the country except a little pocket of flurries around Kentucky. How much do you want to bet that the next system that is coming next weekend will miss us if it is snow or hit us and will be a major ice storm.
Thanks CB. You have remained steadfast throughout and hopefully we will get more than light to moderate.
I would still like people’s opinion on what the definition of “significant” is and what it should be. We have all seen 2-4″ storm after storm rolling thru this winter. Its far from significant. I mean what would the NWS put down as the description if we were to get a foot of snow…VERY significant? Lol…just saying. Also, unless CB goes into full storm alert mode, this obviously isn’t going to be a big deal. I mean we are getting totals thrown at us by local mets of 2-4″ TOTAL. and that’s over a 48 hour period. That’s very very insignificant, don’t you think?? We all have seen it snow 4″ in 4 hours lol.
Chris has not backed off of his forecast all week long and is staying with some decent snows for KY. Local mets have wavered as the models change but not CB.
Gotta agree at this point. At some point last winter we had news of a ‘major’ winter storm and our snow totals were predicted to be 6 inches. We all looked at each other and said “That doesn’t sound too bad.” After a winter like last year’s 2-4 inches certainly didn’t seem significant.
First Pam, here is a napking to wipe the brown stuff off your face; second, I am not complaining, you will know when I am, I am stating that he hasnt upgrade to a mode that would enable him to provide a snowfall map; third, I work full-time and teach several courses at several different colleges, so, please dont lecture regarding indviduals that dont have time.
No doubt that 2-4 isn’t significant! One thing is for sure, CB isn’t in the THREAT MODE…so that is all that needs to be said!!!!
ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN Though–just look who won a playoff game..the SEAHAWKS…so maybe it will snow 6+ for CKY!!!!!!!!!
I think the reason he’s not putting more updates out there is ..there is nothing to update! Same old thing
Heavy to the north, heavy to the south. As usual ky is the HOLE in the middle of a big glazed sticky donut!!!
*napkin Mr. College Professor!
Thanks much for the weather news/info; I’d so much rather catch here than on television. As for some of the other comments, I have to give a shout-out giggle to Mr. Nash and then add (incredulously!!!), “Seriously?” O well, blog-response ‘forums’ provide us with the kind of anonymity to: 1) make responses like the first and then 2) to top it off with the response-second. M. Twain was right, the ‘acid’ does in fact has affect the subject/vessel (as is evident here). And too, I apologize for making my ‘giggle’ public; I should practice that that I thought appropriate for Mr. Nash, i.e., ‘tacere’!!!!!
Someone please moderate Matt Nash the whiner. Ungrateful and arrogant. Pam, give him some cheese for his whine. Poor guy has work and teach and he needs a snow map…why isn’t everyone catering to him. I’m getting sick and need to throw up. Thank you for the free service Chris. Matt or whoever you are, go read Bill Meck’s blog instead. We won’t miss you when your gone.
what you just typed is about the dumbest thing I have ever read — nothing but rambling!! and now everyone on this blog is just a little dumber for you wasting our time with this dribble!!! Please do us all a favor and stick to the TV!!
Matt–I’ve followed this blog for 3-4 yrs–I don’t remember seeing you around too much. Look, we try to keep it nice, don’t be rude, please.
Complaining about Chris not posting more is just whining…
He is just defending Chris, read the posts above edwardo or should I say MattNash.
Unfortunately I agree with CB’s map. If anyone ever wants to doubt that for the big snow systems Kentucky is the fence, segway, barrier, divider, seperator, etc, etc- Look at THIS map and say that.
Thirteen years and counting. The BSD is as strong as ever, but is more than generous to allow a big system to hit most of Kentucky if WAA and ice.
well I was spot on with my thoughts, look at this system to our SW a BIGG DADDY that is in the OLD SCHOOL position.
BUT it aint going hit us as usual.lol
the 2nd low will give northern part of state best shot at a couple inches of snow. but the bright side is alot of us already got some snow so cant be birching.
its just sad to have all ther cold air and STILL MISS the BIG STORM.
the BUBBA theory rings true with COLD= CLIPPER type snow and BIG SYSTEMS=WARM AIR
ty CHRIS BAILEY and u once again spot on as to not jump the GUN WITH A THREAT MODE.
feels good to not eat my words about the storm, heck im like a BLIND SQUACK and can also find a nut ever now n then.
Hey guys, He is getting exactly what he wants….attention. Quit giving it to him. A child throwing a tantrum will eventually stop if you ignore him. Thanks Chris for sticking to your guns and for taking you time to do the blog!
TBONE will post a winner by noon today at gulfstream for ya.
So true BubbaG, so true. It really frosts me when the deep south gets 4″ and we get a dusting.
Chris, get some rest, it sounds like you are going to need it. I can’t say I am happy with the heavy stuff going north and south of us, but, if we canget a decent one, if NOT the BIG one,Iwill take it. Just glad we are are actually getting some snowfall this winter!
Andy, our temp was forecast to be around 10, but we hit 2,(at my house).
Looking forward to the next update, Chris! Thanks!
CB can only call it like he sees it, but this map is so ironic, it is almost like CB posted it as a joke and then quickly post an “I gottcha’!” and the “real” map.
Look at the wide berth. It is almost like the snow systems are saying, “Whooa, watch out for Kentucky!”
Greek tragedy-style comic gold 😉 Hey, it could have been a heavy snow sandwich with a Kentucky “coating” in the middle 😉 ….. 🙁
Let’s hope the second low over-performs and KY gets blasted with it. If not, this “storm” is very disappointing. Can tell that Chris is underwhelmed by it…and GFS shows most of KY getting rain with next weekend’s storm, I think. 🙁
Snow Watch….Excellent Mississippi Streaming Cams
http://www.mstraffic.com/
Yes, I agree! Fatigue may be why CB wrote the words “light” and “moderate”, when he probably intended to write “super” and “heavy” for Kentucky instead. Obviously a map so ironic is simply too ironic.
Just joking, since it is what it is. CB’s quality and frequency of postings are impressive- even if not what folks may want to see.
Chris ROCKS, but heavy snow results for Kentucky are more like poorly timed polka music, or muzak.
I’m with you on this one. 2-4″ is what I got in my yard yesterday, and while its definitely enough to let you know its winter, it is most definitely not what I would call “significant”. It is amazing how it absolutely refuses to snow much more than that(4-6″ at best) in the LEX area. As usual, it seems the “significant” snow will go around us…
The first Low in East Texas is going to surprise alot of people in my humble opinion. I think it is going to ride much farther North than being expected.
Hello all 🙂 What time does the next models come out? Does anyone know?
I read everyday and love this FREE and Correct weather site !!!
Darth Bubba may be evil, but the Dark Side can not be denied. The map above is actually the battle map to rid the galaxy of the RKSL’s once and for all!!!!
Rebel Kentucky Snow Lovers
I like the optimism but that Low in Texas is going to hug the coast.
Well Bubba – Kentucky has always been a ‘border’ state! lol
I have a BS, MBA and a materials manager for a global company (very big), but that does not give me or any person a right to be condescending….. Are you from a liberal arts school? THAT explains everything! Nevermind’ 😉
There’s other on this blog that is capable of predicting the snow amounts..For instance there’s Rolo,he has predicted 2 inches,so there you have it..We now continue with our normal programing..
Not to beat a dead horse, but I am really curious to know what has happened between 1998 and now that has made it seemingly meteorologically IMPOSSIBLE for the central bluegrass around the LEX area to get in on a major snow? I mean, seriously! A MAJOR winter storm come our direction, and then SPLITS to go around us?! This phenomenon is nothing short of amazing!
This IS true and very sad for so many reasons….. Tito, throw me a tissue!
I picked the WRONG time to stop heavily drinking fermented beverages.

I like this analogy-I especially like glazed donuts which is why I’m so upset to be stuck in the middle!
I think Vinny wrote a song about that. Snow to the north of me, Blizzard to the south, here I am stuck in the middle again.
“individuals” Mr College Professor
Don’t be too proud to use your spell check. It is 2 boxes over from your submit button.
Chris, I hope you take some time to relax and spend time with your family this weekend. We appreciate how hard you work to give us updates, and keep us informed(all on your own time). Please tell your wife and daughter thank you from my family. We understand how important their support is to our blogging community! To the rest of my blogging buddies out there: Have a great snowy week! 🙂
That a boy!!
I’m not sure that we won’t get from 2-4″ in S.E. Ky, rolo. I’m next to the Pine Mountain ridgeline, and we get a little extra thanks to the upslope flow (which Chris is pretty good at predicting, BTW). We’ve got about 8″ on the ground now in Letcher Co. from the last system, so with this next system I’d be surprised if we don’t get up to four more by Wednesday afternoon.
But I’m right with you on saying that guy is from a liberal arts school, if you get my right leaning drift. Actually I’m not leaning right…I’m practically parallel to the ground on the right! 🙂
When it is all said and done, North Ky and south KY will get snow and Central KY will continue to be the median on the interstate of snow.
Question…. What was the setup for that snow storm back in 94′ that was suppose to lay down a dusting for
Louisville but instead gave us over a foot of snow?
Im just glad everyone agrees with the idea that 2-4″ is NOT significant! So, can anyone vouche for the NWS as to why they would use this terminology for describing the upcoming event? Soo misleading to ppl. Maybe they have stock in KROGER lol…
LOL. I shoulda stayed there yesterday. Tazewell had LOTS of snow yesterday, especially in the Hancock Cty part, up in the hills.
They are bracing for a big one, according to the old timers there.
I am new to this blog, and to Chris Bailey- sorry, never heard of him before now– but I have to say he is the only one that has anything right. You rock Mr Bailey! I am definately a fan.
I bet anybody I will see 6″+ from Mon through Wed…. TWC even has us on the 3-6″ line from today through Tue am. If they EVER put us in a scale double that and thats what we always get. Every storm has been a overachiever down here this winter.
Jim Caldwell also said 3-6″ and another 3-6″…. UPSLOPE……if your not a MET in this region you dont understand how it works. Jackson NWS is a joke. They will issue a Advisory after we have 6″ on the ground just like they did on Friday. LMAO..
Once last thing Channel 8 in Knoxville also has Middlesboro in the 3-6″ from tonight into Tue am. Thats 3 sites putting down 3-6″ for me till Tue am.
storm out of texas looks like its moving more north than east?
And for that matter…what about ’98 when they called for an inch and 3 days later ended up with a record 3day snowfall of 23″ in Louisville. What caused both of these storms to blow up over us?? And more importantly will we ever see that type of “caught with your pants down” system ever again? Lol…
Actually, the post wasn’t dumb at all. He is just saying that perhaps a little “tact” is needed when posting…
or if that is not possible, then perhaps silence is the best way to go.
Elitists know no party affiliation. Their party is the type they like to throw- for themselves 😉
Where there are parties there are usually sandwiches. Sadly, the snow sandwich that our chef CB has posted on the map menu is way too thick with the bread. WHERE’S THE BEEF?! 😉
TBONE here my two plays at
GULFSTREAM race 3 9 hoss on turf WP.
ARNOLD has this one ready.
race 8 STAKES RACE
1 hoss BATTLE OF HASTINGS!!! picks up best grass rider on circuit LEPAROUX.
E TENN/S TENN going to get HAMMERED as we watch in ANGER in SE KY.
TBONE GULFSTREAM
race 3 9 hoss WP
race 8 BATTLE OF HASTINGS the 1 horse.
Anytime Knoxville is expecting a big snow, we here in se KY get dumped on!! I say we get a good one in the se corner of KY!
You are now a full fledged Dark Side member :)BTW, I missed “median” in my stream of synonyms.
Good one, since that is what it looks like. I wonder if the gravitational force of the Death Star is what causes the “median” effect??
That’s exactly what it looks like to me not that I know anything.
Will there ever be a storm where we get at least a foot of snow?! I’m tired of these 1-3 or 2-4 inch snow storms.
BubbaG, I’m thinking that CB might just be playing it down because he still thinks the directions can shift the last minute on this thing.
I’m not getting a sense of CB giving up on this storm, besides, he usually is upfront with us if that happens.
And you are so right…he has to get tired with all the updates, work, family, and late night postings.
We are lucky to have a free weather site like this…most people would make us pay for it.
c-BIV:
The word “Significant” is subjective. While you may consider 2-4″ as NOT significant, I can assure you that a fair number of folks do consider that a significant amount. Considering that as little as 1″ on roadways causes havoc across the state…I don’t believe that it is misleading…but you are certainly entitled to your opinion.
Just signing in to get the email notifications…..Thanks

To my knowledge with the ’99 storm the Low went over southern half of Ky over the apps…It then stalled just off the coast for a couple days sending copius amounts of precip back over the apps into the Ohio Valley…Kinda of like lake effect up north….Build a huge igloo that storm…
OK, here’s the plan…
The Northern storm & the Southern storm to to go to Match.com and hook up…
Then they need to meet in Kentucky where love is a blomin’ and just explode…
On a serious note: The storm for the 15th is starting to look like a major ice storm… I hope I’m wrong, (and prolly am), but that’s what it looks like to me, as of now…
T-Bone, If Rolo gives you a pony, bet it! And if it’s a baby race, double up!!!
Ugh. I guess that’s why they call it the “snowdome”. I always hate that image of us surrounded by mounds and mounds of snow :/
Sounds like he’s hooked you up before. I’ve followed his picks and weather thoughts the last couple years. I’ll come up with some good stuff before the winter is out!!
Rolo is barely capable of spelling his own name.
So….after waiting for the huge storm, it looks like ALL of Ky is in the ‘mediocre snow strip’…2’-4’…zzzzzzzz……still waiting for the big one. Maybe the sled comes out though on this one.
I am no expert, but doesn’t it look like the moisture has a more northern path. Loop this radar and take a look yourself. http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/index_loop.php
Someone help me understand this.
I also know nothing:) I think the main low is on track, though-what is confusing (to me, the uneducated snow lover who is always and ever hopeful) is what LOOKS like a low around Dallas. Then again, perhaps it’s a different kind of low that I know nothing of. I’m still refreshing, hoping always to see that we are getting ‘the mother of them all’ storms…I think my screen will wear out however, before that happens:)
It sure looks that way to me, too….
Does anyone have any idea when they may begin to issue WWA or WSW? Thanks for the updates CB!!!
Rain! That was supposed to be snow earlier!!! Talk about a disapointing ‘snow’ week…
na u look at loop and u can see the low as it moves due east. the precip in front is coming north as it rotates but not far enough. u can watch the loop and see it not getting much futher north on a time lapse. southern middleeast tenn is as far north as any moisture to amount to much will get IMO.
we should get some flurries and very light snow in faar S KY.
Think of that system and the one that will come from the north as two big semi trucks driving on a big air-highway. They will follow their due course until they hit the Kentucky Big Snow Median.
This will then result in the southern system to go more due east and then the likewise for the northern system.
Seriously.
Anybody know why I can post from my cell phone but not my laptop? My laptop continues to say my session has timed out everytime I try to post from it. Thanks.
New NAM has me in the 5-6″…. Love it!
your an absolute idiot! you dont know jack about the weather i have noticed
Jeff, what’s your opinion on the system? Give it and be done with it. Everyones opinion is welcome here on this blog and has been since the days of wkyt blog- Rolo always gives his opinion and does sway from time to time but, will admit when his wrong and its fun to read. So give your opinion and agree to disagree but Don’t come on here and call people idiots because of his or her opinion. That would be idiotic…IMO
Unfortunately it almost always “looks” like its heading in a direction more favorable with each of these. I think its just called being hopeful and seeing what we want to, lol. Who knows maybe it will throw more farther north, but we do it every time so, we’ll see soon enough I guess, haha.
IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN MR.NASH, YOU STARTED THIS WHOLE PIECE- MEAL POST STUFF SO QUIT BASHING OTHER PEOPLE FOR THEIR RUDE COMMENTS WHEN IN FACT YOU ARE THE RUDE 1. I AM FROM WAYNE,WVA AND CHRIS DOES HAVE BANS FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE THE POST, THEN STAY OFF HERE.
On your laptop, type in Kyweathercenter.com instead of Kentuckyweathercenter.com… That should do the trick. My computer did the same. Hope that helps.
Can you post the new NAM snow map please? It would be much appreciated! 🙂
I COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER MY SELF, HARDBALL. WE SEEM TO HAVE SOME VERY RUDE PEOPLE ON HERE THIS MORNING. SOME PEOPLE MUST HAVE STAYED UP TOO LATE LAST NIGHT WAITING FOR THE NEW MODEL RUNS. BOTTOM LINE IS, IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO READ THE RADARS AND THE WEATHER MODELS, THEN QUIT BASHING OTHER PEOPLE FOR THEIR OPINION. OPINIONS ARE LIKE BUTT HOLES, EVERY ONE HAS 1 UNLESS OF COURSE YOU WANT TO ACT LIKE 1, A BUTT HOLE THAT IS.
Jesus christ man, calm down, its only weather..No sense in being rude..
Sorry…I meant ’98
I’ve been reading this blog since it started but have never posted before. I love what Chris does and appreciate his skill in forecasting and explaining to us amateurs the mechanics behind the weather. I live in Louisville.
As with most blogs, there are always haters and incredibly rude people, as we’ve seen here today. I don’t appreciate readers calling someone an idiot because he gives an opinion. Nor do I appreciate bashing of Chris for not posting enough. He doesn’t really have to post at all. And accusing someone of being a brown-noser? That is unacceptable. I agree with others who have said, if you don’t like it, go elsewhere. Or remain silent.
That is all.
That said… bring on the snow!
Take a look at Henry Margusity snow map on his weather blog over at Accuweather really sucks to be in KY. I just really cant hardly believe it
Two observations:
1. CB must REALLY be tired, since if he were not, he would have quickly noticed the irony of map and NOT posted it 😉 You can not can get any more ironic… or in my case, moronic 🙂
2. People are being rude to day because the map struck a proverbial nerve. SNOW RAAAAGE!
WOW Jeff…Seems this is the first blog you have made on this post. ROLO has been on this one numerous times. The only idiot on here right now is the one calling ROLO the idiot. By the way I second what ROLO said. SKY will see dusting out of southern storm.
JEFF TAKE YOU NEGATIVE COMMENTS TO SOME OTHER BLOG…ROLO do you still have that generator…Going to need it next weekend!!!!
Ok…how do we get a storm to stall off the coast and throw moisture all the way back to us?? Lol…that seems almost meteorologically impossible!
Snow lovers behold, I love how we say the snow dome word alot on here, but truth is Frankfort & most of central KY have already met the normal yearly ave for the entire winter! Yes, we have not had an old schooler yet, but 17in in Frankfort with 2-4 inches we are talking 20-21 inches with lots of winter left.
And the Empire is feeding off of the anger.
I think Chris is taking a break but at the same time I think he is delaying because neither he or anyone is sure where the 2 lows converge. My New Years slogan will be: Expect nothing, Hope for everything
Chris does this out of enjoyment and dedication to his followers. He gets pennies from 1 advertiser in return. If you don’t like the blog, move on. There are many other places to get weather on the net. We have what could be a major storm brewing, and the next headline is going to reinterate the site banning policy.
Appreciate this site a lot. I hit this site more than any other on the Internet. I’ve hooked dozens of people onto this site and they rely on it much more now than the local guys in Lexington since it is far more accurate with forecasts. Thanks a million Chris!
wtf kinda question is that? LOL this blog never lacks jack!
I agree…i think the map Chris posted really struck a nerve. It almost summed up what we go through living in kentucky on an annual winter basis. It doesn’t seem fair, does it? Lol…
Lastest models have dropped the low 50 miles to south from previous run!
BubbaG, I’m thinking that CB might just be playing it down because he still
thinks the directions can shift the last minute on this thing.
I’m not getting a sense of CB giving up on this storm,
besides, he usually is upfront with us if that happens.
And you are so right…he has to get tired with all the updates,
work, family, and late night postings.
We are lucky to have a free weather site like this…
most people would make us pay for it.
its T SHIRT TIIIIIIIIME!!!
Thanks Chris for all you do!!! I love this blog and look forward to your updates. You truly put a lot of time into letting us know about upcoming storms. We do appreciate you and your time to keep us informed. Weather.com has already put us under a weather alert for here in Manchester. I am still hoping these 2 storms merge together right over Ky and give us a foot or more of snow. Chris I look forward to your update and hope the maps are showing BIG snow for Ky. Thanks
Maybe they’re thinking in terms of impact on traffic or school schedules? At any rate it makes it sound worse than it is.
Thanks Chris you work so hard and it is a shame a few doesn’t appreciate you, most of our blog family know how hard you work with your real job and what you do for us and I know most here do appreciate you.I have even got my Dentist reading LOL.
Rolo what is the song for the day and what are we eating is it a Chili day?
Thing is it was never coined “snow dome”, but was “big snow dome”. For a few years, systems missed us so much, even CB admitted surprise. The result was our expectations went down, so the “big” was removed through lowered expectations.
We have had enough snows to where we are full circle back to the original “BIG snow dome” premise. Doubters- just look at that map 😉
Darth Bubba reports a lot of converters to the Dark Side and asks people to please take a number and wait your turn for conversion 😉
How about “Stuck in the middle with you”?
Which low are you talking about…all I can do is assume you mean the 2nd low with your exclamation point and not the southern low.
thought y’all would like this little bit of info…http://www.wkyt.com/blogs/easternkentuckyweather/A_First_Call_113153344.html
CBiv…I will look into my archives…I believe it came from “Lord Belski”. I was also amazed by that storm and the scenario that played out…I will reply back as soon as I find it…
http://www.wkyt.com/blogs/easternkentuckyweather/A_First_Call_113153344.html…………thought y’all would like to see this litta bitta info. 😛
“I got, big snow to the north of me, big snow to the south”
“But here I am, stuck in the middle with you”
🙂
We can have fun. As mentioned earlier, CB calls them as he sees them. Just in this case, wish he was not correct so much 🙁 😉 🙂
EXACTLY!
I guess a lot of us who grew up during the 70’s remember all of the big snows seems it was winter from November to March with plenty of big snows which hit KY. What has changed over the years? I don’t know but it really makes you think. I have a pretty good hunch if we live long enough we will see the return of the big snows it’s just a matter of time.
From the NWS in Louisville
…SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE FOR THE UPCOMING WORK
WEEK ACROSS SOUTHERN INDIANA AND CENTRAL KENTUCKY…
THE LATEST WEATHER FORECASTS INDICATE AN INCREASING LIKELIHOOD
THAT A PAIR OF WEATHER SYSTEMS WILL BRING ACCUMULATING SNOWS TO
PARTS OF THE OHIO VALLEY BEGINNING MONDAY.
THE FIRST WEATHER SYSTEM IS FORECAST TO MOVE FROM THE SOUTHERN
PLAINS INTO THE SOUTHEASTERN STATES TONIGHT. AS THIS SYSTEM HEADS
EAST ACROSS THE DEEP SOUTH…MOISTURE WILL SPREAD NORTHWARD INTO
PORTIONS OF SOUTHERN KENTUCKY LATE TONIGHT INTO MONDAY RESULTING IN
LIGHT SNOW DEVELOPMENT AND LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS. THE MOST SNOWFALL
SHOULD BE ON THE KENTUCKY…TENNESSEE BORDER WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR
AROUND 2 INCHES.
A SECOND SYSTEM WILL MOVE IN FROM THE WEST MONDAY NIGHT AND CAUSE

My hometown in Western NC 🙁
Notice the red 8.8 inch forecast in the county that is shaped like a triangle…They went years without a decent snowfall. I think this is their 2nd this year. They have already had a seven inch snow in Dec. Also heavy snow being reported in Dallas due to evap cooling.

I totally don’t get this!!!!! Looking at the radar it looks like the P E R F E C T setup for a classic winter storm for us……Cold air in place……Storm in Texas (where the old school storms always came from) and forecasting them back in the day didn’t seem as challenging as it does thirty years later…….
This is exactly how we always got our big snows growing up in western NC in the 70’s 80’s…….I wasn’t living in KY then but hearing people talk they always got them here back then too……
Maybe it’s just a fluke. I don’t know…
It seems strange for me to be living over 300 miles north of my hometown yet they are getting more “big” snows than I am.
That being said, for seasonal snow I think we are a little ahead of them (LOL)…..But perhaps not after this storm…….We will see how much we get.
That reminds me of a story called the puupy who lost it’s way and the industrial revolution.
I don’t look at the models, I go on what the rest of you say. But based on the lunch time runs, was the moisture supposed to fill in so rapidly between the 2 systems? Looking at the accuweather radar it appears that there is significant moisture building up with KY in its sights. The southern storm also looks to be moving more north than it was supposed to according to the radar. Thoughts?
So funny to listen to the Debbie Downers and the people who change their minds every 3 minutes on here. Snow is coming folks, plenty of it. Get your eggs and bread, relax. Breathe. 🙂
We are literally caught between two storms. Frustrating for forecasters – especially for our western counties – easier as you go north and south. Just not out storm(s) New HPC maps prove the point.

Hi Crystal and Rolo!! My son wants me to fix red beans and rice! Chili sounds better to me though!!
I agree! This thing could blow up right on top of KY! It has happened before, Feb 98:)
That same map has Texas in the zero probability chances and the entire ne corner including dallas tx is receiving heavy snow. Just because a map says something doesn’t always mean that’s what will happen. That’s why im ready for nowcasting right now lol! With 2 storms so potent and close together, there’s always room for a few surprises to come our way. =-)
I was thinking the same thing. I have been looking at several models and none of them seemed to be showing the moisture from the southern stream extending up through Oklahoma like it is. I have a hard time believing that Kentucky gets missed by that snow filling in out in the plains.
If this snow comes to central ky. when might it start? Tonight I pray. I really need a couple of snow days…
We are due… We didn’t even receive that much here in our neck of the woods Fri night.
Rolo Yep 7 degree is tshirt weather.
I am guessing that Chris is getting a little rest, and maybe pondering over the maps and runs before he posts again. And whatever he says, whether you like it or not, is what we will have to live with. Either way, we have still already had more snow already this winter than we got for the past three…so I am not going to complain.
(Still, Darth Bubba, I won’t say that I wouldn’t like to see the “granddaddy of them all” of a snowstorm around here, because I would.) 😉
Chris will post ehwn he is ready to…period.
Just talked to parents who live in southern Tennessee. Winter storm warning tonight.
Richmond Road/Man O War got just under five inches of snow this weekend. We finally beat CB for a change:)
I think CB is itching to pull the trigger. Everything would have to go perfect for us to NOT get anything significant.
I am so itching for an update !!!
Just excited as a kid in a candy store…
has anybody see the latest radar from the southeast accuweather blog, it looks like southern kentucky is gonna get smack tonight and tomorrow.
Wonder what John Belski bread index would be for this storm?? Also got a question…. with these storms converging close together does this lessen the chance for more accumulation? or say the storms spread apart a day further would we have a chance for more snow? or does that matter at all?
Actually that is incorrect. To be fair to the HPC – that map DOES include Texas. You are looking at a new map – that does not start until tonight. The HPC nailed the NE Texas snow and it was included in their morning forecast. You can view that map here

…and both semis will have dumped their load of snow before hitting I75 in central Kentucky!
Looks to me like the back edge of the snow in Oklahoma and Texas might impact the southern 2/3rds of the state. Storm is a slow mover though.
that worked, thanks
Joy, I couldn’t agree with you more. I can’t wait till Chris gives us some news. I am hoping it is good SNOW news.I hope he doesn’t make us wait much longer.Chris I know you are resting, but please just a quick update like winter storm warning. Thanks, your the best. Clay still has snow on the ground not muching melting here. I have a feeling we will not be in school this week. I can’t help it I LOVE SNOW.
