Good Tuesday everyone. Old man winter is ready to return to the region this week with a harsh period of winter likely ahead of us for the middle and end of January. This means the blog is getting back into a mode where you guys will get multiple updates each day.
Let’s jump into it.
The short term forecast is pretty easy with quiet weather as we will have a partly sunny sky out there today. There is a weak front blowing across the region and this will kick the winds up a bit. Highs will spike into the low 40s for most ahead of the front. Colder air will move in for Wednesday as highs return to the low and mid 30s.
We have been keeping an eye on a fast moving system that will be crossing the deep south later Wednesday into Wednesday night. Some models have been throwing up just enough moisture into the state to create a swath of light snow. The NAM has been the most aggressive of late and continues to show a light snowfall for some…
My suspicion is the NAM is a bit too snowy for this period as a lot of the moisture will stay to our south. Still… we will see what future model runs show later today.
A series of “mini clippers” will be diving in here from Thursday night through Friday night with streaks of light snow. This will likely lead to a light snowfall for much of the region. Here is how the Canadian Model looks…
That looks like a general 1″-3″ of snow to me.
A taste of arctic air will then move in for the weekend. It is from this point the models are all over the place with how to handle the storm for early next week. Many are now ejecting the storm out quicker for Sunday into Monday. I will get into all that and the the rest of what appears to be a memorable January with posts later today.
For those of you who use Facebook… I have to give a big shoutout to a group of Pike County teachers who created a group dedicated to your friendly weather dude. This is their brain child…
The blog as long been a hit with teachers across the state who want their snow days… and I appreciate what the fine folks in Pike County are doing. I have to take issue with the title “World’s Greatest Weatherman” as it is not accurate. I actually came in second place to this guy…
More updates will be coming your way later today so check back. Have a great Tuesday and take care.
first?
Chris you have us spoiled; congrats on the stuff but dissappointed that there was not any information, especially when we have all the stuff on the horizon, just saying
Cris Bailey – The cock roach of the mainstream weather man’s nightmare! Running around and shaking them up!
Chris, I will take you overthe cockroach ANY day! 😉 You rock! Can’t wait to see what your thoughts are on the weekend and beyond.
By the way, you know what we do with cockroaches don’t you? We step on them!
Have a GREAT day everyone!
how big could this snow be coming sunday into monday?? any ideas?
Talk about a teaser. I want to hear about what’s going on next week, not the dusting coming on Thursday night/Friday morning. haha. J/K CB, just curious about what is happening next week
I hope this “weather” guy in florida isn’t posting on our blog….to funny
somebody needs to take that poor soul..down to the farm for a while..
The gfs sure is laying a good snowcover all the way into dixie in the coming weeks…could be interesting to say the least…
and on another note: an old folk tale i’ve been putting to the test this winter: If its clear early with frost, then cloudcover moves in by dawn..snow/ice in the near future…well its happened once so far this season. AND this morning a cloud cover over frosty conditions…sooo, could that be the warning for the sneaky little snow for wednesday?? I guess we’ll see…
i 1 more time from the town of wayne, wva. it is about 10;05am and the sun is shining brightly and the temp is in the low 30s.looks like it is going to be a nice early winter day, 1 of the calmer days leading up to the wilder days to come. i love this weather blog. maybe the reason that chris did not put out a winter forecast this year was because of all the uncertainties with it. he admitted back in the fall that this winter was 1 of the more challenging winters that he had seen i quite a while. thanks for your time. good to hear from all the bloggers as always.
That is the funniest thing I have witnessed lately!!! Thanks for sharing. P.S. The teachers in Corbin love you too!!
i agree it is funny, but i have seen it before.
If the fella is that scared by cockroaches, he is definitely working in the wrong state.
The teachers in Clark County also think you’re the greatest, Chris. Thanks for all you do.
Teachers at Henry Clay in Lexington read your posts too, Chris! We talk about all of the possibilities between classes while on hall duty!
12Z NAM goes BAM. Digs the trough in slightly deeper and produces a slightly stronger low than GFS. Could have a decent little snowfall out of this Friday system…
De Ja Vu
How ’bout that next update there ol’ Bailey Boy!?
I sniff another 3-6″ fluffy puff!!! coming down the pike…and no im not talking about marshmallow creme..although that sure sounds pretty good for someone who is trying to get back on a diet…:(
I noticed the 12z gfs is spitting out a bit of snow now for wed-thur. as well over southern ky..while the nam is being bullish on this as well…
I am a BloG GroOpiE!!! All the teachers at my school come to me and ask, “What is he saying now?” “Is it going to snow?” “When is it coming?” “Are we going to be out tomorrow?” WE LOVE THE BLOG TOO!!!
I do this in Perry County too! Love to read the blog Chris!
I think I’m a blog junkie…I can’t wait to spread the newest updates to my fellow teachers! Keep it up Chris!
