Good evening everyone. We are wrapping up the first Monday of the new year on a chilly and pleasant note as we await the arrival of a harsh period of wintry weather for much of January. That period will begin later this week and weekend before really kicking into high gear next week.
I have mentioned our southern counties have a shot at some white stuff Wednesday night and Thursday morning from a southern stream system rolling eastward. The latest run of the NAM is really hitting this possibility as it puts down some snow…
The Canadian Model is showing something similar, but I am not sold on moisture making it this far north. We shall see.
More thoughts…
– Clipper mania kicks off Thursday night through Saturday. This should bring several snow streaks our way from the northwest.
– Accumulating snows will be likely during the above mentioned time frame.
– A blast of arctic air will swing in for the weekend to give us a small taste of what is ahead.
– Early next week will feature a storm system rolling out of the southwest toward the mid atlantic states giving us the threat for snow.
– a MAJOR blast of arctic air is set to invade the country by the end of next week. Once this sets in… it will be in no hurry to leave as January continues to show signs of becoming a classic!
Have a great evening and take care.

First? I really love snow, but that arctic cold can stay away. Thanks Chris for your hard work and dedication to this blog. It is much appreciated.
OK….Bloggers: for your stomach’s sake and for posterity and tales to tell grandchildren…with the impending snow of epic proportions: what are the BEST recipes to wile away the time and gorge on during the snow and cold! This is our weather-wise cooking challenge!
Note to two folks:
MarkLex, I agree- I was referring to January and not the next 12 years 😉 Just suggesting central KY will be more likely to get the lesser of the snow results, due to the typical pattern of the precipitation flow (snow), so far this winter.
MikeM: How well does that snow blade thingy work? Can you buy the local or are they mail order only?
Is the blade made of metal or plastic? Sturdy?
It will not help for the slope part of my driveway, but would be handy for the other 60% of it 🙂
Do you get the feeling that the blog is like a primer button on a lawn mower or weed eater…lol..(push 3 times before starting)…I think we’re at the end of the priming and mother nature is about to PULL THE CRANK!!!…LOL…:)
Global Warming is what’s making it cold now:

Try this, take 1 can of carnation evap milk, chill to almost frozen, pour in a mixing bowel and whip it, add 2 tsp of vanilla, and 1 1/4 cup of sugar. mix well then hand spoon in lots of SNOW. You’ll love it. You’ll be waiting on the next snow for more!!
Tim…lol…we have a Honda(push/trimmer)…Prime ONCE and “there she GOES!’…:)
I can’t WAIT til we get the BLIZZARD!!! 😉 Here in Nelson Co…(“Land O’Ice..?!)… 🙂
LOL…no offense, but I don’t think I’d want to mix anything in a bowel.
Jackson Co. lurker here…I think I will need a snowmobile to get me to Barbourville Friday for a mandatory meeting. I wish it was summertime again! Never will I ever gripe over it being 90 degrees and sunny!
Evening fellow weather lovers, and drive-bys. Hopeyour first Monday of the new year has gone by quietly and serenely. Mine was pretty good.
Chris, gotta make a trip to Lexington on Saturday to pick out bridesmaid dresses….Is it going to be a problem?
(Wondering if I need to have a back up plan in place.)
As far as cranking up the snow train…sounds like it is building up steam to leave the station….got my ticket when she goes. Looking forward to maybe seeing some more snow, but I have to say that the arctic cold is not on my favorites list…especially when I have to be out in it…but I will just layer up more and look like Ralphies little brother from “A Christmas Story.” ‘I can’t ut my arms down,’ 🙂 Have a good night, all!
You know, global warming is the obvious cause of everything. (sarcasm)
yeah i had the mixing of the bowels last week. no thanks. i don’t want to do that again.
i am a dummy when it comes to reading the models. can someone explain the significance of the mbs? i know that with hurricanes the lower the mbs the stronger the storm. (or do i have that bassakwards) is it the opposite in winter?
lets try that again.

Just for the record nasa reported that 2010 was the warmest year since they had been keeping records.
Of which significant data was based on questionable measuring location results. NASA and the UN have already been outed with the bogus data. 😉
Questionable? By whom? Rightwing morons? Please don’t start this crap again. Some of the top wingers (Huckabee, Caribou Barbie, Gingrich) admitted G. Warming ON TAPE and in VIDEOS, and now they are trying to backtrack after Ping Off the baggers. They forget about those things called recorders LOL :-
We can have a record year or years of warming (Which we have had), and if we get 2 weeks of snows we get a bunch of halfwit simpletons screaming “What global warming?” on Fox “news”. Look at the long term averages, smart folks, not what Granny’s thermometer said last Tuesday night at 3 AM. :0
00z gfs had some major problems with the storm early next week that fit right into the model’s bias ecmwf is the way to go once again in the extended.
I agree. The earth has been warming for over 10,000 years….at one point it was completely frozen (snowball earth). Glad we are smarter than everyone else on here. I bet that they listen to Fat Al and go buy themselves an electric car with pedals, while he indoctrinates their children, and exacerbates the already carbon choked atmosphere. These simple minded rednecks won’t know what hit em when Al’s cow fart tax is implemented. Between carbon credits and cow farts they are gonna have their mines shut down and their farming taxed to death, and they are just too blind to see it coming.
You folks and your blind agenda are not backed by any sound regression model as far as any extrapolation that derives a warming solution. Not to mention key data points are biased.
You folks talk smack but that is all it is. You all are funny.
