Good Saturday everyone and Happy New Year. I wish nothing but the best for each of you as we begin 2011. What a way to ring in a brand spanking new year as showers and thunderstorms are working through today. This follows a little rest from the cold and snow over the past few days. I hope you enjoyed it as a harsh stretch of winter weather is ahead for much of January.
We will break that down here in a bit. In the short term… it’s soggy! A strong cold front is blowing across the state today with widespread rain and some embedded thunderstorms. The storms early today will be NOTHING like what areas to our south and west had to deal with Friday. A rash of deadly tornadoes ravaged much of Missouri, Arkansas and Mississippi to end the year.
Today’s rains will be heavy at times with many areas pushing an inch or better of rainfall before all is said and done. This can cause some local high water issues and you can track the action here…
The rains will wind down later today from west to east as colder air moves in. There could be a period of snow flurries later tonight in the east as the cold air swoops in. Highs Sunday will generally run in the 30s under partly sunny skies.
I have been priming you guys for what I think is ahead of us in January… a very harsh stretch of winter. The things I am seeing can become memorable for much of the country as all signs are pointing toward some bitter shots of arctic air to go along with many snow and storm threats.
I have talked about how the models are going to struggle beyond 4 or 5 days and that has certainly been the case with recent runs. The European Model has been especially bad of late as energy back across the southwestern states really screws up what the model shows because it has no idea how to handle it. It’s not like the other models are going to be much better with details. That said… we can get some general ideas of what all is going on next week and beyond.
First up should be a clipper heading across the Great Lakes Tuesday and Tuesday night. Most of the moisture will pass us by to the north, but the Canadian and GFS Ensembles are showing the chance for a little light snow around here.
GFS Ensembles
That should be a decent shot of cold coming in for Wednesday.
There is then agreement from the models with a more potent clipper diving in from the northwest Thursday or Friday. This would have a better shot at some snow around here as it will have more moisture to work with and has a big blast of arctic air behind it for next weekend. The question with this is… will some southern stream energy eject out of the southwest to team up with this push of arctic air? That is possible… but we should see the streams stay just separate enough. The Canadian Model is a close call…
This is the beginning of the period we outlined for the possibility of a big winter storm somewhere across the eastern US. I don’t think what the above maps show would be the only chance of that happening as energy hanging back in the southwest may not fully eject out until sometime next weekend or into early the following week.
As far as the arctic express is concerned… it is about to leave the station and head south for a prolonged visit to much of the U.S. of A. The signals have been showing up for a while now for a MAJOR blast of cold coming our way for mid month. Now the computer models are picking up on the overall idea of this happening. If you wanna see what arctic high pressure looks like… check out just how high the pressures are on the Canadian Model for Monday, January 10th…
Yes that is a 1071mb arctic high showing up in northwestern Canada with a 1053mb high across the western states. Again… I am showing you this as an illustration of where the pattern is going for the middle and end of the month in terms of arctic air. Timing and details will change… but the overall theme will remain the same. Now… you wanna see what temps a MAJOR arctic high pressure can bring to the states? Here is a look at the GFS surface temps for the 16th day of January…
WOW!!! That is showing -50 air temps across the northern rockies and plains states with sub 0 air surging our way. Again… I am only showing that to give you an idea of what the pattern is capable of in the coming weeks.
It should be fun to see how the month plays out.
Happy New Year and take care.

BRING IT ON!!!! I hope we have plenty of snow during this Artic Breakout and not just cold air with no snow!!
Happy New Year Chris!! Thanks for keeping us updated!! Super excited about a return to winter weather!! Bring on the snow, and LOTS of it!
NWS in Jackson just put this out:
HEAVY RAINFALL AND LOCALIZED GUSTY WINDS THIS MORNING…
AN AREA OF MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD EAST KENTUCKY BETWEEN 3 AM AND 7 AM THIS MORNING IN ADVANCE OF A COLD FRONT. RAINFALL RATES WILL APPROACH ONE-HALF INCH PER HOUR IN THE HEAVIEST SHOWERS. SUCH RAINFALL RATES MAY BRING ABOUT SOME MINOR FLOODING OF LOW LYING AREAS AND POOR DRAINING URBAN AREAS… ESPECIALLY IF THE HEAVIEST SHOWERS PASS REPEATEDLY OVER THE SAME LOCATION. THE HEAVIEST RAIN SHOULD FALL ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE CUMBERLAND AND HAL ROGERS PARKWAYS… WHERE BETWEEN ONE AND ONE AND HALF INCHES OF RAIN IS EXPECTED BY THE TIME THE RAIN ENDS LATER TODAY.
IN ADDITION TO THE RAINFALL… STRONG WINDS JUST ABOVE THE GROUND WILL SURFACE FROM TIME TO TIME THROUGH THE MORNING PRODUCING LOCALIZED WIND GUSTS UP TO 35 MPH.
THE COLD FRONT WILL SWEEP ACROSS THE AREA DURING THE EARLY AFTERNOON HOURS BRINGING AN END TO THE HEAVY RAINFALL THREAT AND GUSTY WINDS.
Good Morning to one and all, and a Happy New Year and most of all Thank you CB. Well here in Jeffersonville Ky, the winds have been whipping since about 12:30 last night. We have had heavy rain a time or 2 but now it is calming a bit. We are in the dry slot, soon to get back in to the thick of things. Temp, 53 winds in the 20 MPH range and about 1/2 inch of rain. Take care all.
Morning all. Hope your New Year celebrations were safe. Radar looks like this will be a good day to stay in and watch football.
About the upcoming pattern…WOW, Chris! Looks like I may need to double up on the socks and long johns for sure!
But if it means some more good snow, I say bring it! Have a GREAT day, everyone!
Happy New Year Chris and fellow bloggers! I enjoyed the nice sunny warm day yesterday for a change. Got out and raked up some leftover leaves that had been sitting under the snow.Looks like Jan. may be interesting. I would like to see an old schooler before the winter is over. Again, Happy New Year everyone.
I am really not a fan of that kind of cold. π
Happy New Year to all!!
Thank you for a forecast for the entire week. So helpful.
I wonder what the underground creatures do when it is so cold and rainy. Does it reach to them or are they protected as if in a cave…
I recently wrote a blog about ants on my blog. Feel free to check it out at HelenBukulmez.com
Have a great day!

I love snow as much as the next person, I can deal with temps. in the twenties but the bitter cold is for igloo dwellers. Please pass the seal at dinner. FORGET IT!
Is that band of snow going to make it into Eastern Ky??
Happy New Year Chris and bloggers. You guys are a wealth of information. THANKS

happy new year folks. revised my winter forecast to a cold jan and normal feb. let it snow! also I saw on the tweets someone not named chris forecasted 50’s for the cats bowl in AL on the 8th. not going to happen 30’s are more likely. with 20’s here on Friday.
Good afternoon, all. been a great day of football, to go along with the rain we have been getting. I think the front has passed us now…temp is down to 45 here at the Hargis ranch. SEC has done much better today…now if Florida can just hold off Penn State….
(No, I am not a florida fan, but I AM anSEC team supporter in the bowl games, except for Arkansas….(sorry hog fans, can’t stand Petrino.)
Well lets go have some chili, andwatch some more football!
Looking forward to the next update, Chris! Thanks for all you do!
Happy New Year, again, everyone!
Mitch, when do you think the snow will start to pick back up like it did during Dec?
BMX wants to be optimistic…
“Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 47.”
Guess we’ll see. When Chris lays the smack down like he did today on good ‘ol Larry, I pay attention! π
upper 30’s seems more likely.
could be in the next week from one system late wednesday and a round of snow squalls friday.
the 00z gfs is about as extreme for cold and snow as I’ve seen in quite some time and I’ve seen a lot of model runs.
You are getting me excited now. lol
Yeah, that’s pretty cold. Will have to see how that verifies in a few weeks. I see that the 01/18Z and 02/00Z finally picked up on the mid-week system. While we’re not all that cold by that time…a few inches certainly look possible.
I really appreciate your professional approach. These are pieces of very useful information that will be of great use for me in future. Thanks for it.
