Good evening, everyone. Record/near record highs and 40mph+ winds were the story of the day across Kentucky as we await the dramatic change ahead this weekend. That change looks to be the opening act to much bigger winter impacts starting in the week ahead.

The next round of widespread rains roll in from the southwest tonight into Saturday with the heaviest rains across central and eastern Kentucky. Winds will be very gusty once again as cold air slams in from the west late Saturday and Saturday night. That will be followed by an upper level disturbance set to kick off periods of light snow and flurries for Sunday.

You can see all of this on the Short Range Canadian from tonight through Sunday evening…

Wind chills crash into the low and mid teens by Sunday morning as our weather does an abrupt turnaround…

From this point, Old Man Winter tries to flex across the eastern half of the country next week. We have two systems of interest as the jet stream takes huge dips into the country. The first arrives late Tuesday into Wednesday with likely a little rain ahead of it and some snow as the cold crashes in. There’s the chance we develop a stronger low with this.

The one that follows this up by late next week is the one that has the room to develop into a big winter storm for the eastern US.

The models all have something with both of these, but they vary on how big to play then from run to run. That’s always the case, so don’t get caught up on any one run of any one model.

The Canadian is probably the attention getting of the day with the second system. This animation goes from late Tuesday through next weekend…

The Euro is right behind it in terms of intensity, but it’s just a little east…

The GFS is seeing both systems…

The main update comes your way later tonight.  I’ll also have a few updates on my Meteorologist Chris Bailey Facebook Page . Until then, here are all the storm tracking tools you need to start the week…
