10pm Update
Good evening and Merry Christmas everyone. Evening radar trends suggest areas along and south of Interstate 64 will see the heaviest snows overnight and Christmas Morning. A general 1″-4″ will be possible in this area. Farther north… the snows will be lighter with an inch or two at best.
Roads will become snow covered overnight into Christmas Morning so be careful if you are out traveling.
The snow will taper off Christmas afternoon before widespread snow showers and squalls will develop quickly Christmas night into Sunday and Sunday night with more accumulations likely. Southeastern Ky will likely see significant totals from this.
I will have a brief update later tonight. Take care.
Previous Update
Good Friday afternoon and Merry Christmas Eve. Snow is moving into western Kentucky this afternoon and will overspread the rest of the state through the evening. It looks like we will get some bands of moderate to occasionally heavy snow that can lay down some quick accumulations.
The forecast I have out appears to be in good shape right now and I will let it ride. That and the fact I don’t have time on this busy travel day to make a new map.
A few thoughts…
– Snow will continue to develop into the evening and roads will become snow covered not long after the snow sets in where you live.
– Snowfall from Tonight through Christmas day will average 1″-4″ for the entire region.
– The strong upper level low will cause widespread snows to develop late Christmas Day and continue through Sunday into early Monday. Additional accumulations will be likely.
– Parts of eastern and southeastern Ky will get hammered by the late Christmas through Monday snows. Totals in this area will average 4″-8″ with higher amounts likely in some spots. I look for Winter Storm Warnings to be issued for several counties.

Take care.

WE WILL HOWEVER ISSUE A
WINTER STORM WATCH FOR OUR FOUR VIRGINIA BORDER COUNTIES FOR
SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT. THESE HIGHER TERRAIN AREAS
SHOULD REALLY DO WELL IN THE UPSLOPE EVENT…WITH 5 TO 10 INCHES OF
SNOW A GOOD BET BY MONDAY MORNING. IN FACT…THE 12Z NAM IS PRINTING
OUT ALMOST 1/2 INCH OF QPF IN THE 24 HOUR PERIOD ENDING 06Z MONDAY ON
BLACK MOUNTAIN. IF THAT HAPPENS…MORE THAN 10 INCHES OF FLUFF WILL
FALL ON FAVORED NORTHWEST SLOPES.
thanks for your concern rolo

Snowing in east Louisville
Yes this is true light snow has developed in Louisville
winter storm watches at the same time for se ky a winter weather adv is in effect. not bad, haven’t seen that anytime recently.
I go back to the old way of snow forecasting. I have had snow birds in my backyard for almost 2 weeks, but I noticed that today, not a one in sight. About 4:00 I looked out and they were back, about 15 or so. As the old timers would say, “Here comes the snow!”
Hope everyone has a great Christmas Eve and Christmas day tomorrow! I did want to share a picture I captured on my phone a little while ago. This is from the Ashland weathercam, unaltered in any way. What is that in the sky? Is it Santa scouting the area before the big night? Who knows? Merry Christmas!
http://yfrog.com/h2cgfej
Snow filling in nicely, all is well. Let ‘er RIP BABY!! Merry Christmas to all, and good sledding!!
I for one will fill better when I see those holes in the radar close up! Snow Dome flash backs!
Thanks Chris!
I really enjoy the live cams as well as the forecast. 🙂

Winter Storm Watch for me. A total of 5-11″ of snow from tonight through Monday morning.
Shane,
How long does the drive take you? I know by the bird it really isn’t that far but in a car a totally different story.
Dry slots winning around the LOU-Frankfort area. Radar having a hard time filling in!
SNOW DOME! UGGG! GRINCH!
We are EXCITED down this way. Possible 5-11″ by Monday morning!

It has started snowing in Northern Rowan County/Morehead area…coming down at a pretty good clip with some large flakes..guess it’s time to drive my truck to the bottom of my “mountain” so I can get to parents tomorrow morning! 🙂 Hope everyone stays safe…noticed on my weather radio..NWS won’t really say how much more snow between Saturday and Monday there will be..just “significant accumulations”…hmm.

SNOW! It’s snowing in Paducah! Went to church at 4pm, doing nothing; came out an hour later and ground white, roads covered, snowing so hard it looks foggy. It was a slow drive back home because the visibility was so low. All the roads had been pre-treated, but snowing so hard that they are snow covered anyway. Doesn’t look to last that long here, but it sure is pretty with a wet snow hanging on every branch and twig. Merry Christmas!
Nuttin’ yet in Richmond, but snowing in Morehead…. Last checked, that is east of Richmond, so we should be first. Strange, but not surprising 😉
nothing in Rockcastle at the moment. Not even flurries
Frankfort will probably be on the 1to2 in. range with this storm, very unfriendly radar so far. Has not started snowing yet & a big dry slot showing up in SouthW Indiana.
Beckley to London via interstate is right around 5 hours depending on traffic and assuming 2 stops during the trip.
BUBBA temps are questionablke as far as bad travel but a few inches possible, but nothing dangerous thats for sure. another basically nothing. im glad got to go get my liquior in morning and other things. MOONSHINEAND XMAS.. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
the sunday stuff will be the best snow for SE KY. tomm nothing majior.
Another bust… STILL NOT FREAKING SNOWING IN LOUISVILLE! From the radar, I doubt it will snow past midnight. If you never want to see a real snow event again, move to Louisville!
Snowing fast and furious here in Owensboro. Snowing about 45 minutes and already have an inch on the ground.
Anybody south of a e-town-danville-jackson line are gonna be the winners for tonight’s portion of snow. That is one heavy ban of snow that will last for awhile. Anybody north of that includ louisville, frankfort and lexington will be lucky to get an inch.
Looks like your about to be hit by the dry slot. i hope that band to your northwest west continues to fill in.
Nice snow shower in southwest louisville now. Beginnng to stick on pavement.
Dare I say it…an inch or less in Central KY if the radar returns look like they hold true?
Snowing fast and furious here in Owensboro. Snowing about 45 minutes and already have an inch on the ground.
Would really rather you didn’t!
nothing here in versailles dare i say-“the snow dome is in full effect”
Moderate snow in lou. at this time. I hope the dry slot will fill before it reaches the area. i cannot understand what is your complain in cen. ky the radar returns look better their, than in lou. & sou. in
Radar looks great, but air still too dry to see any precip…not sure if the column will saturate in time to bring any more than a dusting
Typical Snowdome over Lexington about to breakdown, but agree with Chris 1 inch for Lexington.
I hope the atmosphere becomes moist in time. Looks like you have a real good chance to pick up a lot snow coming from the energy out of Memphis
Snowing in Frankfort (light). Late start, dry slot holding tough west of Louisville. 🙁
NO SNOW IN BURGIN YET…..I WAS SO HOPEING FOR AT LEAST 3 INCHES BEFORE MORNING…..LET IT SNOW PLEASE
I wondering about that too..looks like the NWS map needs to be flipped to me 2-4 in south central KY, 1-2 in Central kY
Yep, the heavier band is setting up across south central KY. By tomorrow morning 1-3 in the north-central with 2-4 in the south. Getting good reports of 1″/hr down there.
Are you on duty MJ? Is there going to be a forecast grid update?
Here in French Lick, Indiana I measured 1″ or so about an hour ago. The snow has tapered to flurries for now, but looks like snow is filling back in nicely 🙂 I have an aunt in Bowling Green and one in Owensboro hope they can make it tomorrow!
I don’t know about the rest of town, but it is snowing in Gardenside, Lexington.
I just took a quick glimpse at the early 0z nam projections. It appears w. ky could be the winner for the next 3to6 hours.
impressive webcam shot out of bowling green!!! and radar is lit up in southern ky…:)
Mj what about Morgan co will we get some white stuff????????
Dry slot filling in nicely just west of Louisville
To Chris, Rolo, Andy, Tim, Char, Patty, Coffeelady, ALL my blogging friends…
Merry Christmas and a SAFE holiday season to ALL!
Getting snow now in Bardstown…:)…!!!
May all of you have a wonderful holiday and much LOVE to each of you! 🙂
The Bowling Green webcam shot just keeps getting more impressive by the hour!
When the snow began here in Lawrenceburg around 9:05 it came down fast and hasn’t stopped since! Very fast falling snow for sure!
When the snow began here it Lawrenceburg around 9 p.m. it began fast and has gained even more momentum. This is a fast falling snow!
Ye of little faith. Snowing now in Versailles. Chris is looking at you guys and laughing.
Nope…but have been in touch with the office this evening to see what reports we were getting.
smowing hard about 15 miles north of somerset
Started @ 8 eastern and over an inch now in Rineyville (Hardin co )
Snow really coming down good in SE Lexington. Already coating the ground. The radar looks as if it’s filling in good.
heavy powdery snow with a nice coating allready down here by the KY river on the fayette side!!!
Snowing in Somerset. Started about half an hour ago adn the ground is already white, and the roads are getting
snow covered. It is absolutely beautiful! Big flakes and snowing heavily! Merry Christmas!
First flakes in Winchester about a half an hour ago, and now it’s coming down pretty hard, already coating the roads.
Just started snow here in London at 10pm. Very light as of now.
Heading home to Winchester from Lex and I64 is snow covered and snowing hard. We are going about 30 mph! BTW, wife is driving while I type!
Snowing in northern Madison County now.
This is a perfect snow…..not too much to impede travel, but just enough to be really pretty. Currier and Ives-esque.
Just to let everyone know, I’ll be camping in Berea tonight, in case you were wondering why your silly ‘radar’ has been lying to you for hours now.
Heavy fluffy snow in Rickcastle now, starting to get a coating
People saying that based on current apparent radar results, an inch or less when it JUST started in this area are jumping to conclusions more quicker than the National Enquirer 😉
Merry Christmas MikeM!!! I saw Santa in a house in stonegate!!! Tell your kids they better be in bed!! We see him at that house with all the lights and things in the yard every year!
JUST A FEW LIGHT FLURRIES AS OF NOW HERE IN HUEYSVILLE ( FLOYD CO.) BUR IT LOOKS LIKE IT WON’T BE LONG TILL WE GET IN ON THE GOOD STUFF:)
Really snowing hard here in Morehead, I love it!!!
Big fat fluffy flurries starting to fall in northern Clay County. Try saying that 10 times real fast! LOL
Chris-
I live in Bardstown (city-right behind the Justice Center(Courthouse)-snow started falling moderately heavy here about 45 min’s ago…our neighborhood roads aren’t even snow-covered, but already, cops have been here in front of my house working ‘slide-off’s”..!? It’s reaaallly snowing out there! 🙂
Heavy snow has been falling in Pulaski Co. the last 30min. Probably a 1/2″ already. Wrecks being reported all over the county.
It came fast and hard here inside the circle in Lex. Easily a half inch, maybe more, in the last 20 minutes or so. Still coming down hard. Tates Creek Road is snow covered and two wheel drivers are having a hard time.
It just started snowing in Grayson. It would be nice to get in on some of the heavier snows through tomorrow morning. Merry Christmas to all and be safe.
Looking at the radar north of the river, it appears that we will have another light to moderate band coming thru, after that band I do not see any organizing brands forming at this time moving south.
Being snow in London for about 40 minutes ground is covered and you can hardly see.
Well got a nice snow cove here in rockcastle, not sure the exact total but 1/2 to a inch, truth probably in the middle. Still heavy snow a falling, not bad for only a hours worth.
Tim says they have moderate snow in Bimble
Merry Christmas to you Patty as well as all the bloggers out in blogland. I’ve been fighting with the kids all night trying to get them in bed. They are so excited and I can remember it as a child That I was too. We’ve got almost an inch already out at our house and I’m hoping for two or three
more.
Snowing hard in Northern Rowan County/Morehead area…probably 1/2 inch to an inch ..which isn’t bad since it started once, stopped and has only been snowing for about 45 minutes…a friend down in Franklin said they had almost 3 inches..then it stopped. I told him there were some “dry slots” but they would fill in, hope that was correct haha..
We have two inches on the ground and counting….still snowing hard here.
Our roads our covered. I measured the show and it was at 3/4 inch and coming down pretty good here in London. So happy to see the white stuff for Christmas. Hope it’s enough to try out my son’s new sled.
Merry Christmas to you as well and to all the bloggers in blogland. Just got the kids in bad. I can remember like it was yesterday going to bed Christmas Eve waiting for Santa Claus. Got an inch here so far in south Woodford County. Hoping for 3 more.
Just over a half inch now on the ground here in Lily. Snow is coming down pretty hard. I’d say just under an inch per hour rate right now.
about an inch in Versailles so far and still snowing. bowling green got 3 inches official. their banding with this system makes for forecast nightmare. Radar shows Shelby county has seen little while hardin county has been in heavy snow for the past hour. chris had the best forecast strategy going in a general range. merry Christmas folks.
Little over a inch here in Rockcastle
Meanwhile…Northern Kentucky snow lovers are sure to be disappointed. Nothing has accumulated outside my abode in Campbell County and one TV met says now to expect a dusting at best tonight.
I see the NWS has the Bowling Green area getting 2-4 and this area 1-3! Has the storm shifted? That’s the opposite totals of Chris snowfall map!
Been snowing about an hour now. Decent coating so far and still coming down.
Weatherunderground radar detecting storms across SE KY? Just an error or false detection, or an indication of some heavy bursts of snow, and/or maybe right and picking up on thundersnow????
http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID=JKL&lat=0&lon=0&label=you&type=N0R&zoommode=pan&map.x=400&map.y=240¢erx=400¢ery=240&prevzoom=zoom&num=6&delay=50&scale=1&showlabels=1&smooth=0&noclutter=0&showstorms=99&rainsnow=0&lightning=0
just some moderate to heavy snow in parts of Knox nobody has said anything about Thunder and Lightening yet
11:39 pm, radar looks impressive, but still nothing falling as of now
Just like Rolo, the NWS changes it mind frequently.
Moderate snow and half inch in north Richmond.
Started snowing about twenty minutes ago in the Cawood area of Harlan Co. Accumulating quickly on my deck. Merry Christmas!!
Enjoying some warm sunshine in Florida right now while I am visiting family for Christmas. Hoping to come back to a wonderful white covering upon our return on Tuesday. Hopefully all works out!
Light snow just beginning to come down
Snowing hard in Whitesburg for about 30 min. now. The ground is already covered. Big fluffy flakes.
Snow falling in Ashland, Ky. 27* Just a light covering as of now. Traveled from Pineville, Ky this evening and just beat the snow to Ashvegas! Hope everyone has a very White Merry Christmas!!
Was our last white Christmas 17 years ago? Not sure. Probably varies in the state.
scott…I have cousins in Rineyville!? 🙂 Where in R-Ville are you??! (I know the area well!)
Still snowing here in Bardstown…already about an inch since around 10:30…
ha rub it in Mike, lol. Enjoy the weather
About 1.5in here in East Frankfort, Dry slotted again currently. Maybe 1 more inch if those bands hold together west of us. Officially a White Christmas! YES! 🙂
My parents are traveling this evening. Wondering how the Mt. Parkway is as far as snow. Last I heard they were in Campton.
i havent been on all day, so i feel like i need to comment!
Snow is really coming down in East Point, in Johnson County. The snow is fine, but there’s a lot of it. Looks beautiful.
Looking at the radar…looks sucky….lmao!!!- At first it looked like S. IN was going to get it all, now everyone in the Bluegrass/E. KY looks like the ‘snow-love’ is going on…you can look @ the radar and see how this great big HOLE forms right over Nelson County…(sux the Biggin’….)
Oh, well… 🙁
Merry Christmas to ALL!:)
Merry Christmas everyone.Chris you and Santa delivered. At 5 minutes after 12 snow started coming down in Pikeville at a very good pace.Pouring down now.We just got home.
Snow here in Floyd is coming down at a good clip now, easily 1/4 to 1/2 inch in last hour, roads are completely snow covered
Began snowing in Corbin at about 10:30 pm…. Snow has been heavy (I live on the Knox county side) has sounded like we had thunder a few minutes ago… Is that possible? We have a inch and 1/2 on the ground…. Roads all snow covered including the main roads… Looks like a wonderful snowfall… Thank you Chris for doing such a wonderful job on this blog and Merry Christmas to u and everyone… Your comments are much appreciated….
This snow round is such an UNFREAKINGBELIEVABLE BUST for Louisville… AGAIN! Snow isn’t even reaching the ground, even with a few limited radar returns around Louisville ALL NIGHT LONG! Must be the type of verga with complete saturation. May all your snowmen be yellow…
Merry Christmas Rolo and also to the legend as you call him Chris Bailey Merry Christmas.I promise I only had 1 Margarita Lol but it was good what the Dr ordered and with the snow flying I could not be happier.
Latest Santa sightings.

Snowing hard in Johnson County and it looks like we have about an inch and a half…..Merry Christmas….I’m no longer dreaming of a white Christmas…its reality 🙂
Moderate snow in Lou at the moment. My neighborhood str. still black. Road crews appear be ahead of the snow. Looking at the radar out west looks like another batch forming in the St.lou area. Hope the line stays together as it moves southeast. Also the line does not look as impressive as the line coming thur at the moment.
merry christmas everyone…lovin’ the snow!!!
Moisture out west is starting to fall apart unless there is a major change. Lou will end up with a semi-white xmas.
Wayne I hope you get in on some snow.I know how it feels not to.Merry Christmas to you.
close to 3 inches here in south lex!!
Moderate to heavy snow here in Leslie County! On top of the 3 inches we received this morning!
You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your blog. Thanks
