Good Sunday, everyone. When I was mentioning a day or two back about the warm and muggy air this time of year being a red flag for something big happening… I didn’t realize how big that would be. It was historic across parts of central Kentucky. Record rainfall and severe flooding dominated the weather picture from Saturday afternoon into last night.
Record rains fell in Lexington, Frankfort and Louisville. Louisville has taken it on the chin with nearly 6″ of rain falling. Saturday was the 3rd wettest day on record for Louisville. Records go back to 1871. Wow! As you can imagine… severe flooding has been reported.
The problem is… it’s not over. We have a powerful cold front moving across the state today and this will fire up more storms and flooding rains. Those who missed out on Saturday will get smacked around a bit today.
Here’s a breakdown…
– A wall of heavy rain and thunderstorms will work eastward across the state today. This may decrease a bit around the middle of the day, but will then pick back up in coverage and intensity in the afternoon and evening.
– Additional rainfall of 1″-2″ will be likely for many areas. Locally heavier amounts will be likely for areas with the strongest storms. Speaking of… a few of the storms may contain high winds. That’s something to watch… especially in the north and east.
– Temps today may hit 80 in the east before the storms get in. Farther west… temps may hit the 50s behind the front.
– Winds will crank as the cold front moves through as cold air moves in. Yes… the air coming in behind this is cold. 850mb temps are forecast to drop to 1c by Monday. That means highs tomorrow may not get out of the mid and upper 50s. Lingering showers will be possible.
– 30s will be possible Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
Here are the tracking toys of the day…
I will have updates as needed. Have a great day and take care.

Louisville Jefferson county wide is in bad shape some neighborhoods have been flash flooded twice in one day. Got to my subdivision in Valley Station which is southern Jefferson County and it look like a lake my jaw dropped I had to wait one hour to let the water recede just to get home. At the deepest point the water was almost up to my knees were talking feet of water at the height of the flash flooding. Several water rescues have taken place in Louisville. Once I saw the water up to my bottom door of my car that was it for me put in reverse and waited it out incredible stuff. Unfortunately more heavy rain moving in so a repeat looks likely all tributaries drain ditches are completely swollen in Louisville. I kid you not streets turned into lakes!!!
If this next wave of heavy rain holds together and it looks like it will there is a distinct possibility that Louisville will go under a Flood Emergency.
Overnight rains did not disappoint…
Rainfall total at my house in Valley Station for the last 19 hours –
5.50″
Large shield of moderate rain moving in from the west. Looks like another inch before noon.
Are you anywhere near Alanadale over there in Valley Station? I was curious how that section of the area was looking. Hopefully, you aren’t getting flooded at your home.
I live in Prairie Village about a mile north of the Gene Snyder at Stonestreet.
Pond Creek was at full capacity at 8:30 this morning
I have not ventured toward Valley Downs yet. I’m familiar with the area. Many yards are generally subjected to poor drainage during heavy rain events like this and some residents worry about the large drainage ditch. I’m sure at the height of the storm late last night, there were some worried residents.
I’ll be dealing with water issues in my basement. It’s not as bad as I thought it would be after receiving 6+” in 24 hours.
Thanks
I know the subdivisions off Valley Station road last night were just absolutely blitz with flooding. Some neighborhoods turn into lakes during the height of the flash flooding
I used to teach at Valley Station High School. A lot of low, flat areas — prone to flooding… Good luck!
I guess the storm system must have changed dramatically somehow, as I can’t seem to find a mention from the last couple days about the potential for record rain fall. People who know what to expect from a 1″+ rainfall in their local areas were sort of surprised to receive 3-6+”.
Louisville area people, did they warn you all up there before it started flooding last night?
Yes we warned to a point but no met locally in Louisville did not foresee 7 inches falling 1-3 was forecast. Problem was the storms kept training over the county for hours with rainfall rates at 1-2 inches per hour with the heavier cells.
Louisville Int’l has received about 7″ during the past 24 hours when the rain started yesterday morning about this time.
Hopefully, radar trends will continue to show weakening. I’m expecting another 0.16 to 0.33″ for the rest of the day unless we get more convective storms along the front, which NWS says could happen in Louisville (best chance east).
Doesn’t appear were going to get much at all here in southeast Ky.
Couldnt be any more boring
How bad was the winter of 1962?
Chris, how was the 1962 winter around here?
