Good Saturday, weather peeps. We have another strong cold front crossing the commonwealth of Kentucky today. This will bring about some nasty weather with showers and chilly temps. The nasty will turn to frosty by Sunday morning as we start out much colder than normal pattern.
Temps ahead of today’s showers will spike into the mid and upper 50s central and low 60s in the east. Those numbers will tank as the rain moves in as readings drop into the upper 40s and low 50s this afternoon. Winds will be gusty and that will make it feel even colder.
Here’s regional radar to track the showers…
This is a system that has been underplayed by the models. Just ask parts of Kansas about that. It dumped several inches of wet snow there on Friday and busted many a forecast. That won’t happen here, but it shows you how the models are missing out on the depth of the cold and how the pattern is indeed looking more like one from winter.
The rain clears this evening and the clouds will quickly follow. That sets the stage for widespread frost overnight into early Sunday morning. Lows in the low and middle 30s will do that.
This is when we turn our attention toward the next system arriving early Tuesday. This is another cold front that has even colder air coming in behind it. A band of cold showers will blow through here early in the day…
That… is… a… cold… look. Yet another system will dive into the region on Wednesday. The models have been going back and forth on how strong this system will be. The European Model digs it in and blows it up to our east…
While that produces a lot of very cold showers… it also shows the potential for some wet snowflakes mixing in. The snowfall forecast from that same run of the European Model shows some in the highest mountains of southeastern Kentucky…
We will have to wait and see how this all plays out. Could some areas see the first flakes of the season? It’s a possibility and something to track in the coming days.
Have a great day and take care.

Morning, Chris. Thanks for the update. Brrr…looks like I am going to need to drag pout some cold weather clothes before I had intended to. I(I am talking sweaters and such.) But after all, we are getting into the last half of October. And we have seen snow flurries on Halloween here before. thanks for all you do, Chris. Have a GREAT Saturday, everyone.
Winter is coming.
This is a raw Saturday. 52 and raining in Lawrenceburg. Feels like a typical winter day–cold rain!
We had quite a bit of frost on the rooftops Friday morning in my area (Northern KY) even though it only fell to around 40. I’ll actually be glad when it finally frosts and freezes. I need the lawn to stop growing! 😉
46 degrees and rain, wow this is December weather!
It is raw out there. Temp dropped to 48 here in Lawerenceburg during the rain–back up to 50 now that the rain is slacking off. 55 would be a push today.
Wonder if a freeze is now possible tonight since these temps are under performing today?
As other have mentioned, a raw/chilly/wet day. The cold rain showers have ended in Nashville, albeit the dull overcast stubbornly remains.
NWS Nashville has a Frost Advisory up for all its service area effective tonight/Sunday morning.
The first cold rain of the season! With many more 40 degree rain events this winter to go!
Think Snow 😉
I end up thinking snow way too much and I’m depressed all winter. So if I think rain and keep my expectations low, I will never be disappointed. 😀
Um, reverse psychology doesn’t work in this case. I’ve tried it!
Thanks Chris! Enjoy the weekend.
I’m surprised there is not a frost advisory for tonight. Not even 6:00, clearing skies, and 49 degrees. Not gonna take much to get down into the Mid 30’s.
NWS offices in Louisville, Charleston WV and Wilmington OH have now joined NWS Nashville and NWS Memphis in issuing Frost Advisories in and near KY.
Things sure did clear quickly from west to east. Kids, can you say radiational cooling?? 😉
Now add NWS Jackson KY to the list.
We now only need NWS Paducah to join the fiesta 😛
