Good Thursday and Happy Halloween. We have a very active weather day taking shape across the region. High winds, torrential rain and the potential for strong and severe thunderstorms will be with us into tonight. This could make for some very nasty weather for a lot of folks.
Here’s a breakdown of how this may play out…
– Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be with us early today… mainly in central and western Kentucky.
– A round of strong or severe storms may develop across western Kentucky early this afternoon and then roll northeastward into the early evening.
– A separate line of showers and storms will form along and ahead of the cold front and sweep eastward into the late evening and overnight hours.
– High winds will be likely with or without thunderstorms. 40-50mph gusts will be likely and will be higher with storms.
– There is the potential for a quick tornado spin up across central and western areas.
– Torrential rainfall of 1″-2″ will be possible for many areas by Friday morning.
Here are the tracking toys of the day…
I will have updates as needed and will be doing my thing on WKYT-TV. You can also get rapid fire updates via my @kentuckyweather twitter feed or on my Chris Bailey WKYT Facebook page.
Have a safe day and take care.

It is crazy. 65-70 degrees in the middle of the night. Louisville needs a little over 2 inches of rain today to make this October a top 10 wettest month ever in the history of Louisville.
Thanks, Chris Don’t remember such a threat for quite a while like this one. Seems like more of a spring storm to me. Whatever happens, so glad we have you and the KYT team to keep us on top of things. Appreciate you every day, but on days like this one could be, you are appreciated more than you know. Thanks. Have a safe Thursday everyone.
No trick or treat for you!
Looks like a wild day of weather, thanks for the updates Chris!
Thank you for looking out for us Chris and for keeping us updated. Shoot, sounds like the rain and high winds will be here around Hazard during the night. ??? I think. 🙂 I get really scared of bad weather, and it is even more scary during the night. I’ll be here as long as I have electricity. Thank you again Chris.
It looks like Texas and Louisiana are receiving the worst of the storms. Just looking at radar we may escape with just on and off rain showers unless anything gets going to our west.
Im with you, I think the storms at gulf coast are robbing us of some of the deep gulf moisture. Still will be windy with rain and a few storms but hopefully not severe like they thought
Seems like that’s usually a given with these types of setups……Lots of wind energy but light rain because of stolen moisture.
I really appreciate you having the twitter feed on the site. I missed it when it was gone. Thanks for the updates and for warning us several days out to keep up with the weather.
Now the Storm Prediction Center is considering issuing a watch for southeast Missouri and northern Arkansas. But extreme parts of western KY and western TN could be included. Could be the start of the roughest wx for our area.
If issued, it will be either a Severe Thunderstorm Watch or a “low-end” Tornado Watch.
SPC also has a 5% Tornado Probability (up from earlier 2%) for far western KY. But strong destructive straight line winds still have the highest probability. Large hail chances rather low. As CB touched on, perhaps some flood issues here and there.
Thankfully, it appears the twister threat may be reduced a bit the further east the storms track.
Looks like just a windy and showery day in Central Ky. Hope everyone enjoys a safe Reformation Day!
Tornado Watch now in effect for areas of central and western Kentucky along the Ohio River.
Both Nashville TN and Bowling Green KY have had gusts up to 35 mph.
Of course not surprising that there are lots of toppled limbs and even trees.
Presently about a thousand customers in southeast Nashville TN are without power. Well, at least it’s mild and not single digits outside (nor triple digits). 😉
