Good Wednesday, folks. Arctic air is poised to surge into the bluegrass state this weekend and is likely to unleash an early start to winter. That is just in time for the busy Thanksgiving travel week just around the corner. Before the temp drop… we have a lot of raindrops that will be falling.
The short term weather is pretty simple. A mix of sun and clouds will be with us today with readings into the 50-55 degree range for many. Clouds will increase on Thursday as readings top out in the 50s. A couple of showers may work in before the day is over.
The rain will really increase on Friday and will become heavy at times. Rain totals of a half to an inch and a half will be possible through Friday night. Winds will be rather gusty, making for a very ugly weather day.
The arctic air arrives early Saturday morning and may produce a few flakes on the back edge of the departing rain shield. Strong northwesterly winds will continue to push arctic air in here as temps drop through the 30s during the day. Check this out…
That’s some serious cold air! A few snow flurries will be possible into Sunday with lows in the upper teens and highs from the upper 20s to low 30s. Gusty winds will make it feel even colder than what your thermometer shows.
For the past week, I’ve been talking about the pattern being favorable for a winter storm to develop across the eastern part of the country. The models have been pointing in this direction and continue to do so. They take a storm system from the southwest and roll it across the gulf states then up the east coast. The GFS is now latching on to this idea…
As is… the model brings a swath of light snow across parts of the state from Tuesday into Wednesday as another round of arctic cold pushes in behind it for Thanksgiving Day…
The new European has an even bigger storm and has more of a winter threat here…
As always… it will be about the track of the low. Wait… did I just say that about a storm before Thanksgiving? 😉
I will update things later today. Make it a good one and take care.
Thanks Chris. It Looks like we will have more cold to work with this year. I wonder why it seems so hard to get the cold and moisture together. We have to work on getting those two together lol. It does look like a better year for cold and snow lovers.
Crystal, its always been that way. 31 = cold, 33 = wet.
First miss of the season to the south and east? 🙁 We’ll see…
It’s all about the track of the low? Imagine that..
well that the track that we as snowlovers wanna see!! but long time out. but very encouraging to see these signs of winter weather showing up.
come out SW thru the pan handle up the eastside..
Hey Chris…we had our first bit of snow on the 12th of Nov…that means according to the old farmers almanac we got 11 more to go.Bring it on…!!!!
You Black Friday line campers better put your longjohns on!
A period of wet heavy snow possible early Saturday morning according to a Louisville Met, that storm Chris is showing needs to track slightly further west for us folks in Central KY! Fun to watch anyway!
What Met. in L-Ville, Todd?! The only ones I’ve seen are calling for just a small chance of flurries (if that…) maybe Sat. a.m., most aren’t?! Just saw where there’s a very small chance of poss. Frz. Rn. /snow next week around Tues/Wed. I hope this isn’t going to be another dud far as a winter goes, but my gut says it’s going to be a real doozy (which is perfectly fine by ME!)
Yeah haven’t seen any met in Louisville calling for anything but a quick possible change over to snow for Louisville very early Saturday morning temps above freezing no big deal at all. Nothing heavy or substantial just plain out cold.
Nice to have a system showing up before turkey day…Still 5-7 days out so who knows..Will the northern stream interact with the southern stream?..Will the system go out to sea or hug the coast or be more inland?…Will cold air be chasing moisture?..Will the system slow down or speed up…Then In 2 days models show nothing and then none of the above…LOL
