Good snowy Saturday everyone. Our first widespread snow producer of the winter is upon us and will dump some decent snows for many across central and eastern Kentucky.I have the blog in tracking mode with lots of goodies for you to track the progress of the wintry blast.
Before we get to the tracking toys… here is a brief breakdown of what to expect…
– Snow will be breaking out early this morning across much of the region and will quickly work east.
– Parts of south central and western Ky will see a rain/snow mix that will change to rain then end as snow. Farther north and east… it is all snow for a lot of people.
– There is a good amount of lift with this system and I expect the snow to come down at a very good clip for a few hours.
– The main snow shield will taper off from northwest to southeast from lat afternoon into the evening hours. Snow showers would then be around later tonight into Sunday morning before squalls kick in by afternoon.
How much snow am I expecting? Given the amount of lift I am seeing… I decided to raise totals a bit for many areas…
If we do get those totals to verify… that would mark a very nice little snowmaker… especially for the first one of the season.
Let’s get to the tracking toys…
Current Temps
Live Cams
Lexington
Louisville
Richmond
Northern Ky/Covington
Ashland
Pikeville
Tracking snow wouldn’t be complete without YOU! Keep me and the rest of your fellow weather lovers up to date by posting the weather from where you live. For the newbies… comments can only be left on www.kyweathercenter.com .
I will have updates as needed and will be putting out a ton of info on twitter. You can find out twitter feed in the top right corner of the blog.
Take care.
As long as that rain line doesn’t cross over into clay county, I think our area will be in good shape. I have a bad feeling about it though. Is this supposed to be a wet snow?
WOW!! thanks for the tracking tools..lol.. looks like Lou. is already getting a nice coating on grassy areas..
Well for all us folks in Pulaski Co. Looks like mostly rain for us. 🙁 Nothing new though for this area….Areas from Somerset to Bowling Green hardly ever see snow
That first band of snow that just came through Louisville looks to be headed toward us here in Lawrenceburg! I think I’ll stay up late enough to see the first flakes fly.
It just stared snowing here at my house in L-burg!!!!
Not a good sign for snow in Pulaski Co. Its started as a rain/sleet/snow mix…. sigh 🙁
Snow showers here in northeastern Marion Co. Already and nice lil’ coating
Light snow falling in southwestern Lincoln County at the moment!
here in hikes point (l.ville) at my house. I am reporting a 1/4 of inch and a temp. 33
a look at the SREF agrees with chris on the 2-4 chances. By the way euro weeklies for the next month showed no signs of a major warm-up.
Light snow in Rockcastle county
Moderate to heavy snow here in lawrenceburg.
Small flakes are falling here in Nicholasville now, 🙂
Boyle County: Light snow with a dusting.
Starting to snow here in Nicholasville.
Yes, started snowing about 1:00 I guess and the cars and mulch and grass is getting covered. Concrete is just getting mostly wet so far. Interesting to think what we may see by morning.
light snow in versailles.
Snow here in Lawrenceburg has picked up SIGNIFICANTLY over the past few min. Accumulations on grassy surfaces are coming on fast!
Mmmmhhmmm Mitch.
I wondered why it was supposed to flip in Jan Feb, given the fact that we went three months with hot and dry and nothingness, only for it to turn cold/wet for just a month, then flip back? From what I’ve noticed the cycles will usually last about three full months before changing around to the changing around to the other extreme. I guess we shall see. Crazy that we’re just barely out of Nov and we’re already getting up to 4 inches of snow and C O L D temps for the foreseeable future.
Oh Great….Its snowing everywhere…but Here in Pulaski Co. its rain and sleet..LOL.
This is unexpected… Trained spotters have reported 4-6″ of snow have fallen already in Champaign, IL
That sounds real nice!!!!!
Heavier snow in Rockcastle, got a dusting already.
teleconnections such as the -AO and -NAO are able to trump the la-nina for now which usually means mild and wet. the AO and NAO can only be forecasted 2-3 weeks out. last winter the – AO dominated thus cold and snow. this winter so far – AO.
the moisture with this system is all the system is way back to the mn. & nd. border. It appears that this system will be with us for a long period of time. There is some banding just east of sdf airport moving s.e. towards F.fort. If this continues to be the setup F.F & maybe Lex. could be the big winner tonight.
All sleet and rain in Pulaski CO. I live 9Miles NE of Somerset and its all sleet and rain….congrats to the folks getting snow…im sure this will be rain soon.
Tiny flakes falling here in Madison county.
I can relate to you, living here in lou I cannot tell you how many times the rain & snow line was only 25 miles n. of the ohio river.
WKU WRF has a high of 32* for lexington with .2 qpf.
Freezing rain here in Rockcastle
Snowing pretty good here in Midway,Ky
its all rain in Somerset….isn’t that great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah I went from a nice snow shower to a nice cold rain shower. But I should have learned by now, that anything close is always rain.
Nice snow shower now in Madison County(northern).
Impressive line barreling down on the coal fields of harlan county here in SE KY. Im in the 2-5 inch range but I am not crossing my fingers. Of course I am one of the ones who sees 2-5 inches and expects 2-5 inches on the ground at one time. Even though i know that these predictions are event totals. lol . WHERE THE HECK IS ROLO??? HE IS SNOW CRAZY AND HE HASNT EVEN CHIMED IN. AND IF YOU SEE THIS POST ROLO, WHERE ARE YOU FROM? MESSAGE TO ROLO: EVEN THOUGH THIS ISNT OLD SCHOOL, WE LOVE YOUR POSTS. CHIME IN BRO. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT OUT OF THIS SYSTEM?
Snowing H A R D in northwest Lexington
Really big flakes in masternson area… prob about .25 inches in the grass already, and a coating on the roads… i love snow
WOW! HEavy snows here in harlan county only to be followed ten minutes later with very heavy sleet and then you guessed it, as of now, cold rain. I hate winter, but LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Not snowing anymore here in SE Lex. The radar shows it is still snowing though. Have about 1.5 inches on back deck. Hope it picks back up again.
Zero in Somerset….its been rain and sleet mix…… Its always the snow shaft down here…..JKL shouldn’t have issued a WWA for Pulaski Co.
Nothing falling here in Burgin right now. Just a dusting on the back deck. Sure hope it picks up soon.
Nice coverage of snow on grassy areas here in Lawrenceburg….snow was in transition stage…snowing again as of 6:24….if snow continues, will make for a NICE Christmas parade atmosphere at noon!!!
I just opened up my front door, and everything is snow covered. (Just north of Hazard) Maybe an inch or so? I can’t really tell until daylight.
everything here at my house in knox co. is coated with freezing rain and sleet..BLAH!!!
Normal garbage for us in southern KY
Just got to work here in Versailles (live in Lex.) and it’s pouring the snow.
44 comments left during the OVERNIGHT hours…you guys are great! The snow on the grass & trees here in Woodford Co. looks GREAT!
Finally Snow in Pulaski CO.
LOL…i was just getting ready to ask you..because I seen where they were reporting light snow…maybe I’ll get some as well..
starting to see some flurries flying around, after sleet, freezing rain coating through the night last night
LOL…well….Looks like a slush puppy machine exploded in my back yard
LOL..i remember the slush puppy machine from last yr..lol…just now starting to get some light snow flurries flying around here in Barbourville.
finally some light snow here in knox county
the ground is about covered here. snowing at a pretty good clip atm
Still snowing heavy on the south side of Lexington. I have about 3/4 inch on my porch. My daughter is already asking to go out and play!
we went from flurries to quickly intensifying snow and low visibility
Snow covered the ground real quick here in Somerset…..Still snowing..but id say sleet and rain will take over soon
snowing hard here in barbourville now, ground is whitening up fast and the flakes are getting bigger!!! looks awesome to me..FINGERS CROSSED IT DONT TURN TO RAIN!!!!
not a big deal here in nky. hopefully we can get some moisture in here……
folks east of I-75 in south east ky..get ready to go from flurries to an ALL OUT SNOWSTORM !!..Here in knox co. we went from nothing to flurries to moderate snow and ground covered in less than 30 min.!!! snowing, everything is PLASTERED with snow!!! sure look nice…
Pikeville has gotten zilch o.o
Almost 2 inches in northern Madison County and still coming down. It’s so pretty outside 🙂 Got 2 pictures here (or you can click on my name and then “recently uploaded”.
http://kdwphoto.smugmug.com/New-Photos/Recently-Uploaded/11526811_VAm9m#1114015983_RVuC5
Well, got up this morning at 7:20 and the ground was white…now, it is all but gone. Rain has taken over in Pulaski County….but it sure was pretty while it was here! You guys who
do get snow, please share some pictures! Be careful out on the roads today, folks. Could be some slippery spots…(just not here…)
i would assume we have a good solid cold air column top to bottom here with current temp at 28 and very fine flakes. interesting to see how far north the 33 line can go.
2.25″ in western Franklin Co.
and comin down pretty hard
snowing very heavy, flakes the size of silver dollars falling here in knox!!!
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Shelbyville. My little ones came bounding into the bedroom this morning SQUEALING with excitement. I’m kinda like a big kid, too. I LOVE the white stuff.
8:30 am in pike county and strangely no snow, rather cold but thats about it :/
hmmmm, are we going stay all snow TIM? moderate snow in manchester right now. I say we get a switch over by 10.
if we stay snow 2-3 inches very possible with this batch. 33 degrees here. if it was below freezing this would have been very nice.
Headed to Lex
Score old man winter-1 central ky. snowdome-0. Chris, you nailed this one. Way to go!
Yep. 2″ in N Madison. This makes more sense considering the moisture. Future reference- we should not pay attention to Cincinnati weather dudes and dudettes.
They were dead wrong. Also most of our local weather mets dropped the ball too. They were talking no more than 1 to 1.5″ less than 24 hours ago.
its still snowing pretty good here in nicholasville they are callin for another 1 to 2 inches, but the way its snowing now reminds me of the winter of 1997 it started snowing like it is now outside when it was done for the night we had 22 inches. stay safe all
HEAVY WET SNOW IN MANCHESTER, got bout a inch so far.
this is the hardest snow ive seen in years. BIGGGG DABS.
It’s still snowing here in London, and there’s a pretty good layer already on the ground. Should set the mood for the London Community Orchestra’s Christmas concert later this evening.
Just started to snow here in Grayson. I think I will build a nice fire and watch it fall.
2.5″ so far in NE Louisville and still coming down at a good clip! You nailed it Chris. Local METs here said 1-2″ tops. Oops…imagine that.
hahaa weather.com has updated us to 3-6 inches. go figure. Now they jump on the snow train!!! what happen to that inch?! it came down along time ago. 🙂 CB has always been the best!
It appears as of now that lou. is not going to make it to the 3″ mark. All the main moisture is east of town. And the daylight will hold down anymore significant accumulation.
We wait to play another day.
None of the Louisville stations have ever been great about snow forecasts other than John Belski. but your right, Chris is by FAR, the best person to turn to for this and any types of weather!! 😉
Ours has been all snow in London !!!
We have over 2 inches of snow already in the Millville area and it’s still coming down very steadily. It’s beautiful!
look like the snow is eating away for the manchester area, sweet spot is lexington to east se.
eastern edge eating away down this way. we will see if it fills in. but as of now the SNOW is over in the clay county and surrounding areas.
Moderate Snow band coming through Lawrenceburg at of 9:15 a.m.. Snowing a a VERY good clip and from the looks of everything, has been just about all night long! Good call CB!
dude it sucks here too. we are probably going to get less than an inch here.
I agree! The funny thing is Belski’s replacement just an hour ago wrote on their weather blog and said the snow has been fairly light and he only expects 1/2 to 1″ of total snowfall in the region. Maybe downtown or the west end is not getting much. But still how can you go say totals of 1″ tops when ppl are reporting over that number already? So thankful for Chris Bailey and this blog.
About an inch on the ground and light snow coming down here.
2-3 inches in versailles.
Just starting to seriously snow here in Salyersville. Sticking on the grass but not on the roads yet. Let’s be careful out there!
What part of the city are you in? Im near jeff/oldham co line in NE Lou and we have a solid 2″+ here. Looks nice and white everywhere!
got about 1″ here in Barbourville, of heavy wet snow, now its switched to sleet..
Solid 3 inches here in Lansdowne in Lex. Still coming down hard.
We have at least 3 inches of snow here in lawrenceburg. I measured some 4 inch totals. It is still coming down real heavy.
It’s 9:30 AM and hasn’t started to snow yet, but i’m sure it’s around the corner. I’m located in Eastern Pike Co. (South Williamson). I have a live police scanner feed at http://livefeed.ai4uk.com if anyone is interested.
Thanks
Eddie
nothing on the ground here in southern Rowan county, a very light snow has been falling for about an hour.
Still light snow in Crestwood-about 2″ so far
A good couple of inches in Wilmore, maybe more. Coming down at a pretty good clip. It looks (by the radar motion)like the stuff to the NW in Illinois will eventually swing to the SE in our area. Hoping to get some more good accumulation!
We’ve hit the three inch mark at the Richmond Road/Man O’ War area in Lexington. The snow appears to be picking up in intensity again. Kids just came in from playing in the backyard. Great winter day CB. You nailed this forecast a week ago while local weather folks were calling for highs in the 40s and rain. They didn’t jump on board until yesterday.
Stopped snowing at this moment 33*, between .5 to .75″ on grass anslush on driveway.
I love this website
well hope u all enjoy the snow, we got almost a inch before it quit.
its melting quick. time to focus in on horse racin and ball games. see u all later.
better enjoy the next couple weeks cause it might be the best as far as winter weather. next month not looking very good.
2-3 in Georgetown and still snowing. If the temps stay under 32, Chris’s map might be too conservative-but NOBODY else predicted this event.
NW Lex, Masterson Station
Just shy of 3″… Should be over 3″ when all said and done…
Nice for early Dec.
…
Chris, you need a raise…..
heavy snow finally in covington, really intensified here!
I never post on here, but only a few times, but I do read here a lot and I must say Rolo you are always so negative in most of your post.. why is that…Kinda reminds me of a Debbie downer…Ne thankful for any snow we get here in Kentucky…
Started out as sleet in London (Sublimity area) before turning to snow. We’ve got a solid dusting – but sounds like a little bit of sleet mixing in with the snow now. Still…pretty to look at! Roads looking good so far.
3″ and 29 degrees in west Franklin Co. and still comin down pretty good.
A slight round of slush earlier in Monticello, now nothing. With the track of this coming weeks clippers & the January forecast, is it too soon for this part of the state to start dreaming about next year??
I’d say breathitt county has a good amount of snow, they have been hammered according to radar
Oh, I love CB and Snow! It puts excitement in my heart and a twinkle in my eye! Here in Berea (421) its beautiful! Haven’t been out to measure but the trees look so pretty covered in snow, and at a guess I’d say right about 2″ and still snowing.
Got about 2 inches in my part of Madison County, roads are slick, grass is almost completely covered. By looks of radar, it’s about done for a little bit, though 🙁
Will take what we can get! This is a good first snow for the season—and Chris, you came through on the forecast, as always!
Snow is coming down good in Pikeville starting to stick on cars and grass.
Sounds like sleet trying to mix in here in Richmond. Please don’t change to rain!!! Official measurement here in my backyard reads 2.5″ of snow.
Snow is coming down good in Pikeville starting to stick on cars grass.
Snowing in Pikeville.
Just woke up to see a good snow shower here in Mousie (Knott Co.). We’ve got at least an inch on the ground already. Hopefully the roads don’t get too bad into Sunday, I’m hoping to get back to Morehead State for classes on Monday.
to late 🙁
Snow is coming down here in Paintsville at a pretty good clip but it isn’t sticking to the ground very well yet. Will the temperatures stay the same for the rest of the day because if thats the case I’m afraid we won’t see much in accumulation in our area. Hope it drops a few degrees and we get some on the ground soon 🙂
1 maybe 1.5 here in London temp at 33 now it’s a light cold rain slush it sucks
Been sleeting here for the last hour and snow is turning slushy. YUK!
Norhtern Rown Co./Morehead…nice light coating on ground. seems like it’s starting to pick up a little in intensity but still really tiny flakes…gonna have to get it’s act together if we are to get the 2-4 inches forecasted! seems like the ground is too wet, making the snow melt? Don’t know the temp.
Snow in northern Jessamine! I just went outside to throw hay to the horses. I realized the snow was a lot deeper than I thought. I went back and took about 8 measurements around the yard, even on top of the car. Measurements ranged from 4″ to 6″, but I’d say that 4.5″ was a good median. And it’s still snowing!
Really? Wow, sounds like you guys are in the zone…hope it makes its way here:) althought it does just mean a lot of work for me ..still love it haha.
Plus 3 in. here in Lex.
3 plus here in Lex.
nothing worse than RAIN falling at 35* on slushy snow…but thats whats happening in my back yard…:(
I thought this part of the state was supposed to get the nice bulk of the snow?? is that gonna happen?
Im about 4 miles from Cave Run Lake, it stopped for about 10 minutes and its inally starting to pick back up a little, I see no snow on the ground at all and its starting to worry me a little bit honestly.
Yep, over 3 on UK’s campus. Nobody believed me yesterday because local mets and weather.com (lol) lowball it, but not Chris!
possible eastern UNITED STATES OLD SCHOOLER mid month.
34 with snow actually hanging on the ground, few sprinkles/light rain.
The nws released thier snowfall toatls through 11 am, and they are WAY underestimated!!!! They said we have an inch of snow on the groud here in anderson county, but we really have a bout 3 or 4 inches!!!!
I don’t understand. Everyone is posting how much snow they have and it is melting as fast as it falls in Grayson. The WSAZ radar shows a ring of green over Carter Co with blue snow falling all around. Anyone have any suggestions as to why this is so?
Just went outside to winterize my faucets. I was surprised how deep the snow is on the grass. A little over 5 inches. South Lexington, inside New Circle.
Those are not estimated reports. Those are the reports that were called into the office. If you got more, send them an e-mail and tell them what you got.
Still green and wet in Grayson. 🙁
No I am not surprise. I was watching the radar late last night and I could see the banding east of sdf. Here in hikes point we might have an inch. Also, remember the official accumulation is measure at west point.
Congrats to you. I wish the whole Lou. area could of got into more of the action.
Hey Crystal! We have close to 4 inches here. I was expecting a couple and was really surprised to see this much! Maybe the snowdome will finally come down! LOL!
I live on 32/Rowan CO/Fleming Co. Line, we definitely have a nice light coating and still very very light tiny flakes…maybe if I quit watching, it will actually snow haha. One side of all the trees are snow covered, so it’s definitely been snowing at an angle..but so far nothing like I was expecting or hoping to see ..sigh.
Just topped 4 inches here in SW Lexington, and still coming down. Bought lost a couple of my smallest doggies out playing in it and had to thaw them out with the hairdryer because of all the little snowballs sticking to their hair! Fun, fun fun!
Only a trace here in Morehead, hope it picks up before it ends..
MikeM where are you? You’re missing all the fun?
looking at the radar on here..it looks like the band is moving very fast, I don’t see how we are going to get anywhere near 2-4 inches before it moves on as predicted
heavy snow continues here in covington
I’m gonna quit watching ..trust Chris..and wait! the bigger flakes are starting to fall..there’s still hope for Morehead haha.
Nothing here in Morgan Co very light snow melting as soon as it falls…..
So sad that there’s no snow sticking on the ground here in Johnson County….will it this afternoon or will we not get the accumulation that everyone else is?
********** WANTED !! ***********
HEAT-MISER!!…RED,ROUND,AND FULL OF HOT AIR!!! THAT SCOUNDREL HAS INVADED MY YARD WITH RAIN…AND MY SLUSHY SNOW IS MELTING !!! MELTING !!!!….
A REWARD OF UNKNOWN PROPORTIONS WILL BE WAITING WHOM EVER CAN CAPTURE THIS BEAST!!!…
I would say it is now officially snowing here in Northern Rowan County, coming down at a nice clip and actually starting to see some more accumulation. yeah!
SNOW really coming down in Pikeville.
A total Winter Wonderland here in Northern Scott County!!!! Sorry Tim…would share if I could.
Sorry to hear that Tim, you can come up and visit us under the dome! lol Grass is completely covered, even the roads are covered here in Nicholasville! 🙂
Hey Patty its coming down good here hope it does not stop soon.
Thanks Jen…thats how the cookie crumbles though…or should I say gets soggy…lol
Is this COLD rain in Berea going to switch back over to snow? This bites:(
Yea Tim I would give you my snow but i don’t have none…..
right at 2 in. here in Breathitt Co the switch over to rain has started currently freezing rain backroads are covered with a slushly half inch or so. From the looks of the radar storm appears to be taking more of a easternly track as comapred to more SE earlier.
How are the roads in the Lexington/central Kentucky area? If one needs to drive to Lexington this afternoon, is it doable? Tia.
well if its snowing really good in nothern Rowan maybe its only matter of minutes for here, lol.
Snow has all but stopped at my house…
Slightly under 3.5″…
MJ: How does that match up with reported Lex. totals?
Glad everyone else is getting to enjoy the snow. 30 miles southeast of Louisville in Bardstown and the most we got was a dusting and now a cold rain.
Yea MJ
Here in norhtwest Lex, there is DEF more snow than is on that map. I haven’t measured it but guessing it looks like right at 3 inches (give or take)
Still nothing in Grayson. I give up.
Main roads are a little slushy but fine. Secondary roads are snow covered.
good to know…thanks!
…and NOW even the rain has stopped. This bites. Think we’ll ever get in on the good stuff, Jon?? LOL!
Doubt it. Lol. If its a clipper out of the north it always goes just to the east of us and if the storm comes out of the south we have to deal with mixing issues.
Can anyone tell me how the roads are in Lexington? I’m coming in for a concert later today at U.K.
As long as u are traveling on the M A I N roads you should be fine. Secondary…….sort of covered.
Don’t know. Am off duty. Make sure you are NOT measuring in the grass. You need to measure on a flat and solid surface.
2.6” on the ground here in covington and its still coming down pretty good.
Don’t know…am off duty. Make sure you are NOT measuring on the grass. You need to measure on a flat/solid surface.
yeah it’s still coming down hard right on the Fleming/Rowan line on 32,..so hopefully it’s hitting your way as well by now..probably have about an inch on the ground now..which not too long ago, more like just a dusting.
Much better since this morning. I managed to slide off the road at around 10am, but thankfully no damage!
Its snowing at a pretty good clip now, we have a light coating here in southern Rowan.
that’s missing 2 hours of steady snow plus the time between the report and when the nws posted it. don’t panic I emailed tom at NWS my report of 3.2 in for versailles.
is the snow over or is it going to fill back in later on. i noticed nws is just giving 30 percent tonight
I too had 4.5″ of snow in Nicholasville. Yay!
Just a quick update from down south, temperatures into the 40’s with light drizzle to no precip in Monticello.
o.k. what I wanna know is, who sold their home to the heat mizer down here!!
2+ inches in Southern Pike county, still snowing.
The precip has come to sort of a lull here in SW Lexington. Hopefully, looks to be a more snow on the way if the precip sinks a little bit more to the south.
It is snowing beautifully in Ashland. The grass is finally almost covered. =)
i’m very happy to be experiencing this storm, but as a look ahead, here is some of lmk’s forecast discussion, long term.
ALSO…THE PATTERN LOOKS TO
BECOME MORE ACTIVE BY THE END OF THE WEEK AND INTO THE FOLLOWING
WEEK WITH THE PACIFIC JET BECOMING MORE ACTIVE. A NORTHERN STREAM
SYSTEM WILL FIRST SKIRT BY TO OUR NORTH AROUND FRIDAY. THEN THE
PACIFIC JET WILL DRIVE ANOTHER SYSTEM UP FROM THE SOUTH INTO OUR
AREA BY EARLY THE FOLLOWING WEEK.
Notice the last sentence. That my friends, sounds to me like another opportunity!!!!!!!
It has finally stopped snowing here at my home in Lexington (Gardenside area) and when we last measured on a few flat surfaces, all were over 4.5 inches – in fact one area was without doubt 5 inches! We are in one of those areas that never seems to match up with the official totals of either rain or snow, so I am not surprised that we are different from other reporting locations across Fayette. Hope everyone stays safe and warm in this! Thanks to Chris for always being there for us!
Weather lovers, I need some advice. I am planning to purchase a “weather station” for my science class.
I want one that can take all the basic readings, record historic data (highs and lows, precip amounts, wind speeds, pressure… over a period of days or weeks. I also would like the system to be wireless and allow the data to be posted online so students can view it in other rooms or at home. Any advice?
Someone suggested a Davis Vantage product? Would it work with “Weather Bug”? Should that be an issue to consider?
I need advice. Thanks.
