Good Wednesday and happy turkey travels. Today is the busiest travel day of the year and it’s also the day we pay tribute to one of my favorite movies… Planes, Trains and Automobiles. We’ve been doing this for many years now and it’s become a blog tradition. This movie is a classic for your friendly weatherdude and I highly recommend checking it out.
The snow up until the point of this writing was a solid, solid underachiever and that does not make your friendly weatherdude happy. Still… some decent snows were noted from the Lexington metro and northeast. I’m hopeful the band of snow in the southeast will put snow on the ground before pulling out of town.
I was driving home after work last night and something happened to put it all in perspective…
A car was coming at, hit some slush and spun out, and crossed over my lane and into the ditch. Missed me by a matter of feet. Poor kid was scared to death. Perspective is a wonderful thing in life.
Ok… back to the actual weather portion of the program.
Snow showers and squalls will kick into high gear today across central and eastern Kentucky. There is a direct pipeline of moisture coming our way from the Great Lakes and that shows up well…
That’s a high ratio snow, so it won’t take a lot of moisture to squeeze out some decent snows. This type of setup usually produces hit and run coverings that can add up if you get under a few of them. Visibilities will be greatly reduced in the heavier squalls. Throw in 30mph wind gusts and traveling today will be no walk in the park.
Temps today will stay in the 20s and this will make for one of the coldest November days since the late 1970s. Wind chills will drop into the single digits at times. Ouch.
I have the blog all set to help you track today’s winter weather…

Sleeting and light snow in Harlan county. Dusting so far. Radar returns show some decent snow bands heading this way.
Sleeting and light snow in Harlan county. Dusting so far. Radar returns show some decent snow bands heading this way. Hopefully it will amount to something as morning wears on
2.5 icnes RaADAR LITE up 230 in morn, here in ANNNIVILLE KY look like another 2 good hours or so of moderate snow!! CB the man as he nailed it for SE KY!! WERE U PEEPS AT THAT CRIED ALL EVENING, UR GETTING UR SNOW AND U ACTED LIKE A BEAR AND HYBERNATED, IF IT WAS A COUPLE DEGREES COLDER IT WOULDD BEEN ALOT WORSE THOUGH.
I agree with Rolo, everyone disappeared after nagging for about four hours straight and I have a snow covered lawn. I think Chris did a great job in forecasting this. The totals may not be up to par with the final call, but as he said those were total accumulations over a three day period. Though they weren’t reached, the models were slightly correct, they predicted snow and we got it. It peppering snow and has been for the past hour. It’s just about over for us in Whitley County and I don’t expect two inches, but it may. Where did everyone go? This place is dead.
I would guess that most people went to bed quiet sometime ago.Yes a few areas got snow but a lot of areas got nothing that had thought they would.Of course there is still the possibility of some snow showers throughout the day on Wednesday but a lot of people still won’t get any snow.
True, but I guess that’s always the case with wintry weather forecasting. Hit and miss.
Not
This forecast was not nailed and Chris even said as much when he said it was an under achiever. you’re hilarious and delirious rolocoaster
It’s typical Rolo…..so schizophrenic when it comes to snow.
People that name call should be removed and blocked from this page. And as for chris nailing it, i got 3 inches like he said.
yup that means everybody did 😉
He did not and stated such. Why spin for CB when he mentions the miss himself? The forecast was reasonable, but our long trend defies reason. It just is what it is.
It’s not name calling when it’s the truth.
Heres your post from last night Rolo, Do you even remember half the things you write 10 minutes after you write them?
Rolo says:
November 26, 2013 at 9:05 pm
We’ll winter 1Bailey zero bust Have to call it as we see it. Moisture as always gone as we get teases with brief snow falling.. I know models said snow but other Forcaster was not bullish as far as totals went.. But BAiley went with the models and his gut. Afraid if we see10 inches total this winter we be lucky. But the hype machine worked as blog been seeing a lot hits and WKYT. Most watch channel during 530to630
It is called selective accuracy. Rather than take the entire forecast, focus on a an area that at least hit the minimum range.
I like Rolo’s posts. It is about the only fun to be had out of the perpetual misses and/or underachievers. We are the Low Snow Zone.
Pouring in Harlan County.
Glad you are safe Chris!!
That was a very close call on the road!
You are greatly appreciated and glad all are
Ok!!
Happy thanksgiving!!
Glad you are ok Chris! Goodness, a close call. And yes, it does put it all into perspective. No one loves snow more than I do. We actually got about an inch at my house. Hoped for more but, in this neck of the woods, when we get rain before, it usually turns out like this. Still very pretty to see.
Hope everyone has a wonderful Wednesday, and a Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks, Chris, for all you do!
What happened to the continued cold? Lower 50s by Monday. Ugh.
who is saying 50s Joey?
I’m glad 2 people had thier priorities straight this am Marco and Coffeelady
Well, the 2 rounds of snow left a whopping .50 inch of snow here in Lincoln co. As a snow lover I’m a little disappointed. Hopefully December will be better.
Thank you, Chris, for all you do to keep us safe in Kentucky’s crazy weather! So glad that you made it home safely this morning! I check the blog every day, even though I usually skip the comments section because of all the sarcastic naysayers, but I wanted you to know how much I appreciate all that you do during this time of year. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanks, Chris, for working so hard. We woke up to an almost solid ground cover in London, which isn’t 4 inches, but lovely still. Looks like lake-effect snow about to arrive for more a continuation of the event. Let’s all remember, it’s still November and some of these models may not function as well with early season snows. At least, that’s what I tell myself:) Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
I wonder when we’ll get another snow system to head our way? Right now I don’t care if its a clipper as long as we get more snow! I love it!
I was so hoping for enough to call off school in my area. 🙁
I never got on the band wagon concerning this past event especially knowing that the Canadian model was leading the Picketts charge. It is my hope that we can get some Greenland blocking this season which will allow some clipper flights down to the commonwealth.
Anyway I hope Chris and his family and all of the other people who come to read this blog a happy Thanksgiving. WE might not have any snow but at least we have our health and happiness.
Its to the point we get more from the wrap around upslope than the actual system. Snow is really coming down now..
It’s November.. You guys need to calm down. Snows this early in the season are a bonus in KY. In fact, there somewhat ‘rare’. This winter will be a cold one.
I think the reason many people and I include myself are semi- depress is because of the limited opportunities that we get in this region. If we were living in the Chicago area this would not be a major miss opportunity.
WOW!!!! The overachiever of this week is the lake effect snow in London right now. Snow is quickly adding additional accumulation. Getting close to 2 inches total right now.
Life is being at the right spot at the right time.
I agree. Wonder if we’ll get more from today’s snow than last night’s. Bring it on.
Beautiful flakes in Georgetown :>
yea I remember it look like no filling in was to happen, si I have the BALLS to say I was wrong buddy and give Chris props. so shut up.
I think the proper term is “mountain oysters” 🙂
LMAO 🙂
Whatever Rosco.
So thankful that you are ok! My family comes here for all our weather info. My 7 year old is often heard saying, “Well Chris Bailey said..” We all appreciate your dedication and hard work! We are also enjoying the snow this morning here in Bell County! Can’t remember the last time it snowed during the Thanksgiving holidays but we are loving it!! Happy Thanksgiving! Enjoy your family!!!
Happy Thanksgiving, Chris. I had to come back to reminisce about Planes, Trains and Automobiles. John Candy is missed to this day. I got to see Steve Martin perform with his band up in Dayton this past summer and they were great.
For some reason i picture Andy driving that vehicle…lol…Anyways glad no one was injured..Congrats to the one’s who got snow..
I would be more apt to wreck in the rain than the snow LoL. I would be the guy that would pull him out of the ditch.
Ready4Snow I tend to stay away from imports and I am more apt to wreck on damp pavement than ice or slush ;). I would be the person with the chain pulling him out of the ditch
Never owned a import..Chevy or Ford for me..Just bought a new set of tires for the winter..Believe i should of got rain tires..lol
Aquatreads lol if they still make them
It is a lovely snowy morning in Jessamine!
it’s such a beautiful morning in Crab Orchard right now. Lots of heavy white snow.
It sure is. We’re up to an inch of snow now. Woo Hoo!
Sorry, never posted here before, but been coming since you started the blog. Lost a good cow in an ice storm back then and swore as long as animals were in my care i would be prepared as best i could.
You never let me down. Thank You. Retired now, the risks in farming were big, and your forecasts allowed me to prepare for what might happen. It wasn’t just about bread and eggs to me. That’s my perspective.
only have abt an inch on the ground, it was melting as fast as it hit the ground last night! Sad we didn’t get the 3 – 6 inches but I will take any snow we can get!!!!!!!!!
My strawberry slush is very good in Monticello. Anyone know how things are shaping up the next couple weeks. If it means cold & snow for Christmas i’d take sunshine & 65 for a few days next week. 🙂
beautiful early snow in these parts – maybe 1″? but stuck to the trees etc.
just came back from Richmond and hit a wicked little mini blizzard on 75-then just as quick as it started up it quit.
happy thanksgiving all!
I’ll say this….To even be on here discussing who got what and who didn’t is pretty incredible in itself!! It’s not even Thanksgiving! Count your blessings! We have over an inch on the ground right now and had another pretty ground covering earlier in the month in Clay County. Maybe, just maybe, this is only the beginning of a much anticipated snowy winter!
If people want to be preached at they will go to church.
The NWS out of Louisville is in the process of issuing a a snow advisory for the next plume of moisture heading towards the Ohio Valley im not sure on what county’s the advisory will include.
Convective snow squalls/showers are redeveloping over Indy and heading south and with the aid of sun peaks its helping to intensify the snow squalls not everyone will see the squalls but the ones that do travel will become difficult for a time accumulations of up to a inch possible.
Wow, there were complete white out conditions earlier here in Lexington. Snow accumulated another quick inch and roads were covered for a few minutes! Looks like more snow showers and squalls to the north!
Yes………..it was a white out there for a bit of time.
Good job Chris. We ended up with about 2 inches on the ground from just looking. A lot of melting early or we would have had more. The water that was standing (a lot of rain early here) melted the early snow and then it all just froze to make a nice mess. Overall, I have to say a nice snow for November.
Thanks Chris I do enjoy your blog and appreciate the dedication of time and effort you put into it, the snow in Frankfort about a half inch, wish we could of had more but this is November, bring on the next, and thanks fellow bloggers for all the free entertainment 🙂
Looks like the long range 8 to 14 day maps have flipped from cold and dry look in the first couple weeks of December to a normal to above normal temp and precip look!
The coldest weather is going to shift to the west and north?
But the way these maps change day to day who knows?
Jeff Hamlin, apparently you have no blessings to count. Sorry for your luck. I’m far from preaching and love this blog better than anyone or else I wouldn’t be on here dealing with idiots like you.
Dee I forgive you for that foolish comment.
Well, in my part of Richmond: 1/4 of and inch. We went from 4 – 6 inches a couple of days ago to… I just don’t think the science of snow fall predication is ready for anytime, let alone prime time. The winter precip models don’t seemed to have changed… the same mistakes over and over, year after year… In my 9 years here I have never seen a model “under predict” snowfall. Should they not build the reality into the algorithms and become better over time?
I made the switch last year from giving predictions any weight. It is at best “guess casting”. I respect the mets for their efforts but the tools just don’t seem to be there. IBIWISI
I am still trying to figure out why Frankfort is under a winter weather advisory, not one flake has fallen and the sun has been out a lot ??
We never get the snow squalls from the lakes here they stay east of I-75 always!
Their discussion on why they’re leaving it. http://tinyurl.com/bx2c2h
Ended up with 2.5 – 3 inches across London. Had enough for a great snowball fight with the kids, made snow angels, and pulled out the sled. Not bad for November. Really enjoyed the intense squalls today. Happy Thanksgiving!
Nice one… 1/4 inch in Richmond…
I’ve never seen single digit temps in November. I believe the last time it happened was 1976. Temp is currently 16 in Lawrenceburg. I think we might make a run at single digits by morning.
You know what folks forget about how much snow we all got I’m just glad Chris is ok….
I don’t think anyone here cares more about snow totals than about Chris.
